Homecoming Great Success Homecoming this year was shortened from a full week to three days because of the teachers conventions, but this did not dim our spirit or success. The week began with the coronation Monday night of Queen Diane Moats and King Chuck Lamb. Following on Tuesday was the Hay ride and on Wednesday, the triumph of the South Football team over Southwest 12 to 6. The Homecoming week came to a close with the dance Wednesday night, to the music of Woodrose. Other activities during the week were sales of Li 11 Orbit donuts, cotton candy, caramel apples, buttons, balloon tickets, garters and pennants by the various classes and organizations. All in all, this years Homecoming was just as everyone hoped it would be-spirited and successful! Media Plays Major Role In Lives Of South Students What does the average South student do in his spare time? Chances are the Mass Media plays a major role in his life. Most students probably spend several hours each week watching TV, listening to records, at the movies, or reading a good book. In television, perhaps the most popular of the Mass Media , 1975-76 saw the rise of numerous detective-police shows and situation comedies, many of which collapsed after a few episodes. Some of the popular ones, at least among South students, were Happy Days , Welcome Back Kotter , Starsky and Hutch , and the soap opera spoof, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman . In books, the big thing seemed to be murder and mayhem. Among the bestsellers at South were The Family , Helter Skelter , and of course Jaws . One of the most expensive hobbies of South students, and high school age students all over the country, is record collecting. In 1975 and 1976 some of the big recording artists were The Stones , Led Zep , Chicago , Elton John , Olivia Newton John , and John Denver . First released in 1975, the biggest box office hit of movie history continued to play into 1976. This of course was Jaws , the big fish movie that set records in earnings that many said will never be broken. Keeping up to pace at South High, guys and girls are once again breaking usual traditions. Elective courses once taken for granted as being strictly for a certain sex, have now become co-ed. Girls are learning to make tables, grandfather clocks, and cedar chests in wood, while guys are learning to bake cookies, plan meals and wash dishes. Mastering the basics of auto mechanics is, for girls, the same as guys learning how to sew their own clothes. Following the national trend, guys and girls are both learning to become more independent! Feature—15 1. Mike Holmes and Joanne Brennan in their roles as John Human and Barbara Allen. 2. For eight intensive weeks the cast of 25 partook in strenuous rehearsals and did their best to entertain approximately 1,000 people who attended the three performances. The play itself was an Appalachian legend telling the story of a witch boy and a human girl who fell in love, and the conflicts that arose. The lead roles of John Human and Barbara Allen were portrayed by Mike Holmes and Joanne Brennan. The title song, The Ballad of Barbara Allen , was composed by former South student Bruce Bednarchuk, and sung by Joanne Brennan. It was one of the many special additions to the play. Other special effects were mountain fog, thunder and lightning, and flying witches. All in all the play was a big success , said Terry Hanson, director. Mr. Hanson was assisted by student teacher Janice Maas. Fall Drama—17 Sadie A South Tradition As the busses unloaded, 83 couples stepped out and began their Sadie Hawkins night with a tour of Malkerson's Ranch, a change from past years. When they arrived at the door, they were greeted by the chaperones, who checked tickets and hustled everyone into the unheated barn. While the couples waited for the caller, they ate, flashed pictures, got married , and did a lot of talking. What's he talking about? was the reaction during the first 20 minutes after the caller arrived. As the confusion ended, and couples began to catch on, the barn was fil-led with clapping, hollering and foot stomping. Despite complications, the Senior Class, once more , made an exciting evening out of the traditional Sadie Hawkins! L Cindy Llndgren and Mike Timmer pose for their Wedding pictures. 2. Students had the choice of remaining at South or going out on one of the many excursions away from the school. Some of the choices were skiing, snow tubing, ice skating, rollerskating, ice fishing, bowling, stick hockey, ping pong, movies, and open gym. All in all, the day was regarded as successful by the 600 student participants. 1. Mike Fong tries for a spare at Stardust Lanes. 