There was a talent show for the first time during the Coronation program. The talent was chosen from the many who tried out. Thursday, unique and original hats were worn. The biggest day of the week was Friday. It started out with the judging of the door decorating contest. Then as the spirit was building up, judges were making decisions on the best float and car. The gym was filled to capacity with rowsing, cheering fans at the pep fest. The parade was very successful with many car and float entries. The game was held under overcast skys, and our spirits were dampened not only by the weather, but by the 28-7 loss to Edison. In the classic “Of Mice And Men,” John Steinbeck writes of the desperate longing of men for some kind of home-roots that they can believe in, land that they can care for- and the painful search for self. This timeless play speaks of the love that men can feel for each other; one inarticulate, dumb, sometimes violent in his need; the other clever, hopeful, and tied to a responsibility he thinks he doesn’t want. South High’s Theater production of the play was held on November 17, 18, and 19, 1982, with following cast: VAGABONDS .... Patricia Sampson, Cathy C'herne, Julie Collins, Sharon Drew, Deb Erickson, Kristin Johnson, Linda Matton, Michelle Thompson, and Emily Youngdahl. Fall Play — 19 The 1982 Sadie Hawkins Comes ‘Home99 This years dance was held on November 12, from 6:30 to 10:30 in the commons. Although it was the first time that Sadie was held here at South, that didn’t stop the 80 couples from having a great time. Throughout the evening the sheriffs were kept busy rounding up the guys that had strayed from their dates. Then the gals had to bail them out of jail with either a kiss or a nickle. There didn’t seem to be a large amount of nickles changing hands, but all jailbirds obtained their release. Much fun was had by all couples trying out the square dance steps, getting hitched by Marrin Sam, and having their pictures taken for posterity. 20 — Sadie Hawkins 1. The program just completed its sixteenth year and is strong as ever. One factor is the increase in the number of students in the program. According to Greg Beaulieu, a T.A.N.S. advisor, there has been an estimated two-fold increase in the number of students involved in T.A.N.S. One reason fr this is beacuse of the merger between South and other high schools. This year there were 50 to 60 students involved in the program. One unique feature about T.A.N.S. is the way their meetings are conducted. According to indian ways, group decisions must be reached by consensus. At the meetings, students discuss activities such as fund raisers, Indian student Council elections, and a feast. T.A.N.S.’ main emphasis, however, is to help Native American students become aware of their heritage and at the same time concentrate on academic pursuits. |. This was the first year that the club was organized and was popular. The advisor was Mr. Steve Lindquist. He was appointed to advise the club because of his interest in skiing. The first planning meeting was held in October of ’82. Many members helped in the running of the club; like selling tickets, publicity and organizing. The club went skiing two times a month. They went after school till 9:30 in the evening. An average of thirty students participated each trip. There was a special group rate so the price was kept affordable. The enthusiasm was strong and everyone had a great time skiing. This year we had plenty of snow. Mr. Lindquist is planning to continue the club next year, “It was hard getting everything organized but I had a lot of fun and the students were great”. See you next year on the slopes! 1. For instance, there’s the Original Oratory, Humor, Play Reading, Poetry, and Extemporaneous Speaking, among many others. Students participating in speech really gained a lot; it helped to improve their English skills, as well as improving their self confidence. It also gave the members of the speech team a chance to get to know each other better and also meet other students all over the state. “The Speech team is not large in quantity this year, but the quality is tremendous”, said one team member. Indeed it was a good year, which can be shown by the many trophies they brought home to the South trophy case. THE 1983 SPEECH TEAM: SEATED: Kyle Cle en, Elliott Graham. Debate is a big part of forensics. South High was made a chapter office because the forensics program was strong. This strength was largely due to the debate team. The team began the season with 55 varsity, junior varsity and novice debaters. The team had more novices than just about any other team in the state. Two-person varsity teams were sent to the sectionals tournament at Blake and one of the teams needed only 2 more points to qualify for the state tournament. The team on the whole won two sweepstakes tournaments. The team’s success was the