Voters of Wichita approved a 315 million bond issue which will provide for needed buildings. Each of South High's eight years has presented a special challenge to its principal, Dr. Ralph Pyles. Last fall for the first time, Dr. Pyles spoke to the student body in an assembly concerning school spir- it. A school principal is naturally involved in civic affairs, but Dr. Pyles also lent his ability to such organizations as the Boy Scouts ofAmerica and Grace Methodist Church. Serving on the executive board of Quivira Council and acting as advance- ment chairman for District 8 were only two of Dr. Pyles' responsibilities to the Scout program. When not occupied with Scouts or school, our principal acted as a member ofthe official board at Grace Methodist Church. In his more leisurely summer- time hours, Dr. Pyles and his family traveled to Alaska, where he combined a personal visit with a tour of the Alaskan school system. -?L,, A 2 li l ,, g , X A , 1 'Hu BoardofEa'ucati0n-Sealed: Mrs. Ruby Tate, Harry O. In addition to liason work with the IBM offices, Mr. Stiles compiled master as well as student sched- ules and assisted with disciplinary problems. Work- ing with Mr. Stiles on student discipline was Henry Claassen, also assistant principal. Reprimanding pupils was not his only concern, however, for Mr. Claassen also worked closely with the Student Gov- ernment and its officers. When not involved in school activities, both men enjoyed being outdoors. Besides camping, Mr. Stiles was an avid photogra- pher and Fisherman. Mr. Claassen actively partici- pated in the American Association for the United Nations and in Phi Delta Kappa. Stil Mr. Sides and Mr. Claassen helped spread the yuletide spirit as they hung the Hem-y C1335 M 5 A traditional mistletoe in the office. 18
