On that very same day, Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the four tie th President of the United States. The United States welcomed home the hostages and so did approximately one-hundred South High students and teachers. On January 20th, two bus loads full of South people went to the state capitol to sign the yellow ribbon that had encircled the Foshay Tower for more than a week after the fifty-two were released. They met Governor Al Quie and joined him in a ceremony congratulating the fifty-two for their courage through their ordeal. Other schools from the state were there to sign the ribbon and join in the festivities. I. A yellow ribbon over 300 feet long encircled the Foshay Tower after the release of the hostages. II West Side Story”-Largest Crowds Ever For A South Musical This year's fall musical was West Side Story”, which was comprised of about 60people in the cast and crew. There were about 3,000 people who attended the performances. This included the four nights and the two matinees, one for the Jr. Highs and another for the English classes. This year's production represented many weeks of effort by the Cast. Crew. Terry Hanson. Nancy Doede. Lois Arth and many others who made this production a hit. As with any musical production at South, the cast endured hours of strenuous dance, music, and acting rehearsals. This particular play was chosen not only for its challenge but because of its subject matter. The musical is a modern adaptation of Shakepeare's Romeo and Juliet”, with the setting in New York. The musical is centered around the fighting ghetto gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Tony's (played by Bill Brown) love for Maria (Lori Schuda) is shattered by the hatred of the two gangs, that led to misunderstanding and tragic bloodshed. WEST SIDE STORY CREW. The main problem of the team was getting keyed up enough to play their best. The fans this year were better than usual and once they started cheering there was no stopping the volleyball team. The fans were greatly appreciated. The team was in the Blake Tournament in which they placed third and they also played in the MaCa-lester Tournament. Playing on the team brought about a closeness within the players that is hard to explain. Since many of the players were seniors they made the most of the year and put their best into the team. Richard Friedrichsen was the Coach and he was admired and respected by all the team. Anita Rind-flesh was the Assistant Coach. The J. V. squad had a record of (3-5). Football Spirit Soars After a slow start the 1980 edition of South Football developed into one of the better teams of the last two decades. Highlights were the 13-11 victory at Roosevelt and the 11-0 Homecoming win over Southwest. In the Roosevelt game. Quarterback Gary Dorr, receivers Dean Pendleton and Lance Taylor, running back Danny Howes and blocker Mike Bender led the best offensive surge South has had since 1973. The Homecoming victory was a sweet win that featured near perfect defense and a long scoring run by Tony Vossen and a 40 yard pass from Gary Dorr to Rudy Gonzalez. The team had excellent leadership from tri-captains Mike Bender. Kevin Hoylitya, and Tony Vossen as well as other seniors. This led to good team spirit which grew as the season progressed. The Cross Country teams this year had it kind of rough. Their teams lacked participation. The guys team had 10 runners to start the year, including Tony Capra who was in the 7th grade. Due to injuries they lost a few of these runners. The girls team started out with only 4 runners. Nora Petersons was injured and Angie Shea moved, so they ended the season with only 2 runners. (5 runners are needed for competition to place.) Mike Capra made All-City this year, and he came only I second away from going to the state meet. All of the runners worked hard. The average day usually consisted of running before and after school, and individual workouts on weekends. The season this year ended with 4 wins and 4 losses for the guys, and 0 wins and 8 losses for the girls. Yet all in all the team had a good season. Coach Warren Kaari commented. there wasn’t enough bodies out” and added. they all did a good job considering the number of people out and the fact that many were beginners. 