A new assistant principal. A new World Area Studies class. The Marching Band started marching. New pre-pack lunches. No short Tuesdays. Student Council changed to Student Union. Lunchroom isn't quite so messy. Digging up the streets and repaving them. The M.I.C.E. program. (Mother Infant Care Education Program.) Theme — “What Do Yon Think Of South As A School? It's a good school, there are a lot of activities. I think it's great! I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. There are good opportunities here at South. It's sad, it sucks. I like the teachers. Getting stricter every year. You learn what you need in life. It's friendly and warm! Theme — 5 “Haw Ho You Spend 1. Ken Eskelson prefers Burger King to Souths pre-packed lunches. 2. Steve Davis in the process of filling his car up with gas. 3 Examples of how people spend their hard earned money. 4. Chris Minks and Bonnie Sorum check out the clothes at Target. 5. Terry Wells, Andy Strand, Tammy Wells, and Gen Christopherson buy tickets for a popular movie at the Nile. I In' f.l illfK- I «'V liJIin 3 6 — Feature Your Hard Earned Money?” I like to eat out at McDonalds and Burger King. I spend a lot of money on clothes and jewelry. One of my whole pay checks went to pay for my school ring. I spend money on bowling and roller skating every week. I chow down on a lot of junk food, like potato chips, pop, and candy. Since I like cruising, gas money costs me a arm and a leg, along with keeping up on all the repair bills. Going to movies every week runs into a lot of dough. The little things that you don't think about add up. You could go broke just buying a yearbook. — 7 Feature “As An Exchange Student, Svanhild Gimse — Norway The classes are harder in Venezuela. The teachers change classes and the kids stay in the same room. The government chooses the subjects for the kids and they have the same subjects all year. The teachers are stricter in Venezuela. There is more freedom here at South. I saw snow for the first time here. At our school we have different classes every day. School lasts from 8:05 - 2:25. We have fish 2 to 3 times a week. We don't have many hamburgers and we never eat corn. The weather isn't quite as cold as in Minnesota but we get snow and the Summers are hot. We go to school 9 years and have the option of continuing for another 3 years or going to a trade school. Angela Garcia — Venezuela How Dd You Feel South Is Different From Your School?” - 9 Osmar Hibu — Ethiopia Finland In our school, lunch consists of mostly soup and bread. I like the food at South better. At our school we have different classes on different days. The teachers are friendlier here at South. The classes are more difficult in Finland. South's 1977-1978 Exchange Students pose on the front steps of the school. From left to right are Angela Garcia, Svani Gimse, Osmar Hibu and Sini Nojd. Most schools at home require uniforms. Students are not allowed to choose their subjects. The government does not require people to go to school, so it is not unusual to find someone of 16 in the second or third grade. There is no cafeteria in the school like at South so we go home for lunch. Sini Nojd — “What Are You Doing The Energy Crisis has become an issue of growing importance here at South as well as in the rest of the country. All South students have been or will be affected by the attempts to conserve energy made at South this year. Some students have realized that there is a real need to conserve the country's natural resources and are doing their part to help. When asked what they were doing to help conserve energy some South students replied; I ride the bus instead of driving. We keep the thermostat below 70. Some of my friends and I started a carpool. I put a brick in our toilet. 'I wear warmer clothes to school so they can turn down the thermostats. I try to turn out the lights when I leave a room. I drive a smaller car that doesn't use much gas. We only use the air conditioner in the summer. 10 — Feature To Conserve Energy?” 1. Two South students keeping warm. 2. Tanya Nygren and friends MTC it. 3. An empty hall during February break. 4. Ozzie Dahlsten turns down the heat. 5. Terry Labrec wears his coat to class. 6. Renee Schmidt saves energy by riding her bike. 7. Jon Skramstad, Jim Taplin,Connie Schultz, Brett Dennis, and Cigi Mahoney form a carpool. Feature — 11 t 1. Jenny Gallager and Michelle Fors show off their Elvis shirts. 2. Connie Schultz displays her Elvis collection at home. 3. Elvis in concert after his long time seperation from his fans. 4. A scene from Elvis' movie, Girls Girls Girls. 5. Elvis begins to gain weight in his later years. 6. Elvis in his early years stops for some joking during the making of a movie. 7. A shot of Elvis in the movie Jailhouse Rock. 8. Elvis albums, old and new, bring back memories. 