Editor Eric Moen and Assistant Editor Terry Mencel held weekly meetings for each issue, and assigned stories to the Sophomore and Junior reporters. “We ran into the usual problems of production.” said Editor Eric Moen, “but I think our paper was tops in the city. Photo Editors, Todd Lindstrom, Glen Thoreson, and Jeff Scott had charge of planning cover photos and the inside photo spread, which was usually a feature story about students. The staff worked hard to make a good paper with the contributing efforts of Southerner Advisor George Schell, who holds the distinguished service award from the Minnesota High School Press Association. We had a lot of experienced students on the staff from last year. There were a lot of newcomers too. The staff consisted of 16 students including 2 photographers, Jeff Scott and Todd Lindstrom. The 2 editors were Jeff Hoch and Melanie Frazier. The new students didn't think completing a yearbook would be so much work, but they were proven wrong by our advisor Mr. Wold, when he started to pile the work on us. It was tough but we stuck together, and finally finished one of the best yearbooks ever. 1. Tiger Staff Advisor. We have physical fitness courses, social dance, and community intramurals for active individuals. Foreign born students can improve their understanding of English. We invite senior citizens to come together for socializing and health clinics. The Community School provides the base from which community action can develop. (Mother and Infant Care Education) program at South High is to enable young mothers to continue and finish their education. It is a special education program partially funded by Hennepin County under Title XX. It is also a licensed day care facility big enough for twelve infants and toddlers. The children have to be between six weeks and two and a half years to be in the program. The mothers attend five classes regularly. Two classes with the M.I.C.E. program, a Family Life Parenting class and a class in Child Developement. The other three classes are regular classes and electives. 1. However, lack of communication to the rest of the homeroom students was a slight problem. The Student Union had no active official advisor. This gave the Student Union Officers more freedom to perform their tasks. More projects, other than Homecoming and SnoDaze activities were handled this year. The projects of Student Exchanges and Build-A-Bet-ter School helped to raise the morale of students and the image of the school. JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES: BOTTOM ROW: Monica Copeland, Tiffany Corgan. The program is coordinated by Charles Swanstrom, and Ed Ralph who run the senior work programs. Clete Swintek who runs the junior work program, and Ruth Schultz who runs the Pride work program. The students are required to take three morning classes which include an English, the work program class in which they earn a social studies credit, and one other class of their choice. Most of the students go straight to work after their morning classes. At work they earn two elective credits plus their salary for work. At least every two weeks their coordinator will meet them and their supervisor at their place of employment to see if they are working up to par. According to the principal, George Dahl, there is a good chance of adding a ninth grade and boundary changes to the school in the Fall. The declining enrollment this year has caused this to come about. South has set up many programs this year which act as a model to other schools. And hopefully they will continue to be supported in the future years. Mr. Goldstrand, who returned for his second year as Assistant Principal, believes that the students were very dedicated and willing to work. He was pleased with the school year and thought it ran smoothly. He said there was an increased amount of cooperation from students which helped out a great deal. The other Assistant Principal. Mr. Cady, returned again with great confidence. He was happy with the overall achievements of the students and felt that their performance was very acceptable. 76 — Administration 1981 South High Administrators: George Dahl. Cheerleaders are the bacKbone behind school spirit. They not only help to get the audience involved, but they also pep up our teams by T.P.ing the locker rooms, hanging up banners ana posters, and having fund raisers. Whatever you can think of — they do it! Being a cheerleader means full dedication to the job. First of all there are the long hours of practice, which usually starts about a month before the sport does. Then comes the ordering of the uniforms which cost a pretty penny, and it all comes out of the cheerleaders own pockets! Even though cheerleading was alot of work, the girls will all agree that this year has been alot of fun! 1981 HOCKEY CHEERLEADERS: BOTTM: Jackie Ott. CENTER: 1981 WRESTLING CHEERLEADERS: Debby Kazuk. This year the Tigerettes started the year with 27 girls, and ended up with 24. This is the most they’ve had on the line. They practiced long hard hours, which meant about 40 hours of practice for any single dance, and about 100 hours for a competition dance. This years winnings included a second place at the Stout Competition, where they also took the trophy for Best all Around, first in the city, and third in the state. Before State Competition, they practiced extra hard, with three practices a day including one in the morning from about 6-7:20, one in the afternoon from 1:30-3:30 or 4:30, and then one in the evening from 5:30-8:00. At State they received a score of 97.5 out of 100, which in Loyal Brezny's words is an Ultra Excellent Score! He also mentioned that state is a very rough competition not just because of the fact that there are so many schools that are good, but because competition is so close, the abilities are about the same which makes winning tough. Heading the squad was Varsity Coach Richard Friedrichsen and Assistant Coach Anita Rindflesh who coached the Junior Varsity squad. The teams played tough and had alot of spirit. Even though their record ( 2-7 ) was not what it could have been, the team showed alot of character. The fans that attended the games were the rowdiest ever and took part in the fun. He placed third in the City meet which was the best by a South runner in several years. Coach Kaari says that Training for 4 years has made Mike a very talented runner. The team as a whole had a relatively lack luster season with 2 wins and 6 loses. The wins were over Edison and West. Coach Kaari attributes this to the lack of runners, which means not as much talent, and therefore the team was not at its full capacity of strength. In the region however. South defeated Edison. North. Washburn and West. A Tremendous improvement over the regular season. 