2. The coronation Monday night, February 9th, of Nancy Johnson and Steve Moe started off an event filled Sno-Daze week. Queen Nancy and King Steve, with the rest of the Royalty, reigned over a victorious hockey game against Rosemount, and watched with South, as the Tigers dribbled past Henry and Roosevelt, outscor-ing them both. Many activities were planned for the week, but because of the unseasonal high 40's temperatures, which melted the snow, most had to be cancelled. The biggest event of the week took place on Wednesday, with well over half of the school participating in Wintrim activities. Sno-tubing, bowling, ice fishing, movies, skiing, and roller skating were some of the activities enjoyed by students and faculty alike. The snowless Sno-Daze week melted into memories as a very successful Sno-Daze dance, featuring Upton, drew to a close Friday night SNO-DAZE ROYALTY: Rick Goodsell and Dottie Taplin, Junior attendants, Gary Benjamin, Alice Berg, Randy Denardo, Charisse Jones, Nancy Johnson, Queen, Steve Moe, King, Renee Salas, Wally Nelson, Chris Hall, Jeff Flavin, Elaine Jensen and John Gonzalez, Sophomore attendants. -Sno-Daze 1. Sno-Daze—21 Music Programs Popular With South Students Under the direction of John Kantar and Terry Hanson, the bands and choirs offered a variety of musical performances throughout the year. These included everything from concerts at school and churches to the pep band playing at sports events. Concert Choir, Mixed Choir and Concert Band were just some of the different groups in which the student body could participate. The South Singers performing at the new Government Center and the Jazz Band per- forming with a Jazz Ensemble at the University, were just two of the highlights of this year. The spring musical was South Pacific. Terry Hanson directed the acting and vocal portions, while John Kantar directed the pit orchestra. Electives Provide Courses For Every Interest Although South has some shortcomings, one of its strongest points has been the wide variety of elective classes available to all students. These courses allowed students to round out their programs with classes related to their own particular interests and desires. Students chose courses in Art, Industrial Education, Home Economics, Business and Distributive Education, Drivers Training, Music, Science, Languages and Math. Also available to South Students were the 2 hour Secondary Center Vocational courses for training in occupational areas. Many students were able to obtain jobs right out of High School because of these courses. By choosing electives wisely, a student was able to gain in-depth training in an area of special interest, or take different courses to try and find himself . Electives—29 Required Courses Provide Basic Training For South Students Providing a backbone for the educational experience, were the required courses taken by South students. These courses, and the amount needed, were prescribed by State Law and had to be fulfilled for graduation from high school. The required courses and credits needed for graduation were Eng-lish-9, Social Studies-6, Modern Problems-3, Gym-2, Health-1 and Math or Science-3. Students not receiving credit in these courses were required to retake them, or an equivalent, before a diploma could be issued. 30—Required Classes L A 1. Required Classes—31 32—Student Government School Leaders Help Make Plans For Student Body As always, student government provided a variety of ways in which to become involved. Their activities had influence over the entire student body at South. The Student Council took charge of Homecoming and Snow-Daze activities. Many student committees helped to make both events a success. Working directly with Mr. Northwick was the Principals Advisory Board, whose duty was to discuss and act on major items of con- cern in the school. Some of these were the credit—no credit grading system, tally procedures, class offerings, and the lunchroom situation. The three classes, under the leadership of their officers, planned a variety of activities to promote school spirit, class unity and build a stronger treasury. Senior class officers also organized such events as Sadie Hawkins, the Prom, the Senior Banquet, Picnic and Graduation Activities. 1. Honor Society Members Receive National Recognition Last spring 37 juniors were admitted into the National Honor Society at an induction ceremony that took place at Viking Village. The students accepted into the Society had maintained a 3.5 grade point average through the second trimester of their junior year, and had excelled in leadership, character and service to South High. Jeff Schneibel, Joe White, Karl Jorgenson, Patty Nelson, and Brian Evans were the members of the Honor Society who recieved recognition throught the National Merit Scholarship program. As a community service project, they delivered a Holiday food basket to the House of Charity. Members of the Honor Society served as ushers at Commencement last year, and Society members have also acted as guides to people visiting South. Plans are also being made for members to become exchange students with another Minnesota high school, and a final project to end the year. There is a side to South that most ot us rarely think of. Community Education. Community Education started at South four years ago and it has been growing steadily ever since. There are programs for eve one, young and old, graduates and non-graduates, ranging from car tuning to cake baking to massage For people born in other lands there is an English as a Second Language program, and an adult basic education curriculum for adults that never finished high school Learning is a life-long process, and the South High Community School is the place to go for further education. 