Volleyball Team Has Winning Spirit Although the volleyball team didn’t have a winning record (3-11) they did have winning spirit throughout the season. The main problem of the team was getting keyed up enough to play their best. The fans this year were better than usual and once they started cheering there was no stopping the volleyball team. The fans were greatly appreciated. The team was in the Blake Tournament in which they placed third and they also played in the MaCa-lester Tournament. Playing on the team brought about a closeness within the players that is hard to explain. Since many of the players were seniors they made the most of the year and put their best into the team. Richard Friedrichsen was the Coach and he was admired and respected by all the team. Anita Rind-flesh was the Assistant Coach. The J. V. squad had a record of (3-5). Their squad improved each game and there will be many experienced players for the Varsity Team next year. 1. Sue Bjornson dives tor the ball as Jamne Martinez and Colleen Schuda stay ready. 2. Football Spirit Soars After a slow start the 1980 edition of South Football developed into one of the better teams of the last two decades. Highlights were the 13-11 victory at Roosevelt and the 11-0 Homecoming win over Southwest. In the Roosevelt game. Quarterback Gary Dorr, receivers Dean Pendleton and Lance Taylor, running back Danny Howes and blocker Mike Bender led the best offensive surge South has had since 1973. The Homecoming victory was a sweet win that featured near perfect defense and a long scoring run by Tony Vossen and a 40 yard pass from Gary Dorr to Rudy Gonzalez. The team had excellent leadership from tri-captains Mike Bender. Kevin Hoylitya, and Tony Vossen as well as other seniors. This led to good team spirit which grew as the season progressed. The players selected Dean Pendleton as Most Valuable. Mike Bender Most Valuable Defensive Player and Danny Howes as team player of the year. THE 1980 VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Mike Bender.