12 — Feature “How Did You Feel When He Died?” Elvis Aron Presly was born January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, and died August 16, 1977 in Memphis Tennesse. When South students were asked about their reaction to his death some reactions were, I thought it was a gimmick of some kind until I realized it was no joke. , I was shocked! , It was really sad! , I really didn't care. , It was a great loss. , He was a great person and a caring man! . Elvis was born shortly before noon and was a twin. His twin brother Jesse Garon, was still born. Elvis was born in poverty and promised his mother that he would take care of her and dad. At age 9, Elvis performed for his first audience, his classmates. At age 10, Elvis won 2nd prize in a talent contest at the fair. He sang his mothers favorite song, Old Shep . That same year his father, Vernon, bought him his first guitar. In 1953, Elvis and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennesse. In 1954, he signed a contract with Sun Records and recorded his first hit, That's All Right MaMa. Elvis was labled Elvis the Pelvis dur-ing his early years and could only be shown from the waist up on any of his early TV shows. Elvis took a break in his career to serve in the army as private U.S. 53310761, he was discharged in 1960 and continued in his career. On August 14, 1958, Elvis' mother died. Elvis took this very hard. He also carried the memory with him. In 1967, Elvis married Priscilla Beaulieu. In 1968 they had a child, Lisa Marie. In 1974 Elvis and Priscilla were divorced. The KING OF ROCK may have left stage for the last time but he will never be forgotton in the hearts of people through his 31 films, 47 45's, some 86 albums, pictures, and books. THE KING OF ROCK IS HERE TO STAY Homecoming Spirit Holds Up As The Rain Pours Down In spite of the miserable weather. Homecoming was a big success. The week of September 19-22nd held many different activities for all involved. The week began with coronation on Monday night with Steve Westby and Terri Foster being crowned King and Queen. As the week went on, the activities included a Pancake Breakfast at Viking Village bright and early on Wednesday morning and a very enjoyable hayride the following night at Hanson's Ranch. On Friday, even though the weather was downright miserable, many students went out to cheer the Tigers on at the annual Homecoming Football Game. Even though South suffered a loss with a score of 6-7 to Henry, many students still joined in at the dance that evening to conclude a very busy Homecoming week. 14 — Homecoming THE 1977 ROYALTY: Phil Caswell, Debbie LaPlant, Todd Leegard, Elaine Jensen, Dave Ott, Jodi Lindgren, Queen Terri Foster, King Steve Westby, Nancy Walsh, Sam Ocel, Jill Miller ana Keith Johnson. 1. Homecoming — 15 Student Council Gets New Name This year the Student Council changed its name to Student Union. The officers wanted to get more students involved in student government. Open meetings were held in the auditorium and about 150 students attended regularly. One thing they did this year was to develop standing committees so underclassmen who have had some experience could take over the following year. They also set up a time capsule to be filled with things they felt were important to remember about this class. It will be opened at reunions. They held a Holiday Disco on December 22nd, 1977. THE 1977-78 STUDENT UNION OFFICERS AND ADVISORS: Michele Steele, Advisor; ncd( vm Becky Lane, Treasurer; Jill Miller, Vice President; Patti Peterson, Secretary; Debbie LaPlant, President and JoAnn Warnke, Advisor. Speech Team Speaks Out This year's speech team got off to a slow start. With Mary Michael Connolly no longer at South, the team was without a coach for quite a while. But after looking around, Mr. Dahl informed the team members that )oni Arrell, a student teacher at South, was interested. After filling Joni in with the specific details, the team got off to a great year. This year's team was made up of five previous and five new members. As Barb Blair said, Even though I thought the meets were going to be boring, I found them most enjoyable and exciting. The team participated in many Saturday meets at different high schools. Even though it was hard to get up so early Sat. morning, all of the students involved did a great job. Coach Joni Arrell summed it up saying that she was very pleased and found it to be a challenging experience for both her and the team members. 1978 SPEECH TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Patty Peterson, Tammy Wells, Natalie Los-sow TOP ROW: Nancy Brezinka, Barb Blair, Bernie Knauber, Jenny Johnson and Coach, Joni Arrell. The top four that had the greatest attendence were skiing, bowling, open gym, and roller skating. A total of five hundred fifty-five students attended the fourteen selected activities. Some of them were broomball, a trip to the Capital, films, and snowmobiling. However, Winterim almost came to an end this year when it was thought that without super attendence it would be discontinued. Mr. Dahl told the class officers that he would like to have eighty percent of the students participate in the Winterim Day activities. The figures had shown that only forty-three percent of Sophomores, forty-six percent of Juniors, and fifty-one percent of the Seniors attended. Even though this is not what we hoped for Winterim is still being planned for South students to enjoy. 