True American Native Club Completes 16th Year At South The True American Native Students, or better known as T.A.N.S., is a support group for the large number of Native Americans who attend South High. The program just completed its sixteenth year and is strong as ever. One factor is the increase in the number of students in the program. According to Greg Beaulieu, a T.A.N.S. advisor, there has been an estimated two-fold increase in the number of students involved in T.A.N.S. One reason fr this is beacuse of the merger between South and other high schools. This year there were 50 to 60 students involved in the program. One unique feature about T.A.N.S. is the way their meetings are conducted. According to indian ways, group decisions must be reached by consensus. At the meetings, students discuss activities such as fund raisers, Indian student Council elections, and a feast. T.A.N.S.’ main emphasis, however, is to help Native American students become aware of their heritage and at the same time concentrate on academic pursuits. |. Ski Club Successful This year at South we had a very active downhill ski club. This was the first year that the club was organized and was popular. The advisor was Mr. Steve Lindquist. He was appointed to advise the club because of his interest in skiing. The first planning meeting was held in October of ’82. Many members helped in the running of the club; like selling tickets, publicity and organizing. The club went skiing two times a month. They went after school till 9:30 in the evening. An average of thirty students participated each trip. There was a special group rate so the price was kept affordable. The enthusiasm was strong and everyone had a great time skiing. This year we had plenty of snow. Mr. Lindquist is planning to continue the club next year, “It was hard getting everything organized but I had a lot of fun and the students were great”.