1980 MEN S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM. Cross Country — 31 Women's Tennis Team Improves With Practice This years women's tennis team had nine girls and was coached by Stephen Lindquist. Although the overall scores weren’t the best, their individual games were quite good. The team members practiced every day after school at Powderhorn Park for about two or three hours except on Fridays. At practices the girts worked hard, got help from the coach, improved their games, and had fun playing tennis against each other. All the hard work at practices paid off for Karla Anderson when she won the first match at regions. Also playing at regions were. Rhonda Thompson playing singles. Karin Gustafson and Maree Koll playing doubles, and Vicky Vifquain and Gail Thompson also playing doubles. This year the tennis team was small and at times was short players at the matches. They picked up lots of new ideas that they used during the football season and will continue through the rest of the year. The squad was pleased with the growth in spirit and they tried to keep it up as the year went along. This growth was aided by two fine captains . .. Denise Work cuff and Ann Kellington. seniors. They performed at various football and basketball games, coronations and special events. such as the boys basketball preview. This was quite an honor since no one has ever performed there before. This year the Tigerettes also went out and competed against other dancelines throughout the state. They brought home two trophies, were first in the city, and last year took third place in the State of Minnesota Competition. The girls worked very hard in order to place at these, approximately six hours a day. five days a week. Each girl spent between two-hundred and three-hundred dollars per year on uniforms, jackets, special costumes and odds and ends. They cut the costs by having fund raising projects, such as car washes, selling things etc . .. Captains were Erica Aarvig and Wanda Anderson. Line captains were Laura Marden and Gail Thompson. He was assisted by Pam Finch who coached the Junior Varsity squad. It was tougher playing on this years team due to the lack of team members. Although the team was small, they never lost their enthusiasm for the game. This showed in the close losses against North and Washburn and also in their many victories. No one on the team was disappointed as many improvements and friends were made. Next years team will be larger with many returning Varsity and Junior Varsity players. 1980SI JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBAll TEAM. BOTTOM ROW: Lori It ham. and Mane Swenson. CENTER ROW: Diane Janey. Women's Basketball -IS Young Wrestlers Improve The Men's Wrestling team this year was made up of very young and inexperienced wrestlers. Considering this lack of experience the team had a very satisfying season. They all worked hard and kept improving. They ended with a strong finish by winning 3 out of their last 4 matches. The Coach this year was once again Coach We-bert. but this year they added an assistant Coach. John Newman. The team captains this year were Ed Kurschner. a senior and Tim Topitzhofer. a junior. The Wrestling team is looking forward to good seasons in following years for they are only losing two seniors. Brian Rich and Ed Kurschner. Juniors Tim Topitzhofer, Cory Hermann. For the first time in five years the eagers had a winning season. With a 4th place city conference finish the squad was possibly the most improved team in the league. One of the reasons for their success was the return of seniors Lance Taylor and Dean Pendleton, co-captains. Also the return of Greg Almendina and Chris Nutter, forwards. Their return gave the squad knowledge about the other conference teams. Other reasons for success were Michael Harris. Dave Wilhelmi and Michael Davis, all transfer students. They gave the team speed and height. Coach Magdanz. leader of the varsity eagers for 8 years was never afraid to turn to his bench in times of trouble, for everyone there was capable of playing good, tough basketball. He feels that they may be the team of next year with 9 members of the squad returning. Each of these members have had years of playing experience. 1980-81 SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL SQUAD, David Downwind. Five skiers attended a five day ski camp at Isabella, Minnesota before the season began. The team practiced nearly every day even without snow. They ran at various parks and often worked out at Theodore Wirth Park, where there was a patch of artifical snow they were able to ski on. Only one official meet was held. It was the City sec-tion meet held at Highland Hills. David Kreft finished seventh and the team finished fourth of nine teams. Skiing — 5 = QV jjyuut) fyjbdiL-. QJbnliKMd Q5 AM) JiXASL L5 Jthixj. It was a new assistant principal by the name of Robert Goldstrand. When he was transferred to South from Roosevelt he became very loyal to South and the enforcement of our policies. After 8 years with the Teddies he said that it was a nice change. He was very pleased and impressed by the students and their great school spirit as well as by the faculty and their desire to help and encourage the students to graduate. Mr. Dahl and Mr. Cady remained here however and were well aware of the South High ropes. Mr. Cady was very happy with South this year and hopes it wasn't just a one year thing. He enjoys working with kids and thinks that South has a very good group of them. He doesn’t want to have to leave