Set example for city in IBM procedures Answering telephones and Hling attendance re- cords occupied valuable time, but they were not the only responsibilities of an efhcient office staff. With the city-wide conversion to IBM processing, meth- ods developed by the staff for procedures of enroll- ment and attendance were adapted for use in all city schools. Participation in an exchange of two office practice students with West High School initiated a new program of cooperation between the schools. Although there were no personnel additions in the office, a modern Apeco copying machine greatly simplified duplicating techniques for books and papers. operator. Increased reading skills, pioneered Braille program Teachers new to the language arts department were Mrs. Helen Harmon, Miss Marcia Willough- by, and Mrs. Virginia Moss. Two ofthese were replacements, the third, an addition to the staff. Mrs. Doris Smith, teacher of the Braille Resource Program, provided a class in which students learned to read and write braille. South, the only Wichita high school to have this program, has a library of over 350 braille books. Mrs. Robert Crow experi- mented with a developmental reading program us- ing a new reading machine and other materials to upgrade the reading rate, comprehension, and vo- cabulary of the students in the program. More in- terest in drama and debate was seen by greater en- rollment in those classes.
