The first event A was a Spaghetti Dinner on Monday night sponsored by the Junior class. Entertainment was provided as a most enjoyable meal was served. Tuesday was Sophomore day and the Coronation followed in the evening. After much suspense, Bill Marden and Sandy Agustin were crowned King and Queen. On Wednesday, the Seniors beat the Sophomores and Juniors in the Powder Puff game even though it was Junior Day. During the lunch periods, a Wild and Wooly Rent- a -Tiger auction took place. The slaves performed various chores for their masters on Friday of Homecoming week. On Thursday it was Senior day and the Hayride at Hanson's Ranch was held that evening. Last but not least, on Friday the Big Game was played followed by the Homecoming Dance. The game was against Prior Lake and at the dance, we listened to the group, Toys , I fm., .. J .xx Homecoming --- Class OfHcers This year the Sophomores got off to a late start. They didn't know what the procedures were for getting involved. After the nomina- tions, the candidates had three days for cam- paigning. They gave speeches and the next day the voting took place. Juniors were concerned with getting the class involved more by having more fund raisers and class activities. They were trying to prepare for their Senior year by building the foundation for 1980. This is the last year for the Senior class. When they started in the 10th grade, their goals were to have a lot of class spirit and enthusiasm. Although there could have been more participa- tion over all, it has been 3 great years for the class of 79 . Also, during Homecom- ing week, they sponsored the hayride and door prize con- test. Members sold candy canes and suckers during the holiday season, and gave all of the teachers apples. A display case was set up with a calendar and other notices of events as well as pictures of Homecoming and Sno-Daze royalty. The Union tried to generate school spirit but unfortunately it died and a funeral was held in the commons in January. Re- quired classes help the student to fill the five con- secutive classes needed by law for each day and gives the student the necessary education pre- scribed by law. The required classes gives the student the ability to read, write, and mentally think. The required classes not only give training for the mental mind but also for the physical body. The required classes consist of English, History, Health, Physical Ed. and Math or Science. The required number of credits that must be obtained by a student to gra- duate, is forty-five. Twenty-one of those are in elective classes. All of the language classes except German were offered this year. Other classes offered were: Driver Education, Consumer Clothing, Econom- ics, Industrial Arts, Typing plus numerous music classes. This years elective classes seemed to bring out the talents of the students in such classes as art and music. Many students have taken the two-hour block classes at South as well as other schools. This gives students the chance to meet kids from different schools and the chance to persue some type of career. 20 Elective Classes Xi xx Q l sk! 1. sss 'Sans l1IfQ1w- ft: i 9' X .t Xt --sums lu.. Pep Band would have liked to play at all the basketball and hockey games, but because of a budget cut they were only allowed to perform at four games for each sport. Jazz Band started out small this year with only ten players, but their numbers increased during the year. Among their performances were Homecoming Coro- nation, the Holiday Concert, Sno Daze Coronation, and they hoped to take a performing trip in the Spring. -xr? 'f -1- . 3 4 , -. - if x ... There were three performing choral groups in the Music Department this year. Concert Choir, Variations and South Singers were busier than ever giving about fifty to sixty concerts at elementary and junior high schools, and they also performed at public places like the Government center and Twin City Federal. A new class offered this year was stage techniques. In this class students learned about var- ious technical skills and stage equipment, and also about stage production. The Music Department went on a trip to Los Angeles and San Francisco during spring break. They planned to go to Los Angeles by plane first, then drive up the coast to San Francisco and fly home. Over 1600 people were in attendance during the four even- ing performances on Dec. 6,7,8,9. As in the past, there was a matinee for the local Jr. Highs, and a series of previews for the English classes. Music Man is the story of a traveling salesmanfconman called f Prof. Harold Hill. He tries to persuade a small Iowa town that they desperately need a boys band, to keep the boys occupied with something benefitial instead of playing pool. While trying to do this he falls in love with Marion Paroo, the town librarian. He then realizes that what he was doing was wrong. 'Q This year was unique in the fact that it involved past alumni whose interests lie in the theater. The cast of 42 and crew of 20 was once again directed by Terry Hanson. Music Man was one of the biggest productions put on by South High in many years. There were three buses which brought the students to the dance. Eighty students stepped out of the bus. Two by two the students went in the barn. There was a lot of space to dance in the barn. Some couples sat and talked while others just relaxed. Square dancing was the dance of the evening. During the dancing some couples went on a Hay ride. There were two tractors and a team of horses pulling the wagons. Some students were disappointed because there were no Bon-fires or Marriage Ceremonies as in the past. Even though they were disappointed by the lack of tradition, they all agreed that the night was a fun one. it A , g f S . K I -IB! .. isxlgy . ' in 3, S K .f iiilrii 5 K sl if t . TO . tg, ' Q- fig-. Many events were offered to students such as downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snow- mobiling, rollerskating and many others. There were also the possibilities of staying at South for open gym, a movie or other activities. Winterim was another chance to regain the lost spirit, but it wasn't regained. The attendance seems to be getting smaller every year. The 300 students who did attend had a great time, but it is doubt- ful that there will be a Winterim next year, because of the poor participation. 