homecoming Royalty, rooters cheer Colonels to victory Margie Geist was crowned 1964 Homecoming Queen at half-time during the South versus Wellington game. Originality and school spirit were evidenced as students and alums witnessed South High’s sixth annual Homecoming ceremonies at Roosevelt Field on October 9. A student-filled jalopy led the parade of homecoming candidates, and old time cheerleading yells carried out the “Roaring u20’s and ’30’s” theme. The Colonel hand saluted Queen Margie after her traditional coronation by playing “I’ll See You in My Dreams and “You Were Meant for Me.” Half-time ceremonies were concluded with the “Alma Mater.” The Fighting Colonels behind the running of Steve Cochran and Tom Morton trampled Wellington 33-12 in the annual Homecoming game. South’s Rebels scored early in the first quarter by taking good advantage of a Wellington fumble deep in Crusader territory. Two more touchdowns were scored to bring the total to a favorable 19-0 as half-time began. Both teams added two tallies to their scores in the second half. Steve Cochran scored the last touchdown for South with a spectacular 80-yard run which left fans hoarse from cheering. Students celebrated the Homecoming victory with a dance the following evening, October 10. “Sugar Foot Rag was the theme of the dance, and Tom Holliday was crowned Homecoming King. Senior attendants were Nancy Ellis, escorted by Tom Morton; and Kathy Bush, escorted by Kenny Scott. Junior attendants were Sharon Moran, escorted by Mike Stewart; and Gerri Hungate, escorted by Mike Eaton. Music was supplied by the “Barons.” Queen Margie Geist bestows a regal kiss on King Tom Holliday at the annual Homecoming Dance.