result of long hours of research. Evidence to be used in a round was recorded on 3 x 5 inch index cards and was stored in big carrying cases. All in all it was a milestone year for South High debate. One of the newest teams became one of the best. Tlin I9S2-I98J DEBATE TEA M: KNEELING: Chris Peterson. Kat llawbakcr. Da id Tockman. SECOND ROW: Jason Tidwell, Carol) n Keefe. Rafi Caret . Debate Team — 29 Paper Staff Changes The Southerner staff made a big change this year by changing the format of the paper. They changed it from a magazine style to a Tabloid style, which was almost a full size newspaper. Most of the staff came from first trimester’s news writing class where the purpose and organization of the paper was decided. Two important policies of the paper were features and good use of photography. For three weeks prior to publication, the staff worked hard on reporting, writing, editing, headlining, assigning and taking photos. Editor Stuart Littlejohn summed it up by saying, “During those three weeks you hate the newspaper and dread going to class. Everything revolves around the paper as it monopolizes your time. You always want to quit but for some unknown reason you stay on.” The day of the paper deadline, the staff looks back and feels a sense of great accomplishment. 1. Co-editors David Tockman and Stuart Littlejohn. Advisor, Mr. Schell and managing editor, Terri Aleckson. 2. Chief Photographer Mike Patterson. 30 — Southerner Staff litr This year the Tiger Staff at South was one of the largest ever. The staff consisted of 2 photographers, Linda Carroll and Greg Thompson, 17 staff members and 3 co-editors; Karla Anderson, Lynn llinrichs, and Stephen Savage. The staff had a hard time choosing a theme because of all the different ideas from the different schools. After long periods of discussion, they decided on a recipe theme. In the theme they tried to express the idea of different schools combined into “South.” The staff put a lot of time, work, and dedication into the yearbook and they were well satisfied with the outcome. The transition from one country and society to another would be challenging hut exciting. These students stay in Minneapolis for the entire school year. They live with a host family whose son or daughter attends South. Occasionally the host student will choose to go and stay with the exchange student and his family and attend school in the foreign country that they are from. The students usually become very close to their host families and create longlasting friendships which often endure for many years to come. 1. Anders Forsman keeps busy on the typewriter. 2. International Club New To South This year South’s foreign language classes have combined their clubs into one. The product of this being the International Club. This year the clubs are combined because many students, as well as faculty, being new to the school, they figured it would be a good way to meet others. This is also a way for students to learn about the other languages from each other. This idea is a drawing together of everyone instead of the usual competition between clubs. There are about 40 people in the club. Each has paid S2.00 dues to start the club off w ith some funds. They have meetings scheduled every month. The club tried to organize one event each month. Some of these events throughout the year were: AFS presentation at the first meeting, of a student who talked about her own experience as a foreign exchange student, a bowling and pizza party, and they hosted 6 AFS students, took them to a basketball game at South, and out for pizza afterward. 1. The Student Government took a while to get started, but when they did, they put a lot of time and effort into helping the “New South” get rolling. With the merging of Marshall-University, Central and South, came many problems which had to be dealt with, and the Student Government put their whole effort forth. This year the Student Government worked closely with the Administration trying to solve problems such as smoking in the bathrooms, conflicts with the school song, and many homeroom grievances. Mr. Cady hopes next years Student Government will be even bigger than this years and as people get adjusted more to South we hope they will be interested in the events and issues concerning South High. Although South has a long way to go, this year’s Student Government did a great job, and deserves a pat on the back for a hard job well done. Marshall University students were inducted into the Honor Society in November; early in the 82-83 school year. Throughout this year the Society has met to discuss such things as service projects for the community. One of which was giving money to a food shelf program. Money was raised through the sales of Candy Grams in December. Advisors this year included: Warren Kaari, Carol Horswell, Helen Klanderud, and Jim Seeden. 