1 ., 'NV L . . t iff If I - n i f f , i ,ft ,gs 4- f 1 1 W A I. Winterim Junior Class Holds Many Activities To Keep Up Class Spirit At the end of the 1977-78 school year the Sopho- mores elected their class officers for the 1978-79 school year. The new Junior officers were Cathy Wurzer, Presidentg Barb Marden, Vice-Presidentg Lori Nyenhuis, Treasurer and Darcy Alm, Secretary. During the year they held various activities to keep the Juniors active. The best fund raiser was a Spa- ghetti Dinner during Homecoming week. During Sno- Daze week they sold sweetheart suckers for Valen- tines Day and they also sponsored another slave day. With the money they made they had a lock-in for the junior class. The junior class consisted of 186 boys and 166 girls. inf tt. 1 l. Nancy Myers and Marie Capra entertain at the spaghetti dinner. 2. This year Sno-Daze week was one day short because of tally day, but there were still many students that participated in the many events. The Sno-Daze week was as follows: Tuesday was Winterim day which was full of activities like skiing, bowling, skating, and tours. Wednesday was Sophomore day and Thursday was Junior day with the annual Coronation of the king and queen as the highlights. This years king was Tony Costello and the Queen was Ginny Jones. Friday was Senior day and the Sno-Daze dance with 'Spectro Sound' to light up the music that made you want to dance. This year there were about two hundred tickets sold for the dance. This amount was greater than last year and could be attributed to the weather that was just right. ln the past few Lypars the weather had been either to cold and snowy or to warm and mushy. The majority of those who are no longer here, have either transferred to other schools, or are now working full time. South has lost a great deal of students that have put a lot of time and effort into their work. This year the Senior class sponsored many events such as Sadie Hawkins, the Senior and Junior Prom, Senior Ban- quet, and Picnic. Working hard, keeping their spirit up, and deciding their future plans, kept the class of 79 very busy all year until graduation day which was held on June 6th l979 . 'wi , t. This year's Administrative staff has remained unchanged since last year and includes Mr. Dahl, Mr. Larson and Mr. Cady. Each Staff member has their own seperate duties which they work hard at to perform well. Mr. Dahl, at the helm of the ship works to a great extent with Public and Human Relations. His other duties involve him in working with Budgets, Athletics, the Student Government and Community Affairs. Mr. Cady works more with the students in Class Activi- ties, Field Trips, Guide Groups, Fall Student Orientation and Lunch Room-Commons Supervision. Without his con- trolling influence, there would probably be more food fights in the lunchroom. Mr. Larson works with Building Security, Organizing the Graduation, Scheduling of Classes, Programming and Teacher Evaluation. The advisor was Bernice Smith and the Captains were Ginny Jones and Lynn Hanson. Everyone on the squad caught on really well so the team didn't have as many problems as in years past. Being a cheerleader required a lot of practice, starting in the summer at Longfellow Park and then every day after school for at least an hour. The squad consisted of I3 cheerleaders and 2 Tigers. For the first time ever, South had a Junior guy mascot, Garrin Sax. The girls paid at least 100 dollars for their uniforms. Most of the girls cheered for football and they split up for basketball and hockey. For the winter sports it was necessary to add more girls to split the squad. This years Sophomore Cheerleaders had a lot of spiritg Shannon West was their captain. There were 10 girls on the squad. All South High students are familiar with the dance line known as the Tigerettes . The Tigerettes spent their time dancing at football games, basketball games and hockey games. They also dance at pepfests, coronations and many South High events. This years dance line was chosen very carefully to insure top performances. Last April, the girls who wanted to try out for the Tigerettes made up their own dance. They performed these dances at the spring tryouts in front of former, senior Tigerettes. Those that were chosen were kidnapped from their homes at 1:00 a.m. by other Tiger- ettes. Soon after, they started their practice which lasted all summer. They were prepared for the new school year. The Tigerettes consists of 4 Seniors, 7 Juniors, and 3 Sophomores. The captains were Kordi Risvold and Lisa Rehberger. This years advisor was Loyal Brezny. He was the first male and also, they say, the best advisor theyive had. Mr. Brezny has made it possible for the Tigerettes to earn a letter for the first time. He also led the Tigerettes to spring competition, where they competed against all the dance lines in the state. They werejudged on their precision dancing. Thank-you Tigerettes, for an