1. Dan Curtis expresses his cooking skills by cooking on Winterim day. 2. Ninety-eight couples boarded the bus in their best duds for the ride to Sunnybrook Farm, near Coon Rapids. Square dancing, hay rides and bonfires were all part of the action. The crowd also tried their skill at doing the Limbo, Hokey-Pokey, and Bunny Hop. While couples were out doing a Polka or Shottish others were getting married and having their pictures taken. As couples boarded the bus for the ride back to South most agreed that it had been a fun night. After getting back to South many couples went out to eat or went bowling. 1. Sadie Hawkins — 41 Blahs Break With Sno-Daze Sno-Daze week this year was hard for the Student Union to find an exact week for, with all the other school activities going on. It was finally decided that the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 4, was best. Many different activities were held throughout the entire week. Among these included, Winterim on Monday and the annual Sno-Daze Coronation on Wednesday night, with John Gonzalez and Mary Corbesia being crowned as the 1978 Sno-Daze King and Queen. All through the week there were many items sold such as pomkins and roses by the Junior and Senior classes to raise money. The week then came to a big finish with many of the students going to cheer the Tigers on at the basketball game and later going to boogie down at the Sno-Daze disco. 1978 SNO-DAZE ROYALTY: Steve Janey and Marsh Karpinen, Sophomore Attendants, Paul Hanson and Jody Anderson, Jamie Book and Tanya Nygren, Queen, Mary Corbesia and King, John Gonzalez, Nate Nygren and Kris Nelson, Kevin Wagner and Debbie Mikolajczyk, and Barb Blair and John Outlaw, Junior Attendants. 1. Mr. Cady's ideas on absence and truancy procedures are helping to make South a better school. He also is encouraging participation among the students, in class as well as extra curricular activities. George H. Dahl was our principal at South this year and when we asked him about his activities during school he replied, I am at meetings at all times of the day with students, teachers, and other people around the city. Mr. Dahl took part in many of the community related activities around school; such things as concerts, games, and other club activities were all part of his weekly schedule. Robert Larson was one of the Assistant Principals and when we asked him what he did during the day he said, I spent most of my time making up the master schedule for each trimester and tried to fit everything together for Tally Day. Besides this he also took care of the inter-school relations and the Junior and Senior activities around school. Gerry Cady was our new Assistant Principal this year. When asked what he did during the day he replied, I spent most of my time trying to get kids out of the halls and into their classes. Mr. Cady was in charge of the lunchroom activities. Sophomore activities, and truancy. He hopes to create a sense of school pride here, and we hope he can succeed. The two top runners were Carrie Boswell and Terri Cowan. Carrie set a new school record in the two mile, with a time of thirteen minutes and six seconds. Their record breaking times improved the team's record from last year. When asked how he thought the season went, Kaari said, I think the team improved a lot from last year and I think the team has a lot of potential for next year, since four out of the seven members are staying. He also hopes for a bigger team of fifteen or twenty members next year. When members were asked how they felt about Cross Country, they replied, We love it! , At first I thought it was a lot of work and really hard, but everyone was really nice and we got along really good. With only nine runners, the team really didn't have much of a chance to establish a good record this year. Coach Warren Kaari felt the team had the best runner in the city with Captain Melvin Alvarez, but injuries toward the last part of the season prevented him from doing well in city and regional competition. Before he was hurt, Melvin's best time for the season was 15 minutes and 17 seconds, which was the best time for all runners in Minneapolis this year. Coach Kaari said We have some fine runners in Juniors Jim Coneau and Don Kadlec, and if we can get a stronger squad next year we will be able to compete better and have more fun. Mens Cross Country — 73 Swimmers Break School Records This years Women's Swim Team was coached by Mike Anderson along with assistant coach Neil Anderson. Some members when