1. In these programs the student attends school classes in the morning and goes out in the business world to gain supervised job training in the afternoon. One or two credits per trimester are given for satisfactory completion of the job training. Training stations were located through the joint efforts of the student and the coordinator. Each student worked at least 15 hours but not more than 33 hours a week. Employers were expected to pay the going rate for that particular job. There were approximately 120 students receiving credit for on-the-job training at South High. They worked at%jobs such as selling, cashering, stock, waitressing, retailing, auto mechanics, custodial, food service, medical assistant, welding, nursing and machine shop. The student learned about his chosen occupation through first-hand experience rather than through textbooks alone. Work Program—37 Aetien kkk kkkklrkkkkkkk 1. Val Hoehn—Swimming 2. Tigers Take Homecoming Although the 1975 Varsity Football team had a 1-7 record this season, they felt that their one win, more than made up for the other losses. With only a two day practice, the team played a magnificent game and beat Southwest 12-6, for our Homecoming. This was our first Homecoming victory in four years. Throughout the season the team made expert stands against other top Minneapolis teams. Examples of this were the games against Central (0-14) and Roosevelt (14-27), who eventually went on to take top ranks in the City Conference. Coach Don Sovell remarked that the team played better than the scores indicated as evidenced by the 0-0 halftime score against Central. He also felt that the lack of experience was a contributing factor to the season's record. Juniors made up the majority of this years team and many of them will be returning next fall, some to fill starting positions left by the 12 graduating Seniors. 1975 SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL TEAM; BOTTOM ROW: Matt Ocel, Clayton Hanson, Steve Westby, Bill Woznak, Alex Nakamoto, Mark Howard Steve Rogers, Nate Nygren and Steve McGregor. Cross Country 4th In City The 19 75 Cross Country team started the season with 25 runners and finished with 15, who placed fourth in the city. The team started practice in July and kept running until the cold winter months set in. Ed Alvarez and Val Johnson were appointed Co-Captains by Coach Kaari. Cross Country is a sport of hard work which takes self-pride, determination and motivation to run 10 to 15 miles a day. Ed Alvarez, a senior, took 2nd place in the City Meet, which is the best a South runner has ever done. Ed's best time was 15:49. Ed's brother, Melvin, a sophomore, placed 6th at the City Meet, and is the fastest sophomore in the city. The team graduates three seniors, but Coach Kaari believes that the remaining members have good potential and the team should be tough in 1976. Cross Country—43 South Second In City With 12-4 Record The 15-lb Varsity Basketball Team ended their season in second place in the city, the strongest finish since 1963. The three top players of the team were seniors Brett Anderson, leading rebounder, Jeff Flavin, playmaker, and junior Willie Flowers, leading scorer in Minneapolis. These three were the nucleus of a strong starting lineup. The team had a very good conference season, with a record of 12-4 going into regions. Losing only to 1 rated Central, North, and West, South was seated very high in the region playoffs. According to Captain Jeff Flavin, the team had the potential to be the best in the state, but did not play to their fullest ability. With the majority of the varsity team returning, and a strong sophomore squad to join them, next year's team should be very good. VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM: FRONT ROW: Brett Anderson and Jeff Flavin. Captain Randy Denardo showed much leadership through the year both at practices and meets. After his 4th year of coaching wrestling, Wayne Kopesky felt that this had to be the most enjoyable and exciting year for him. Due to dedication and hard conditioning at practices, individual victories against tough competitors were many, and helped boost the team morale. Dave