Text from Pages 1 - 84 of the 1973 volume:

The Faces of South Look around the school and you’ll see that faces tell the story ... each little smile, glance and frown expressions that reflect the feelings of moments soon to be forgotten. 3 .. Tell the Story of the Year. Happy faces just completing a class project ... anxious faces waiting for that touchdown to be made thoughtful faces contemplating the next step .. involved faces participating in field trips and extra-curricular plays. Students’ faces around South taking a part in varied activities that await involvement. They say that the whole school depends on you. You. What a small word for such a big job! Maybe that’s it—your being a part of things here. 4 5 6 Brian, Jean Reign Over 1972 Homecoming Behind the scenes at homecoming this year was the Student Homecoming Committee, headed by Audrey laquinto and Bob Hayhurst. seniors. The committee helped to plan and coordinate the week’s events, which included the night coronation. The coronation program featured music, dance numbers, and victory skits. Last year's king and queen were present to crown the new royalty. Jean Loch and Brian King. Other activities of the week included Rose Day. a hayride. Blu-Tri breakfast. Inter-class Olympics, and the game followed by the dance featuring Sterling. Financially, this year's homecoming was a big success according to Miss Mary Michael Connolly and Mr. Roger Wold, faculty coordinators. One reason for the success was that attendance was up at almost every activity from past years. This reflects the amount of participation and involvement by students. What do some South High students think about the homecoming activities? “The jocks ran it all”... “Too many candidates took it for granted that they would be chosen . The dance was really far out ... Pretty good, because I was in it ... “I didn't participate When is it? ... It got people involved from all classes ... The candidates were pretty good” ... It was better than the last two years ... What can I say—we lost .. This was Homecoming 1972 Charleston dancers entertain at the coronation program. The title fits Brian King, but not the crown. Signs illustrate student hopes through the exciting but unsuccessful game. Queen Jean and King Brian as they begin their reign over homecoming week. Sports Dominate Sno-Daze Celebration Attendants Mike Milbrath and Paula Melquist enjoy themselves at the fnday night Sno-Daze dance Sno-Daze. South's annual winter festival week, started on Monday. January 28. with a night coronation and talent show. The talent show, sponsored by the sophomore class, was a first this year and was quite successful, according to Maythee Jensen, sophomore vice-president. At the coronation show. Bruce Lawson and Sue Anderson were chosen as king and queen. The other members of the royal court were Lisa Paulson. Naomi Williamson. Paula Melquist, Mike Milbrath. Dave Olsen, and Dave McGregor. The week's activities were coordinated by faculty advisers Mr. Edward Villwock and Mr. Pat Glynn. The active sophomore class sold candy canes: the choir. Hostess baked goods, while German Club sold Gingerbread Men. It was a good time for those not on a diet. Sports events dominated the week, interspersed with a sleigh ride and the Friday night dance. Sno-Daze buttons were sold and this year's slogan. There's No Business Like Sno Business' was strangely inappropriate—because of the lack of snow, the annual snow sculpture contest was canceled. Sno-Daze king and queen. Bruce Lawson and Sue Anderson. BELOW, were crowned at the Monday night program that started the week of festivities. The faculty and staff numbered 108 this year with nine new teachers joining South in the math, science, business, home ec, music and foreign language departments. Mr. Steve Lindquist, math teacher, returned to South after a year of teaching in England. Tuesday release times were devoted to human relations training and effective use of communication skills. Co-chairmen Dave Berg and Jerome Tyler guided the staff through a series of meetings designed to facilitate communication among the staff. At the end of the first quarter, change was underway to modify the type of scheduling South has for next year. As the result of a vote taken at a council meeting, modular scheduling as it is known this year will be abandoned for a more traditional approach to learning with a six period. 55 minute class period day. Along with the scheduling change will come a new registration system for students, and more classroom construction in the open academic areas on second floor. A trimester schedule will be used instead of a quarter system. The vote was by no means unanimous, but the majority of teachers felt that learning could be better effected this way. They sponsored a talent show during Sno-Daze. which was very successful, according to Debbie Franzen. sophomore class President. They sold candy canes at Christmas and candy hearts for Valentine's Day to earn money for the class treasury, the candy canes being the best sale of the year. All girl officers were elected by the class in October following a campaign with posters, buttons, and speeches by the candidates. The results were; Debbie Franzen. President; Maythee Jensen. This year instead of just having a cabinet, the juniors decided to elect officers to rule their class. The election was a close one. numerous signs dotted the auditorium wall in the commons during election time. Out of the elections emerged Chuck Vifquain as president. Cheryl Christianson vice president and Nancy Nelson as secretary-treasurer. The