asked why they went out for the team said, I know a lot of the girls and they were fun to be with , I was on the team last year and I learned a lot. When Mike Anderson was asked why he coached he said, After almost drowning in fifth grade I decided I better learn to swim and have been swimming ever since, so coaching was a natural thing for me to do. He said he's looking forward to coaching next year. He's also hoping for a larger team. 74 The 1977 GIRLS SWIMMING TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Brenda Harrity, Shelly Hartley, Karen Jasperson, Kim Wise, Laura Norman, Kathy Wurzer and Sonja Thompson. More important though, was the fact that Patti, Bridget, Tammy, and Cindy went on to the Section 5 Singles and Doubles Tournament. Since the entire varsity line up consisted of Seniors, next year will be a rebuilding year. Coach Connolly isn't worried though, because she has many good, strong players returning. Girls Tennis — 81 South Cagers Defeat Edison Twice But Finish With A Disappointing Season. This years basketball squad had a very frustrating season. Their record was 2-16. Because of the universal sickness among the team members, a decline in their winning streak emerged. The team members still contributed what they could, despite the fact they did not feel well at all. Thus, the games they performed in had close scores. This years Junior Varsity team has contained a lot of raw talent, and has produced a lot of exciting moments at their games. Many times during their games they would wait until the end of the quarter and then would bring their previous score up, in a matter of minutes. Becky Fliflet, Linda Schaff, Sara Ocel and Tanya McDavid are some of their outstanding players. Towards the end of the season it was Sara Ocel, Linda Schaff and Tanya McDavid that were able to play on the Varsity team. They all had to buy their own uniforms which cost each cheerleader 75 to 100 dollars for the entire outfit. This year's squad was invited to attend the Cheerleading Clinic at the University of Minnesota which was put on by the U. Cheerleaders. It was a full day which included learning new cheers, lunch and the University Football game against Washington. The Cheerleaders also had many fund raisers this school year. They sold memo boards, had a bake sale and a car wash. When asked why they wanted to be Cheerleaders, some of the girls said, I thought it would be fun. I wanted more sophomore spirit. It gives me something to do. I go to all the basketball games anyhow, so why not become a cheerleader and get in free. Heaven Can Wait, a three act fantasy produced for the winter play March 9 and 10, was a story of a fighter, played by Ed Gleason, who was called to heaven too early. The mistake was discovered by the head angel, played by Tim Dickson, and the messenger who brought him, played by Cindy Gomez. The fighter eventually becomes the champion after solving a murder and falling in love. The overall production was designed and directed by George Schell. I chose this 1940 play because there was a good story to tell and I thought the student body could relate to the prize fighting image, especially after the film 'Rocky'. There were two students that were from the U. of M. to help with the production. Mark Michaelson who worked with the technical end of the play and Mary Mooney who worked directly with the cast in their preparation of lines. With less than five weeks of rehersal they practiced all they could. The cast rehersed during winterim, energy break, tally day, and any other days that school was not in session. All of this paid off because now they can relate to their characters and to each other in a much more realistic way. There were some changes in the musical this year at South. First, we had a Fall musical instead of our usual Spring musical. Second, under the direction of John Clark Donahue and through the help of the Children's Theatre, cast members got to relay their own ideas and values through the play. The musical was about a person trying to find his inner self, his center. The people that participated in the musical and members of the audience said that it made them think about themselves and where they were heading in life. Ed Gleason, who played the character Marco in the play said, It was an experience. It really made me think about myself. The musical took a lot of time to prepare, including over 130 hours of rehearsal, but the cast, crew, and audience thoroughly enjoyed it. 1977-78 BULL'S-EYE CREW: BOTTOM ROW: Karl Aaberg, Dean Moe, Dave Senness, Lisa Valenti, Garrin Sax and Deanna Froehling. The Fortune Teller hands Lonnie his fortune which changes the direction of his life. 7. Lonnie's friends root for him, hoping he will win the Big Prize. Fall Musical — 105 Marching Band Returns This year the Marching Band marched back into the music department, hopefully to stay. Students got up with the sun and practiced out in the