1. They plunged right in to a busy performance schedule that included a singing tour to Duluth. The group performed a variety of music from classical to rock, including a choreographed medley of songs from “Fame” and “A Chorus Line.” The new 50-voice Concert Choir, under the direction of Jim Ledbetter, combined the excellent choral traditions of the old Central, South, and Marshall-University Chorus. The choir had an amazingly productive first year, with several performances in school, in the community, at the Region 3 Music Contest and a 5 performance tour to Chicago. South now has two hand directors. They are Mr. Malmberg who came from Central, and Mr. Kantar who was at South last year. There are about 110 students in the various band classes this year. The bands include the Symphony Band and Wind Ensemble played at many football and basketball games and the basketball region meets. They also led the Homecoming parade with their Tine music. South also hosted the all city Junior High and Senior High Band Festivals. The Wind Ensemble participated in the region three band contest and competed in a National contest in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they received a rating of “Excellent”. Bands — 41 Central Magnet Conies To South The Central Magnet Program, an academic liberal arts program designed to meet the special needs of gifted, talented, and high potential students, is new this year at South. Started in 1970 at Minneapolis Central High School, it was moved to South when Central was closed last year. The Magnet Program offers students many opportunities such as: skipping ninth grade class requirements, taking seven classes a trimester, taking advanced placement classes, and graduating in less than four years. All students enrolled in the Magnet Program are expected to maintain a grade point average of 2.5 for their first trimester, and 2.7 or above for all other trimesters. The Magnet Program has approximately 416 students this year, more than ever before. Although there are only three staff members compared to the large number of magnet students, each student is personally known by all the staff. Magnets have an avid curiosity and are heavily involved in all facets of school life at South. 1. Jennifer Reinhart, Raficl Gcretz, and Larry McDonald listen to a lecture. 2. As a result of the school closings, the Open schools from .Vlarshall-U and Southwest underwent a merger, combining the best of both programs. The Open school attracted many new students that were unfamiliar with it’s procedures and curriculum. These students soon learned that the Open program offered many opportunities for the motivated student. The atmosphere was casual and the teachers and students communicated on a personal level which encouraged independence by giving the students responsibility for their education. The environment was a breeding ground for creativity because students could pursue any constructive Held of study that interested them. All participants had access to Advanced Placement classes, independent projects, community internships, student led interest groups, and a variety of informative speakers. The unique flexibility of Open School enabled students to be enthusiastic about learning. 1. Ms. Thayer's Biology class observes as she conducts a lab experiment on a fetal colt. 2. Open School — 43 Linkage Program Gives Students A Good Start This year the Linkage Program is in it's 3rd year of operation. This is a dropout prevention program for 9th and 10th graders. At the end of each school year, the staff would go over to the junior high schools and recruit students. They look for students who need special help and attention. They also try to get to know them over the summer. This process helps the students to come to South the following year. This program gives the students support and a sense of association. The staff reaches out to students who need them. They help them not only with school problems but with personal problems as well. This program helps the students to get on the right track toward graduation and a diploma. 1982-1983 LINKAGE STAFF: Gordon Anderson (Teacher). Chris Solarin (Outreach). Partnership Program Keeps Students In School The Partnership Program is a drop out prevention program for 11th and 12th graders. It is also for students who’ve dropped out of school and have come back to finish and get their diploma. Here, the students come to receive help when they feel they are losing credits and interest in school. Students can go to the staff for help with their personal problems too. Some of the things that are stressed in the partnership Program are: Teaching and Learning, Social Service Outreach, Family Conference, Self Confidence, Individual and Family Counseling, Academic Achievement, Self Investment Improvement, Self-Motivation, Graduation, and many more. Because of the Partnership Program, many students gain a