Media Plays Major Role In Lives Of South Students What does the average South student do in his spare time? Chances are the Mass Media plays a major role in his life. Most students probably spend several hours each week watching TV, listening to records, at the movies, or reading a good book. In television, perhaps the most popular of the Mass Media , 1975-76 saw the rise of numerous detective-police shows and situation comedies, many of which collapsed after a few episodes. Some of the popular ones, at least among South students, were Happy Days , Welcome Back Kotter , Starsky and Hutch , and the soap opera spoof, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman . In books, the big thing seemed to be murder and mayhem. Among the bestsellers at South were The Family , Helter Skelter , and of course Jaws . One of the most expensive hobbies of South students, and high school age students all over the country, is record collecting. In 1975 and 1976 some of the big recording artists were The Stones , Led Zep , Chicago , Elton John , Olivia Newton John , and John Denver . First released in 1975, the biggest box office hit of movie history continued to play into 1976. This of course was Jaws , the big fish movie that set records in earnings that many said will never be broken. BY PETER BENCH LEY 10

Homecoming Great Success Homecoming this year was shortened from a full week to three days because of the teachers conventions, but this did not dim our spirit or success. The week began with the coronation Monday night of Queen Diane Moats and King Chuck Lamb. Following on Tuesday was the Hay ride and on Wednesday, the triumph of the South Football team over Southwest 12 to 6. The Homecoming week came to a close with the dance Wednesday night, to the music of Woodrose. Other activities during the week were sales of Li 11 Orbit donuts, cotton candy, caramel apples, buttons, balloon tickets, garters and pennants by the various classes and organizations. All in all, this years Homecoming was just as everyone hoped it would be-spirited and successful!