closeness of the contest proved the spirit of the class of 74. The juniors promptly sponsored a sucker sale, a skating party over the holidays and the wrestling match during Sno-Daze week, with more activities planned for the year. The juniors are now the middlemen, looking back at last year's sophomore year with some regrets and fond memories, and looking ahead to next year's senior year with anxiousnessand anticipation. This year's graduating class will be on of the last to know what it was like to participate in modular scheduling at South. When they came to South as Sophomores, it was a new school and the Juniors and Seniors were just as lost as they were. They had a five day week in their Sophomore year, then in their Junior year a more complicated six day cycle was introduced. providing more elective classes to choose from. In their final year. South returned to the five day. 26 mod schedule, and the class of 1973 provided the leadership factor in the school. The class sponsored the sleigh ride during Sno-Daze and Senior students coordinated all the senior year events, such as the prom, banquet, picnic, and the graduation exercises. When You Run C.C., You Run It Alone. Co-captain Mike Hochn runs on his way to a fourth place finish in the city meet. This qualified him for the regional cross country meet. 54 After three long, grueling miles. co captain Dave Berg shows strain of being in a ”by yourself sport. Running cross country is nothing at all like playing football or baseball. In those sports you run a 10 yd. sprint and rest or swing a bat run 30 yds. and rest. But when you run cross country you run 3 miles for a little over a quarter of an hour with no rest at all. The running is all smoothed, all controlled. You set up a stride that suits you best and you use that until the last 300 yds. Then you start pushing it. so when the last 50 yds. come you can't feel your legs and arms because your driving so hard to get a better time or to pass another runner. In very few sports can you experience the total exhaustion you feel after running a distance race. It's your own thing all the way. The team had a disappointing season, finishing 7th in the city meet, with an overall record of 6-3-1. 28 guys started the season and only 11 finished. The team was led by captains Mike Hoehn and Dave Berg. Hoehn was the top runner on the team. He had a 4th place in the city meet, finishing about 15 seconds behind the first place winner. Co-captain Dave Berg was next, followed by Phil Kadlec. Steve Scott and Rick Melander. Hours and hours of taxing workouts all for one reason —to play well and to win. South had a tough defensive team and a good scoring offensive team this season. The sophomore team posted an impressive 4-3 record. At the preview, the varsity squad won its quarter 3-0 over Henry. The first conference game was with Vocational. South won 20-14. In the next weeks South played Central. North and Edison. The team lost two and tied one. The South-North game was a well played defensive game that ended 0-0. Homecoming brought the game with Washburn. current state football champions. South scored a touchdown on the game's first drive, but lost 28-6. At the Highland Park tournament they came in a close second, losing to St. Paul Central in the championship match 24-22. and also coming in second at the Rush-ford Invitational tournament. Seniors Jim Harding. Bob Swanson and Rod Brauman served as tri-captains and the team is looking ahead to next year, when they are expected to give a strong showing. But nothing seemed to go right for the South High basketball team this year. The season started out strong with a good showing in the preview, plus a win over Minnehaha Academy. But. in the games following, over anxiousness caused little mistakes and the team just couldn't seem to pick up a win. Towards the end of the year, however, the team got the lead in most of the games but could not hold on for a victory. The hockey team was 6-4 and the gymnastics team was 5-1. second only to Henry. This was the hockey team’s first complete season under the new coach. Rick Aim. and they improved quite a bit over last year’s 5-3-2 record. They played a strong non-conference schedule and did quite well. They won their first game in the districts, beating Central 8-0 on their march to the state tournament. In the next game a surprise upset was pulled by Washburn in a 5-1 defeat. Two team members. Dan Nelson and Mike Erickson were named to the Minneapolis All-City team, for their outstanding hockey performance. Next year’s team hopefully will be even better than this year, because there will be many returning players. Tumblers Ron Rhoden and Mike Foley were among the five gymnasts from South to go to the State meet. Gymnast Keith Svoboda does an armstand on the even parallel bars. The gymnastics team, in its third year of existence, equalled its record of last year, even though two of its best men graduated. They worked out every day each week before, after and during school to keep in shape for the meet usually held on Wednesdays. On those days South High students had a chance to see an exciting winning team perform free, as no admission was charged. Sports Continue to Grow in Popularity Girl’s sports this year played an important role in the extra-curricular time of the girls who participated in them. The swimming team, going through final organization this year, combined with Central to compete at practice meets. They did not. however, oo too well. The girls are anticipating next year, when South will have a team of it’s own. The volleyball team