renewed interest in school, and see it through until graduation. The program fills a vital need for many South students who need the personal help that the program offers. PARTNERSHIP MEMBERS: BOTTOM ROW: John Sandro, Grog Hill. Kingslov Palacio. But that’s not the only place where there is activity. Behind the scenes the stage crew is hard at work. The stage crew this year consisted of eight students who ran the sound and lights for various functions taking place in the auditorium. Under the direction of Mr. George Schell, they did everything from spotlighting a speaker to putting up and taking down elaborate sets. Since the beginning of the year they’ve been kept busy. In November they worked with Mr. Jack Litowsky on the South High Fall play “Of Mice And Men”. They also worked on the homecoming and Snow Days Talent shows. They even helped the Guthrie Theater disassemble their set after their production of “Talley’s Folley”. The stage crew through their hard work and dedication have made the functions taking place in the auditorium go smoothly. For this effort they deserve recognition. DECA stands for Distributive Education Club of America. Most people think of DECA only as the school store, but it is much more than that. The importance of DECA is in the classroom and job experience it provides. In the classroom students learn all about job markets, economics, advertising and a whole lot more. As a senior you are elligible for the work program. The coordinator is Charles Swanstrom. If a student is interested in the program he she comes in and meets with Mr. Swanstrom. They talk about the kind of job the student is interested in and what he has available. When a opening comes up for a job he informs the student and the rest is up to the student to get the job. This work experience gives students credit toward graduating. Along with the classes and the work program there is the school store. It is located in room 140 and is open every morning from 7:15 to 7:45. Students get experience at sales and managing which helps them in the future. THE 1982-8.1 DECA Club: BOTTOM ROW: Jim Hreha. The program also focuses on developing students’ vocational abilities, which is part of readying a student for the employment world. The program is a part of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, an agency which specializes in getting handicapped persons into the job market. Helping a handicapped student discover his her employment potential has its limitations. Jobs that require a lot of mobility are not suited for orthopedicallv handicapped persons. This is why MARS looks with promise to industries like the computer industry. MARS students also helped organize the library card catalogue here at South, a job that well meets their physical limitations. For many of MARS’s 22 members, the program is the key to the future. 1. Tryouts were held the previous Spring. Later in the Fall, the try-outs for Hockey, Basketball and Wrestling cheerleading were held. They had practices after school every day of the week. The new cheerleading advisor was Arlene Strand. She really helped the squads get things together, by getting fund raisers available etc. The cheerleaders were selling different sorts of candy, poms, and also candles, to help pay for their uniforms. Practices range from the crack of dawn to late evening. This year the Tigerettes strive for perfection finally paid off as they swept first in the Minnesota State Danceline Competition. Although the Tigerettes are a danceline, there is a lot more involved in being a Tigerette; they are a supportive group, listening to each others problems and giving each other support and confidence. They work hard at entertaining the student body as well as promoting school spirit. “Advisor Loyal Brezny is the main reason the team is so prestigious”, says Senior LeeAnn Gossman. They were only separated into men’s and women’s teams for scoring purposes. Their impressive record and achievements reflected the advantages of practicing and attending meets together. Co-coaches, Mr. Kaari and Mr. Canham, contacted prospective runners from all of the schools and prepared for practice which began in mid-August. Interest spread by word of mouth and eventually fifty people were out for Cross Country. These people had a wide range of running ability, some had previous experience and others found it a challenge to run a few blocks. During their two hour practices after school, the Cross Country team would run an average of five to eight miles, including hills and sprints. They ran at a variety of places, such as: around the lakes, along various golf courses, on the River Road paths, and through the neighborhood blocks. By the end of the season this routine built up long distance endurance. For the people with extra motivation there was a rooster club that met at 6:am during the week to run. The Cross Country team only