Speech Team Speaks Out This year's speech team got off to a slow start. With Mary Michael Connolly no longer at South, the team was without a coach for quite a while. But after looking around, Mr. Dahl informed the team members that )oni Arrell, a student teacher at South, was interested. After filling Joni in with the specific details, the team got off to a great year. This year's team was made up of five previous and five new members. As Barb Blair said, Even though I thought the meets were going to be boring, I found them most enjoyable and exciting. The team participated in many Saturday meets at different high schools. Even though it was hard to get up so early Sat. morning, all of the students involved did a great job. Coach Joni Arrell summed it up saying that she was very pleased and found it to be a challenging experience for both her and the team members. 1978 SPEECH TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Patty Peterson, Tammy Wells, Natalie Los-sow TOP ROW: Nancy Brezinka, Barb Blair, Bernie Knauber, Jenny Johnson and Coach, Joni Arrell. NOT PICTURED: Marshall Bronston, Mark Feisthamel and Kaarina Ornelas. Speech Team — 17

Student Council Gets New Name This year the Student Council changed its name to Student Union. The officers wanted to get more students involved in student government. Open meetings were held in the auditorium and about 150 students attended regularly. One thing they did this year was to develop standing committees so underclassmen who have had some experience could take over the following year. They also set up a time capsule to be filled with things they felt were important to remember about this class. It will be opened at reunions. They held a Holiday Disco on December 22nd, 1977. THE 1977-78 STUDENT UNION OFFICERS AND ADVISORS: Michele Steele, Advisor; ncd( vm Becky Lane, Treasurer; Jill Miller, Vice President; Patti Peterson, Secretary; Debbie LaPlant, President and JoAnn Warnke, Advisor.