Haines, assistant coach, added much to the perfection of the team and aided in building up strong members who made this a good year for the Varsity squad. JR. Led by co-cap-tains Ken Janey and Matt Benson, they defeated Willmar, 6-2, in their first region game, and moved on to upset Benilde, 5-4, in sudden death overtime. A loss to l rated Southwest in the third region game ended the season. Highlights of the year were a double hat trick, six goals, scored by Tim Elms against Central, and wins against our rival Roosevelt, 5-3, North, 8-1 and 10-1, Central, 11-2, and Edison, 6-3. The outlook for 1977 appears very good with only four seniors graduating. Ron Nelson, oalie, improved greatly during this season, as id many other members of the team, and should be very strong next year. With an accurate, high scoring offensive line, consisting of Tim Elms, Sam Ocel, and Pat Connolly, and a tough defense, next year's season will be something to look forwara to. Coached by Rick Aim, who was assisted by Bruce Melander, the team ended the season with a conference record of 5-6-1. The South High varsity swim team led by Jay Crothers and Mike Bronston, battled their way to a .500 season. With Jay Crothers, South had one of the top swimmers in Minneapolis. Jay ended his high school career holding 5 out of 9 of the individual swimming records at South. His school records were in the 100, 200 and 500 yard freestyle, the 100 yard butterfly and the 200 yard individual medlay. The sophomore swim team went undefeated in the city conference, and swam St. Paul Washington in the Twin City meet. Prospects for the next two years are good, in as much as the Tankers loose only 3 swimmers from their 27 man squad. South qualified 13 swimmers for district 17 competition. They were Jay Crothers, Mike Bronston, Tom Polak, Doug Troupe, Mike Vita, Jesse Anderson, Marshall Bronston, John Payette, Steve Westby, Clayt Hansen, Bill Woznak, Andy Schweizer and John Offerdahl. 50—Boys Swimming 1. Two of the season highlights were when the team beat Roosevelt in the first meet and when Joel Swanson finished in forth place in the final meet. This was the first year for girls Slalom racing. The girls team consisted of Erika Rudquist, Tammy Cowan and Elaine Jensen. The Cross Country Ski teams were the only teams at South where the guys and girls practiced together. Although they didn't compete against each other they did race at the same place (Theodore Wirth Golf Course) on the same days. The boys Cross Country team was coached by Steve Lindquist and was made up of 6 Seniors and 1 Sophomore. The Ski team also had one jumper, Pat Shea. The girls Cross Country team was coached by Don Bergstrom. Although the girls team was one of the smallest in the city with only 3 members, they did defeat Marshal I -U, Central, North and Henry. All sophomore skiers, both male and female, looked very strong this year. This makes next years teams look very promising. The first doubles team of Diane Moats, Captain, and Joanne Black won 5 of their 8 matches. Linda Mateer and Penny Wood played second doubles. Skill And Numbers Grow In Girls Volleyball This year's Volleyball Team was a young one. There were 27 players, of which only 6 were seniors. This is the largest squad I've ever had, said coach Lambert! The first few varsity games went into 3 matches, but South lost them all. Although South's varsity squad won but 2 of 8 games played, the girls strengthened tremendously. One of the highlights of the season was finishing 4th place in the Spring Lake Park Invitational, of which South was the only Minneapolis team. Unfortunately, one senior varsity member, Alice Berg, did not get to finish the season due to a knee injury. This year's team wanted to stress one thing, togetherness! Without this feeling, you can't have a team. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM: BOTTOM ROW: Mary Larson, Lynnda Carlson, Theresa Schnoibcl, Angle Yanisch, Sue Manoleff, Theresa Syde, Channon Jones. Although none of the members of South's swim team qualified, they tried hard. In spite of practice six days a week and coaching from Nancy Johnson and Bonnie Ro-senfield, the team ended the season with a 0-8 record. The high point of the season was the Metro-Sectional Meet, where South placed 8th, beatinq Marshall-U by 3 points. Individually, the team did well. Kristi King took first place in all the meets in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Divers, Val Hoehn and Debbie Rosenow placed in the consolation heats at the City and Metro-Sectional Meets. The girls basketball team finished the season with a winning 8-6 record. The Jr. Varsity record was 3-8. Kirk Nelson, coach, thought the squad did a fine job in finishing in the top half of the conference. The prospects for next year look good with many Jr. Varsity members moving up to make a strong squad. Junior Pam Finch made the All-City team for the second year in a row. 1. The high point was in the meet against Central when Becky Johnson gave an outstanding performance on the unevens, which helped to win the meet by two points. On the team this year were 5 South girls, with the remaining team members coming from the junior highs. The gymnastics competition has been getting tougher every year, but South is improving fast. The team competes in Four Areas: floor, exercise, vaulting, uneven bars, and balance beam. Participants are judged on difficulty, amplitude, extension, composition, originality, and general impression of the performance. The top 3 scores from each event add together to get the final team score. 