debate Forensic squad wins Tournament trophies South’s debate squad had an active and successful season. Taking first place in both the Cof-feyville and West debate tournaments and third place in the Liberal and Pratt tournaments, the debaters added four trophies to the Colonel collection. The debate team competed in tournaments at Great Bend, Abilene, Newton, and in the district meet at Winfield. Novice debaters Larry Shoaf, Rosie Juarez, Kathy Weir, and Ron Kilgore displayed outstanding promise. Experienced debaters Mike Woollems and Anita Wareing also performed exceptionally well. This year’s debate topic, dealing with the control of nuclear weapons, was presented in an assembly prior to the district tournament. NFL Chapter President Mike Woollems and Sponsor Mr. Dennis Wright successfully spear-headed the annual state-wide “Cottin’ Pickin’ Forensic Tournament” held in February at South. Under the competent direction of Carol Dixon, election commissioner, a week of spinning confusion, tension and pleas for support climaxed with the announcement of those who had emerged victorious from the polls and would serve as class or Student Government officers for the coining year. With Mr. Lindley Cox serving as adviser, projects gave Colonels a big opportunity to practice the principles of domocracy and to learn valuable lessons in parliamentary procedure.
