The faculty and staff numbered 108 this year with nine new teachers joining South in the math, science, business, home ec, music and foreign language departments. Mr. Steve Lindquist, math teacher, returned to South after a year of teaching in England. Tuesday release times were devoted to human relations training and effective use of communication skills. Co-chairmen Dave Berg and Jerome Tyler guided the staff through a series of meetings designed to facilitate communication among the staff. At the end of the first quarter, change was underway to modify the type of scheduling South has for next year. As the result of a vote taken at a council meeting, modular scheduling as it is known this year will be abandoned for a more traditional approach to learning with a six period. 55 minute class period day. Along with the scheduling change will come a new registration system for students, and more classroom construction in the open academic areas on second floor. A trimester schedule will be used instead of a quarter system. The vote was by no means unanimous, but the majority of teachers felt that learning could be better effected this way.