1981 JUNIOR HIGH CROSS COUNTRY TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Tim Yaeger. Joe Martin. Doug Nelson. TOP ROW: Kim Malberg. The mens team was very successful, with lots of practice to benefit them. The team finished third in the region and second in the city. The four scoring men were Mike Fredel, Dan Hansen. Hannu Korpi, and Dan O'Connell. Coach Axelson said he enjoyed the year with good snow and active participation by the team members. The girls would have done much better, but there was not enough participation. There were only three girls who skied the entire season. They were Dana Jones. Sarah Kreft, and Kim Fleck. Records Fall As Swimmers Have Great Season The Tigers swam to one of their more successful seasons this year despite posting only a 2-6 record. Led by captains Dawn Jensen and Anne Nelson, the mermaids downed the teams from Central and Roosevelt. What the team lacked in numbers they made up for in determination. swimming up to four miles a day and lifting weights. But the hard work paid off and school records fell. Anne Nelson set the record for the 100 yd. backstroke. Dawn Jensen was most improved, taking twelve seconds off of her 100 yd. freestyle. Monica Capra now holds records in the 50 yd.. 100 yd., and 500 yd. freestyle events, and the 200 yd. individual medley. Diane Janey holds the records for the 200 yd. freestyle, and the 100 yd. butterfly. Heather Broden set sophomore and varsity records in the 100 yd. breaststroke events. Our divers. They were led by senior captains Michael Harris and Michael Davis and got great efforts from Todd Jeffers, Chock Norris and Paul Dixon as well. Although the cagers finished the season with a 11-5 conference record their games were marred by their lack of consistent play. They played exciting games against Central and North and were successful in both attempts against our rival Teddies. A strong team brought record attendance and during many games the fans were constantly on their feet. Coach Magdanz felt the cagers could have had a better season but was pleased by the efforts of all his players. The varsity team will have only one returning player for next year but the school closings should bring further experience. 1981-82 SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL SQUAD: SEATED: Kenny Washington and Mike White. The girls had long and hard practices coached by Don Sovell and Teresa Askew. They showed much enthusiasm throughout each game. They were led by Varsity Captain Melanie Frazier, who was the teams top scorer. Girls Basketball — 101 Team Spirit Shows Through Despite Losing Hockey Season This years hockey season got off to a slow start, but with many new members, this can always be expected. They were challenged throughout the year and as a result several improvements were made in their style as well as their performance. Jim Larch was the teams captain and he contributed to it a great deal throughout the season. One outstanding instance was when he scored five goals in a Central game that led to our victory. Paul Goclon was also a valuable member, but he was forced out due to an injury at the beginning of the season. Although the team had a losing record of 2-12-0, we can look forward to an older and more experienced team next year. THE 1981-82 JUNIOR VARSITY HOCKEY TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Henry Black. Most of the matches were decided in one or two weights. South showed improvement by winning its last three matches of the regular season. The team, with only five seniors should step into contention for the city title in the near future. Junior Varsity wrestlers had an outstanding team record of 8-2. The individual season was highlighted by championships at the Maple Lake Tournament for 185 lb. Kevin Hogland, and 98 lb. Dan LeBre. Cory Hermann, at 155 lbs. wrestled to two second place finishes in major tournaments. Dan LeBre was 98 lb. champion in the Anoka Tournament. The Men's Swimming Team of 1981 1982 may have lacked numbers, but quality was not missing. At the start of the year, twenty-two swimmers were on the team; unfortunately only five stuck with it for the whole season. With the lack of numbers, many changes had to be made. Only one person swam the same event as last year. Jim Corbesia performed the Back Stroke and Butterfly. Jim White was the teams diver. Tony Stewart changed from the Crawl to the Back Stroke. Dan Zuriff went from Freestyle to the Breast Stroke, and Robert Hansen swam Long Distance. We needed fourteen for a complete team, with only five members we were unable to win any meets, said Coach Anderson. Next year, the merger of Marshall-tl and Central High with South will help out the South Swim Team. Coach Anderson also stated. We have the quality over Marshall-CJ and Central swimmers, but with them we will have enough in numbers to fully compete. 1981-1982 MEN'S SWIMMING TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Coach Mike Anderson. Tony Stewart. Big Changes In Store For South! At the time the main body of this yearbook went to press, the Minneapolis School Board had announced tentative plans for massive boundary changes and school closings for the city. The high schools slated to close were Central, Mar-shall-CI, and West. These changes mean that South will change dramatically for the 1982-83 school year. Among the changes will be the additions of a 9th grade class, most of the school population from Marshall-CJ., and the Magnet Program from Central. It is expected that South will have an enrollment of over 1600 in the Fall. The changes will mean that the staff at South will probably double, and students will have a much greater selection of courses. E. Hennepin Av 1. South High- The Survivor. 2. Central High will close. South will receive the Magnet Program. 3. Marshall (1 will close. Most students will attend South. 4. The proposed new boundaries for South High School. In most positions the team lacked experience, but the team members played up to their ability. The team was led by captain and first singles player Chris Angelos. The most consistent player was Mark Wagner who finished the season with five wins.