lost two graduating seniors and showed much promise for future seasons. The Women’s Cross Country team was the Conference Dual meet champion and they also finished second in the City meet. This team won the very first trophy for the new South High. The All-City team included Captain l auric Harris, Joy Farmer, Theresa Klein, and Monica Capra. According to the Minnesota State Cross Country Association of Coaches, Joy Farmer was recognized as an All-State runner, finishing 22nd out of the 140 women who competed in the 1982-1983 season. This years Varsity Football Team consisted of forty-seven players. The team got an early start by practicing two weeks before school began, (7:30-12:30 Monday-Thursday) with Coaches Webert,C'arter, ind Arnold. This years team captains were Dave Gundel, Rodney Lossow, Mike Pearl, and Tim Smith. The season started out slow, but as the team mates got to know each other, the season moved along. The highlight was the winning of the last three games. The final one against Centennial was especially suspenseful when Leon Mungar scored the winning touchdown in the last three seconds of the game. Rodney Lossow, one of the teams captains, commented, “All in all this year was tough. New players, new coaches, and a new style of football to learn. At times we didn't play our best and at times we didn’t get the right breaks. It’s only a game played to have fun, and I'm sure that the whole team did have fun.” The J.V. team this year had thirty-four players. They were coached by Gordy Halloran, and Dick Gromesh. The record for their season was 1-4, and the coach hopes to see the guys back next year. THE 1982 JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Brian Tonsager, Dean Adams, Chris Smich. Jeff Williams. However, they ended 3rd overall in the city with a 4-2 record. Mr. Beske, the team’s coach, was overall quite satisfied with the performance of his players. Beske stated, “These people began practice before school started, and even though they came from 3 different high schools, and did not know each other, they formed a supportive team and worked well together.” Several non-conference meets were played prior to and during the season for endurance and confidence in team play. There were 22 girls out for the team, and 10 played in varsity positions. Nancy Blake worked with the J.V. players. Barb Smith took 2nd in the city J.V. tournament, and this was her 1st year out for the team. Another great accomplishment was achieved by Cindy Wood and Karla Anderson. They played doubles together only once before entering regions. They defeated all 5 teams and clinched the 5AA Region title. In State, they lost in the 1st round to Virginia, but were thrilled just to reach that goal. 1. Julie Eteslage hits the ball with her graceful backhand shot. 2. The team Has made up of veteran players from Marshall-U’s club team and new players from both Central and South. The team finished the season with 6-5-1 record, but their record belied the wealth of talent of the team. Coach Tungseth attributed the losses to powerful forwards from opponents like Washburn and Southwest, and also to some bad luck. Junior Ethan Conroy said, “We had a good season and I had alot of fun, but it seemed like we choked in the big games.” In sectional play against Roosevelt, the South team outplayed the Teddies, but were unable to score. They lost 1-0 in sudden-death overtime. Coach Tungseth explained, “We learned that we could dominate a game and still not win it.” Surprisingly, they maintained a winning attitude. This was partly due to the coaching abilities of Ron Tungseth, a student at Augsburg College, who liked to vary drills to keep practices interesting. The future looks bright for the men’s team; only four players are graduating this year. While halfback John Degan, an extremely versatile player, will be difficult to replace, the South J.V. team will supply the team with new talent. All-Conference awards were presented to juniors Chip Starr and Souk Chan-tatouk; and senior John Degan and junior Sid Vixay-vong received Honorable Mention. The team was comprised of many first year soccer players, although a few had played on the club teams at Marshall-U and Central. “There are three objectives to soccer,” said coach Steve Hard, “To have fun, learn soccer, and to win! The year was an awkward one, with many beginning players, an unfamiliar coach, and a new school. “It was a fun season and we all got along well,” said senior Renee Thompson. Through hard practices and determination, the women’s soccer team ended with a record of 10-2. South beat every Minneapolis conference team except Washburn which went on to become state runner up. Next years team has alot of promise with cocaptain and All-Conference player Marg Jaede returning along with a fine group of dedicated soccer players. Coach Steve Hard hopes to see more people come out for soccer