entertaining year! None of the members were very experienced this year, and they didn't specify any captains. They ended the season with a 2-6 record, all of their practices during the afternoons must have helped them a good deal. They practiced over at Powderhorn for two to three hours a day starting in August and going through to the beginning of October. They will all be back next year to try and do an even better job, and Coach, Ron Petrich will probably be next years coach also. Ron Petrich coached for the first time this year, but he likes Tennis and says that the girls improved a lot during the season. He also thinks that if the girls practice during the off- season they could make a pretty good team next year. Hopefully, next year the team will be bigger and then there could be a variety of talents on the team. The girls really seemed to enjoy being on the teamg they say they learned a great deal from Ron Petrich. They didn't say anything about using the new tennis court in the commons, but Ron Petrich suggests they make use of it. At least the team got a lot of exercise even though they only won a few games. 88 - Tennis LV ,EMIS ..,, A' ii M S0571 f :S ..q,, ilu, if DBCODY ,yfy fmfff GS QYQK RL mf ff. 'X L? 4 P N, . Adult Education classes are held in the Fall, Winter and Spring of each year. Classes include American Indian Culture, Foreign Cooking, Snowshoe Building, Home Improvement classes, Disco Dance, Auto Me- chanics, Typing, Welding, Woodworking and many others. Activities for children were held one night a week. Senior Citizens met during the school day on Wednes- days and Fridays. Health clinics for Seniors were held on Tuesdays and Fridays. The French Club sold candy bars towards the beginning of the year, which were a really big hit with students and teachers alike. The Spanish Club planned a trip to Padre Island off the coast of Texas, and offered other South students a chance to go also. The Black Culture Club put on a program for Black History Week that seemed a big successg with dancing, singing and poems. The TANS club was more of a community centered group that didn't ad- vertise their activities in school very much. Stage Crew participated in all of the Auditorium programs, including the musical and play. All in all it wasn't a dull year for those involved in the different groups around school. l Students from the Spanish Club listen to tapes of the Spanish Language in class. 2. Group Division Outh erner Staff Thrives .5 as Under New Advisor X- This years Southerner Staff was under the direction of a new teacher named Elaine Nygren. She had never been a newspaper advisor before and so she learned along with the students as they produced the paper. There were a lot of changes in this years newspaper such XJ asg selling adds because the staff was short on money for the paper, The first issue was made especially for the Sopho- mores and was given out on Sophomore Orientation day. This Sophomore paper was written to give Sophomores an idea of what South is like and what to expect from the schoolg The paper also got more participation from the staff because everyone helped edit etc., and as a result, issues were finished much faster. As always the staff wrote for the pleasure of South students. They tried to keep the attention of the readers throughout the whole paper. This paper lightened the day of many South High Students. C27 l X Yearbook Is Tons Of ff Work, Say Editors! South's Tiger Yearbook Staff consisted of fifteen members who dedicated a lot of their time to make this year's book the best one ever. Each and every member had their own assignments to complete throughout the first two trimesters. Scott Elms spent most of his time drawing the tigers and other things for the book. Sara Ocel and Dan McConville took most of the pictures for the book, and developed them during second hour. The editors of the staff spent a lot of their time planning the book with Mr. Wold after school, and during sixth hour it Q when the staff had class. The editors were the only three Rs 'B' people that came back from last year's staff, but next if year, hopefully, their will be almost half of the staff ' returning to try and make an even better book. All of the members had to go out and solicit ads in order to finance the book, aswell as collect money from students buying the yearbook during lunch and Tally Day. Now that you've paged through the yearbook, we hope you will enjoy it in the years to come. Af THE 1978-79 TIGER YEARBOOK STAFF: ABOVE PHOTO: BOTTOM ROW: Editors, Connie Schultz and Rcnce Schmidt. Comes To South There was a new alternative program at South this year called PRIDE QPersonal Responsibility in Daily Effortj. It was put together in order to aid students having difficulty getting involved in the school and community, and kept them from missing out on basic English and math skills. They also emphasized busi- ness education and work programs to keep the stu- dents active. The program was started during the '77-'78 school year with general planning by Mr. Cady and social worker, Helene Turnbull. But the program didn't start classes until the second tri of the '78-'79 school year. Mr. Friedrichsen, the director of the program, says that the programwas set up as a school within a school with faculty and community aides working to- gether to help the students. The South High faculty involved in the program wereg Ron Petrich, teaching Social Studies, Pat Glynn, teaching Englishg Don So- vell, teaching Mathg Harold Folkstad, teaching Busi- nessg Ruth Schultz on the Work Program, and Irving Smith teaching Basic Skills, as well as Rich Friedrich- sen. oc!
