Speech Team Popular The Speech Team is new this year at South High, and many students from all three schools, (Marshall-University, Central, and South) joined together to compete in the many categories of speech. For instance, there’s the Original Oratory, Humor, Play Reading, Poetry, and Extemporaneous Speaking, among many others. Students participating in speech really gained a lot; it helped to improve their English skills, as well as improving their self confidence. It also gave the members of the speech team a chance to get to know each other better and also meet other students all over the state. “The Speech team is not large in quantity this year, but the quality is tremendous”, said one team member. Ski Club Successful This year at South we had a very active downhill ski club. This was the first year that the club was organized and was popular. The advisor was Mr. Steve Lindquist. He was appointed to advise the club because of his interest in skiing. The first planning meeting was held in October of ’82. Many members helped in the running of the club; like selling tickets, publicity and organizing. The club went skiing two times a month. They went after school till 9:30 in the evening. An average of thirty students participated each trip. There was a special group rate so the price was kept affordable. The enthusiasm was strong and everyone had a great time skiing. This year we had plenty of snow. Mr. Lindquist is planning to continue the club next year, “It was hard getting everything organized but I had a lot of fun and the students were great”. All Agree - Forensic League Something To Debate About This year South High officially became a chapter office of the National Forensics League. Debate is a big part of forensics. South High was made a chapter office because the forensics program was strong. This strength was largely due to the debate team. The team began the season with 55 varsity, junior varsity and novice debaters. The team had more novices than just about any other team in the state. Two-person varsity teams were sent to the sectionals tournament at Blake and one of the teams needed only 2 more points to qualify for the state tournament. The team on the whole won two sweepstakes tournaments. The team’s success was the result of long hours of research. Evidence to be used in a round was recorded on 3 x 5 inch index cards and was stored in big carrying cases. All in all it was a milestone year for South High debate.