next year. He felt size limited them this year. All-Conference players were co-captain Marg Jaede, senior Renee Thompson, and junior Paula White. If you’re wondering, that’s swimming lingo, and the 1982-’83 Men’s Swimming team was great at all four strokes. Their 6-4 dual meet record concluded a successful season. The team also made an impressive showing at the Duluth Invitational meet where they took second place and won several individual medals. The team was made up of sixteen swimmers, nine of which were seniors. Captains Charlie Baker, Jim Corbesia, Jon Nitschke, and Tim Peter, started a new tradition of wearing ties on meet days in hope of recruiting a few spectators. The swimmers were all very talented and some were prospective state competitors. Incorporated into the team were two divers, Mike Patterson and Mike Reynolds. The highlight of the season was South’s victory over Washburn. This was the first time in history that South had beaten Washburn. Part of the credit was due to coaches Mike Anderson and Neil Anderson who pushed the swimmers to their peak of condition. The season brought the swim team their share of victory. 1. The bringing together of athletes from Central, Marshall-University, and South this year, has produced the toughest women’s swimming team in South’s history. The Tigers compiled a 4 win and 6 loss dual meet record, and they won their first major competition: a first place finish over seven other teams at the Trojan Invitational held in Superior Wisconsin. Eight school records, out of eleven, were set this yean 200 yard Medley Race, 200 yard Individual Medly, 100 yard Butterfly, 100 yard Backstroke, 100 yard Breast stroke, 500 yard Freestyle, 400 yard Freestyle Relay and the 200 yard Freestyle. The prospect for the future is excellent because of the large number of 9th and 10th graders who will be returning next year. The coach this year was Mike Anderson, who has coached women’s swimming at South for about seven years. The assistant coach was Neil Anderson, a former South High graduate who also has coached swimming for several years now. Co-Captains this year were Diane Janey and Peggy MacEachern. Instead, the team was second in the Region (to North) and in the Cith (to S.W.), compiling an amazing 17-4 record. The team lost the City title due to the ineligibility of a player that resulted in the forfeiture of two games. The starting five included many outstanding individuals such as tri-captain Russell Smith, who was the conference leading scorer and All-State, and tri-captain Curtis Travis, an All-State alternate. Tri-captain Brandon Grissam was described by Coach Levain Carter as “our most consistent player.’’ The teamwork of all the players was impressive. “This team really jelled and came out winners-remarkable!’’ said Carter. With six juniors on this year’s Varsity, we can expect future successes from the team. THE 1982-1983 MEN'S VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM: TOP ROW: Tony Johnson. Larry Thomas. Brandon Grissam. For the 1982-83 school year South was not expected to show any signs of competitive team play, which was true during the first part of the season. But down the stretch, the players became more comfortable and confident of each others abilities. Because of the individual skills of many of the returning varsity members, they are expected in the future to be a highly competitive ball club. Junior Jaqueline Dekkcr said, “The height of our team will be instrumental in next year’s success. With Nina Ackcrberg, Marg Jaede, Tonya Freeman, and I playing post, we will have a good reserve of capable big players.” Till I‘182-83 WOMEN'S JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Elba Rucker. Luck was not on South’s side as 7 games were lost by only one goal. The highlight of the season came as the “South pucksters” beat Edison in back-to-back 3-2 games. Defenseman Shawn Sabol and Goalie Ricky Wilcox were named to the All-City Team. Honorable mention players were Defenseman, Jon Westby and Center, Bill Feriancek. Throughout the season, the line of John Schardin, Scott Kyllo and Rick Aim proved to be the best scoring threat. Most of the team will be back next year with only Captains Bill Feriancek, Mike Connelly and Chris Fin-stad lost to graduation. Coach Aim also looks for much help from the current crop of JV players who had an 8-10 season this year. These players will be of great help to the South Hockey Team in the years ahead. Both the men’s and women’s ski teams, coached by Richard Axelson (“Ax”), began training in November and staged a runathon to raise money for a trip to ski camp. Two men and six women went to camp, Skisabella, located in Northern Minnesota. They spent one week skiing, up to 5 hours a day, and were coached by U.S. National Team and Oly mpic skiers. The men's record was 3-3, the losses due to the illness of two varsity skiers. But by the Region Meet, Matt Brown and Josh Bunker were healthy enough to join Jason Tidwell and Eric Belton and capture the second place region trophy. Sophomore Josh Bunker finished 4th overall and was the first South skier to qualify for the State Meet in six years. At State he placed 38 out of about 55 skiers. Both Bunker and Brown, a freshman, received the All-Conference award. In addition to the four region scorers, newcomers Sean Mulcahy and Manfred Kegg showed great potential. Coach Axelson believes that both the men’s and women's teams can go to State next year. “This year our goal was to be 2, but next year it will be 1 in the Region!” 