field at 8:00 A.M. every morning with only the mosquitoes for company. Unfortunately, not many students got to see the band march because while the hardworking musicians performed in the rain, snow, and ankle-deep mud at halftime, the rest of the students were safe and dry in the school. The Marching Band attended Band Day at the University of Minnesota on Oct. 1. Concert Band performed at the Holiday Concert, Spring Concert, and the South Area Band Festival. Pep Band played at several sports activities. The Jazz Band went to La Crosse Wisconsin for a band festival on Jan. 27-29, performing in small towns on the way and staying overnight at students homes. Other performances included the Eau Claire Jazz Band Festival, four South High concerts, three junior high concerts, and several community concerts. 1. Mr. Groethe makes big plans for band. 2. Angel Alexander huffs and puffs and blows out a song. 3. Greg Supalo, John Outlaw, Kevin Chambers, Athena Servis, Kaarina Ornelas, Sara Bruss, and other band members pep up the pepfest. 4. Terry Hanson said students were interested in taking voice lessons but had trouble with two choir classes, so he eliminated the group. He feels this way more people will benefit. Because Sophomores weren't allowed to join Concert Choir, the ones who joined Variations made it the best ever. Also having only Juniors and Seniors in Concert Choir made Concert Choir stronger. South Singers were busy entertaining both young and old at schools and nursing homes. To add a little spice to their Holiday Concert they performed in the Commons while refreshments were being served. Later on in the year Concert Choir and Variations performed with the Central High Choir. This gave all choirs involved a chance to hear each other and gave a better sounding performance. The choirs and band were rewarded at the end by taking a non-performing trip to Denver, Colorado. 1. Terry Hanson soothes his nerves by playing the piano. 2. Dawn Swing, Brenda Harrity and Claudia Smith warm up before a concert. 3. Mark Olson display fund raisers sold for the trip to Denver. 4. ( News Staff Works Hard Two newswriting classes each trimester meant ther were a lot of new people to train in but this means that more people will be qualified for the SOUTHERNER Staff next year. Coeditor Patty Peterson said, I see a lot of talent for next year's paper. This year, the SOUTHERNER had more student participation and because of this larger issues were published. A great deal of time goes into the SOUTHERNER, it takes approximatly three weeks from the first step, brainstorming for ideas, until the final result is reached and the paper is published. Staff members have been known to stay until nine o'clock or come as early as six in the morning to finish the newspaper before the deadline. Coeditor Barb Blair said, A lot of hard work goes into the paper, but at the end its worth it, knowing that you were able to help out. Mr. Wold, the advisor, said, It was difficult to meet deadlines because of all the holidays. This year's book had seven full-color pages instead of two and eight extra pages were added, mainly for girl's sports coverage. This year's book also had a new cover. Last summer the Tri-editors took a trip to Topeka Kansas to visit the yearbook plant and found out how the Tiger was made. They came back with a lot of good ideas that were used in this book. 1. Among these requirements are science or math, gym, health, history, and English. This year some changes have been made within these classes. No longer was sophomore world history of one certain part of the world, but instead it involved the whole world. Another change in requirements was the new English class, America, the Ideal and Real, which started last year. This class was taught by both Mrs. Reed and Mr. Bane. Not all of these required classes were as ''exciting as electives but they are improving, for kids to learn more and enjoy themselves at the same time. 123 1 Donicc Quinnell works on a Lab project in Chemistry. 2. I like my Shop classes . I have Spanish and I like it much better than any of my regular classes . Gym, Art, and Choir are my favorites . Drivers Education is my favorite because I wanted to learn how to drive . The Elective classes this year gave students a large selection to choose from. This year students not only were offered the opportunity to learn extra skills, but it made school a little more enjoyable for students who wanted variety and excitement in their classes. The Elective classes included Art, Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Business, Science, Drivers Education, and the Languages. Within these classes there were some that had a two-hour block. These were designed to give students the opportunity to get more involved in their work. It had been said, that most students that have had the two-hour block prefer two hours for the Elective classes instead of the regular one hour.
