I, I.if::.61S, 3 V . CARTER BEATS FORD IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION The big news in politics during the 1976-1977 school year was the Presidential Election which was won by jimmy Garter and Walter Mondale over Gerald Ford and his running mate Robert Dole. As a result of this elec- tion, the face of Minnesota politics took a major change. With Mondale leaving the U. S. Senate for the Vice Pres- idency, Governor Wendell Anderson took the opportunity to appoint himself to that position. Replacing him as gov- ernor was Lieutenant Governor, Rudy Perpich. During the Fall of 1976, Senator Hubert Humphrey recovered from major cancer surgery. Upon returning, he was given a special job in the U.S. Senate. At South the Eleventh grade teachers, made it pos- sible for their students to understand the election pro- cess so they can vote when they are at least eighteen years of age. Much involvement was displayed by student participation in political campaigns. The teachers gave students information about the political headquarters they could contact to help evaluate the candidates. Political candidates spoke to the Seniors at South. The two most important, were Congressman Don Fraser of the fifth district and his opponent Richard Erdahl. Stan Enebo, Martin Sabo and janet Clark, State Repre- sentatives, were among the speakers. The students were registered to vote, and every Sen- ior eligible to vote had the chance to cast their ballot. I Fe ature 1 1