5 THE 1982-1983 CROSSCOUNTRY SKI TEAM (At the beginning of the season): BOTTOM ROW: Greta Hanson. Men’s Skiing — 85 Women’s Skiing: Quality Quantity = Winning Season This year saw a dramatic increase in participation on the Women’s Cross-Country Ski Team. With only one experienced skier from South and three from Marshall-U, Coach Axelson was shocked when 27 girls came out for the team. The team finished the season second place in the conference, with a 5-1 record, defeated only by traditional skiing powerhouse, Washburn. The second place trophy at the Region Meet eluded the women because of injuries to scorers Anne Sawyer and Sarah Kreft. The South “A” relay team (Jill Stever, Joy Farmer, Matt Brown and Josh Bunker) surprised everyone with their silver medal finish in the Region Mixed Relay Meet. Junior Joy Farmer received All-Conference honors. But all their hard work didn’t keep the skiers from having fun. Locker room raids, wild and crazy practices and frequent “after practice parties’’ kept up team morale. Cross-country skiers are typically close as family and this year’s team was no exception. W'ith only two skiers graduating this year, Captain Jill Stever and Heather Kurtz, the women’s team is aiming for the State Meet. With the merger of the different schools there were many members from other schools who were on the team. For the wrestling team, this wasn’t a problem. The team blended together great, they got along well and did other things outside of practices. The head coach was Mr. Skavnak and the assistant coach was Mr. Jurisch. The team had a valuable asset in John Newman, who was a special coach that helped out during practices and meets. The two captains were Bob Schneider and Rich Moore. During regions the team competed as a team and individually. On the day of the match the team was weighed and put into weight classes. Diet was important to the wrestlers so that they could stay in their weight class. Since there were many younger wrestlers this year, the team is sure to be strong next year. Coach Skavnak said, “I enjoyed coaching the team this year. They have progressed tremendously.” THE 1982-83 WRESTLING TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Scott Tahonnie, Dan I.aBre, Cory Shi Ison, Jim Marlin. Faculty Division — 169 FACULTY OUR SOUTH HIGH ADMINISTRATORS: SEATED: Principal; Mr. Dahl. STANDING: Assistant Principals; Mr. Johnson, Mr. Cady, and Mr. Rutherford. I. Mr. Cady talks on the phone to a student's parent. 5. Mr. Rutherford talks to a student about his school records. 6. Mr. Johnson hands a student her 3rd tri program. 7. Mr. Johnson test the new computer, which will be used for attendance records next year. 8. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Rutherford discuss school business. 170 — Administration Administrators Pleased With Merger Progress The Administration was really pleased with how “remarkably smooth” the merging of the schools went in September. With a lot of changes and “a lot of hard work” it all worked out as well as anyone could expect. The South High student body is twice as large as the year before, which means that there are more class offerings and a chance to study classes in more depth. The Principal and the three Assistant Principals each have individual duties to perform. Mr. Dahl, the principal, is in charge of the extra curricular activities, budgets, faculty meetings, and council, and P.U.S.H. (Parent United for South High). All three assistant principals are in charge of the lunchroom and have individual duties. Mr. Cady takes care of students with last names beginning with A-G, and handles field trip buses. Partnership. Linkage, and Student Council. Mr. Johnson handles students H-O and is in charge of buses, building (desks, equipment). Open school and special education. Mr. Rutherford has students P-Z and takes care of students and faculty programs, tally day, and the Magnet program. Even though South has 4 principals, they all keep busy each day guiding and advising students and staff so that the school continues to run smoothly. There has been a lot of adjustment to be made this year and our principals all agree that next year should be even better. 171 Aim. Larry Anderson. Cordon Anderson. Michael Axclson.