1. Tina Skripnik positions horself for her performance on the uneven bars. 2. A Real Kicky Group Who was it that sold orange and black garters at homecoming, that entertained us with dances at pepfests, and halftimes, and practiced many long hours each week? The South High Tigerettes! This year's squad of 12 girls (over half of who were new to the squad) could be seen practicing routines almost everyday during 6th hour and early in the morning. Eight girls were able to attend a danceline camp at Eau Clair, Wisconsin this year, where they learned new routines and had a taste of dorm life and food. Everyone appreciated the hard work of the Tigerettes and the school is looking forward to an excellent squad next year, with many returning members. 1975 TIGERETTES: BOTTOM ROW: Barb Economon and Barb Carroll, v-t«plains ROvu _ Kris Nelson. Cheerleaders, Note Rise In South's Spirit The long hours of practice, beginning in June, changed from hard work to fun when school began. As the football season got under way the squad noticed much more spirit than there had been in the past. Advised by Carlotta Smith, the squad, consisting of 12 seniors and 4 juniors, had a very unique difference from other Mpls. schools. That difference was Chuck Lamb, one of the Tiger mascots. At times it was hard for Chuck to be the only guy, but they all agreed it would not have been as good a squad or as much fun without him. Chuck, along with Diane Moats, the other Tiger, was a major part of keeping up South's spirit. Led by Co-Captains Robin Hanson and Charisse Jones, the squad held pepfests and sold candles to raise money. They spent many hours together practicing, helping each other and sharing the tension, the excitement, the cold, and sometimes the letdown of the games. This year will be remembered always! The primary source of staff members was provided by a journalism class offered first trimester by newspaper advisor. Crystal Loudenback. By putting in long hours the staff members were able to give the student body necessary information, leadership, and comprehensive coverage of the people and happenings at South High. 66 — Southerner Staff Small Staff Produces Big Tiger Yearbook Busy was the word for the 1976 TIGER staff. Although small, the staff did it's best to reflect the activities of the school year by working after school and by occasionally putting in extra hours in the evening. This year's book pictures more South students than last year, said Roger Wold, Advisor, and if more students would have gotten involved, the book would have been even better. Created by Senior Karl Jorgenson, the paper expanded rapidly into 1976 under the direction of producers Randy Norman and Karl Jorgenson. The Otherner was created to provide a means of expression for the entire student body, a job the producers felt the Southerner did poorly. They also thought that the Otherner could open up for other kinds of literature, especially creative writing. Everyone who became involved came away with a valuable experience and a good time, but they were all Seniors, so the future of the Otherner is doubtful. Randy and Karl both feel strongly that the Otherner should continue, hopefully in the image they have created. 1. Some of these people such as teachers and counslers, work directly with students. Others, like teachers aides, clerks and kitchen staff are not quite as visible to South students, but nevertheless, all perform necessary duties in keeping the school running smoothly. Students have been heard to complain that they didn't get as much help as they deserved, or that the commons was a mess at lunch, or the principals were too rough on kids. In spite of such criticisms it was also true that the majority of the South Staff was more than willing to go out of their way to help students have the best year possible! 1 Jim Salwasser and Bill O'Brien protect the commons during first hour. 2. The major focus in each case is making South High a better place for students. Mr. Picotte's student exchange program with Wayzata and Mr. Larson's work with the North Central Evaluation Teams, were two programs specifically geared to bring new insights into our school.