this year did not have a good season. The team was comprised of mostly Sophomores and Juniors. Having played together as a unit this year, they should have a strong showing next year. The gymnastics team this year has had many close meets with Washburn and Roosevelt, but came out on the short end of the score. They did, however, beat Edison. Henry, and Central. The badminton team with fourteen girls, improved their ratings over last year’s with a 5-5 record. In all. about forty girls went out for the various sports, making girl’s sports a major part of athletics at South. TOP: Renae VanDerveer straddle vaults over the horse at a gymnastics meet. With their membership having nearly doubled over the last several years due to the increase in the number of sports at South, the 1972-73 Varsity Cheerleaders began meeting in July to start developing new cheers and routines for the fall sports season. Following the mandatory tryouts in the Spring, the girls were notified of their acceptance and elected Donna Matthew and Renae VanDerveer as co-captains for the year. Carwashes were held and candy sold to raise money for the five different uniforms each girl wears. The summer practices began with three hours a day. five days a week, and culminated in nearly six hours a day. just before their debut at the September Football Preview. New cheers were created, each being named after its originator. Going out onto the ice wearing skates to cheer at hockey games was a first this year, as were the two Tigers, introduced to keep the line filled in the event of an absence. The 72-73 Tigerettes also began the season at the Football Preview, following weeks of rehearsals. Under Captain Diane Barna. they joined the Cheerleaders to welcome students on Orientation Day and performed to “Promenade at the Homecoming Coronation program. The Tigerettes danced at all home games and were seen at the Indoor Marching Band Concert and Fashion Show. Five different costumes in which to perform were made by each of the girls, and a repitoire of twenty or thirty different dances was developed. In April, the Tigerettes auditioned to march in this years Aquatennial Parade. 70 LEFT, 1972-73 Tigerettes: Naomi Williamson. Lisa Paulson. Peggy Grose. DeeDee Jones, Brenda Guten-kauf. Vicki Rodi. Mr. John Kantar. a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota, began teaching at South in autumn and quickly built up the band’s repertoire to include many new popular songs. Strengthening the band’s overall marching ability was another primary task. Early morning marching practices held throughout football season prepared the band for their many halftime programs. New cadences, steps, formations and routines gave the Marching Band a spirited new look. For perhaps the first time in years, the band stayed in the stands for the duration of the games, providing music whenever needed. On September 23. they combined with 47 other high school bands from around the state to perform at the U. during the game between Minnesota and Colorado, with Dr. Frank Bencriscutto conducting. Pep-fest performances and the 1st Annual Indoor Marching Band Concert brought standing ovations at home. The band carried this spirit into the winter sports season, playing at hockey and basketball games. Many fund-raising projects were sponsored by the band this year. A spaghetti dinner. “Moonlight and Meatsauce . was held in March, with the band and other vocal and instrumental groups providing entertainment, and. according to Mr. Kantar. was fantastically successful . Proceeds went to financing their trips to Chicago in the spring. One of these was a spring musical. You're A Good Man. Charlie Brown , sponsored and performed by choir members. The choir also cosponsored. with the band, a spaghetti dinner. Moonlight and Meatsauce . Light bulbs and chocolate candy were sold during the year to provide funds for a spring trip to Chicago with the band. This year's annual Winter and Spring concerts were very successful, with a nice blend of pop and traditional pieces. At the Winter concert tradition was kept by the annual singing of Mendel's Hallelujah Chorus. All alumni choir members were invited up to the stage to join in with the combined choirs in singing this beautiful hymn. ABOVE. After tryouts in September, the cast of fourteen began rehearsals which continued until the November 9 and 10 performances. SJr OECA S 79 The faces are gone but friends will be remembered. The chairs are stacked in the commons; another year has come and gone. The juniors and sophomores will be back all too soon to carry on the activities, traditions and learning. But for the seniors, it’s only a memory now. We hope this book will be part of these memories. They say good things come in small packages. Maybe so. A small package is better than no package at all. Not enough sales, not enough staff members, and not enough finances in general did not permit us to do all we would have liked. Club membership and participation in extra curricular activities has dwindled in some areas. Some traditional activities that South has always had were nearly cancelled due to a lack of interest on the part of students. Students were not willing in most cases to take part, to get involved, or to dedicate their time and efforts to projects. It all adds up to one word—apathy. Change will be initiated next year and with these changes perhaps will come a renaissance. We heard much talk this year about jocks and freaks and those in-between. Too bad we couldn’t all have been just students. Terry Fabian LoisGerth Mary Gibney Mike Gramling 80