here in the near future and we shared those feelings with him. Mr. Dahl on the other hand had very serious words for the year. When asked his comments he replied, When your High School days are gone, they are gone forever. Your years are all memories. It is our hope that the memories are good ones. We have tried to balance an academic program which is meaningful with an extra curricular program that is memorable. For everyone we wish you the best of luck always. Administration — 91 Anderson, James Anderson. Michael Axelson, Richard Bark meter. David Berg. David Brezny. Loyal Chambers. Richard Darwich. Secretary Rcndena Ritchie and Advisor Richard Kramer. Student Union Plans Many And Varied School Events The Student Union this year was not as active as in past years. However, the activities they did sponsor were successful. This year was the first time in recent years that South High School had a parade during Homecoming. This was sponsored by the Student Union. Other activities included the planning of Homecoming Week and Sno-Daze Week. The officers this year had a hard time getting students involved. This was also found in other groups here at South. No one really knows of the exact reasons for this lack of participation, but it seems school morale was lower than in past years. THE 1980 81 STUDENT UNION MEMBERSHIP BOTTOM ROW, Tracy Enizel. Groups — 107 GROUPS Tiger Staff Strives For Excellence! This year the Tiger Staff worked especially hard on the 1981 Tiger Yearbook to try and make it the best in years. They finally decided on a theme of a letter”, where the Senior Class is writing an outline of the past year to the Sophomore and Junior Classes. They tried to combine humor, realism, and tact as it applied to the school year. The staff consisted of sixteen members including co-editors Cathy Mathews and Karen Bre-zinka. This years staff was a dedicated one. They put in many hours during school and on their own time. The yearbook photographers. Gail Thompson. Jim Anderson. and Annette Jeffrey spent a good share of their time taking and processing the pictures that went into this years Tiger. Mr. Wold, the yearbook advisor, also put in a lot of time and care to make the 1981 Tiger a successful one. THE 1981 YEARBOOK EDITORS: Karen Brezinka and Cathy Mathews. Yearbook Advisor. The Southerner has changed its format to magazine. with more department divisions and features that incorporate many new ideas. New additions. Lookin' Around South , and a photo cover were added this year. A Special section is done to tell about the events that happened after regular deadline dates. The students got much experience from the writing involved. They also attended workshops to help them. In January the Southerner staff hosted the first meeting of other editors in a workshop which was highlighted by a press conference with Supt. Richard Green. Seventeen girls were about to give a performance that had taken a year and countless hours of practice. This was state competition, all the eggs were in one basket. Each girl knew that this would be the only chance after a year of work, to show everyone in the state of Minnesota, that they, the South High Tigerettes, were capable of taking the state title. Captains Wanda Anderson and Erica Aarivg had given their total concentration toward that goal. Peggy Arntson choreographer, had worked hard bringing together her best effort regarding costume and dance. Now, all that remained was the performance. Each girl marched toward the center of the court with a single idea, being of one mind and as a unit made up of seventeen parts, none more important than the other. The system worked, as with the start of the music, South High danced it's way into the state record books. 6 Tigerettes - 3 1. The lead roles of John Human and Barbara Allen were portrayed by Doug Harris and Lori Dorn-browskis. The play itself was about an Appalachian legend telling the story of a witch boy and a human girl who fell in love, and the conflicts which arouse because of the differences between their worlds. The title song, The Ballad of Barbara Allen was composed and sung by a former South High student, Bruce Bed-narchuk. This was just one of the many special additions to the play. Other special effects were mountain fog, thunder, and lightning. DARK OF THE MOON' CAST: BOTTOM ROW: Jim Stephenson, Colleen Schuda, Steve LeBre, Lise Dickson, Lori Doabroskls, and Doug Harris. Men's Tennis - 9 BASEBALL REINSTATED JUST BEFORE START OF SEASON The 1981 Tiger baseball season was again marked by an up and down performance. The Tigers played a very tough non-conference schedule which included the 1980 State Champions, Coon Rapids. The Tigers conference season started out with a 2-1 victory over Roosevelt. The pitching of Tom Dyvig and the hitting of Tony Vossen and Gary Dorr made this possible. The Tigers then lost their next six games until thier victory over West.
