When we moved from the Old South to our New South, we brought with us those treasured and cherished memories: our school spirit, friendships, loyalties to classmates and South High. Today, we have a new school building which abounds with so many new sources for learning, new equipment for our use. So evident to us and to all our visitors arc these highlights in our New South: a fantastic auditorium, an excellent gym, large resource centers, our beautiful library, the specialized shops, and carpeted floors. To increase a spirit of awareness, we must appreciate what we have, use it in the best ways possible and preserve it for future students. Hopefully, in our New South we arc building a new background for much more to be remembered. Yes. we have a new building, a New South, which can be enriched by yesterday’s famed loyalty and school spirit. ’71 Tiger Staff TABLE OF CONTENTS ACTIVITIES 5 ORGANIZATIONS 23 SPORTS 43 STUDENT LIFE 67 FACULTY 75 UNDERCLASSMEN 87 SENIORS 105 STUDENTS, ACTUALLY DO WORK IN THE LIBRARY! In honor of Lcs Barnard, a new football field was dedicated in his name on Friday. October 9, 1970. As a coach. Barnard devoted 30 years of service to the football teams of South High. In spite of the rain and bad weather the crowd filled the stands. People were invited from all over the United States to attend the presentation of the field, the Homecoming football game, a banquet limited to 500 people and a short program presenting Lcs Barnard an award in gratitude of his service. 1936 Football Award Presented to Lcs Barnard. NOT A MAGICIAN.” This year’s all school play. “The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch, was a first in many ways. Not only was it the first production in the New South High School Auditorium, but it was also one of the first performances of this play in the Midwest. Another first was the “thrust” stage, which brought much of the action closer to the audience. In several scenes the entire auditorium was used as a stage. The main actors were Mike Green as Sneaky Fitch, and Demetria Jones as Maroon. Other prominent townspeople were portrayed by Ed Taylor, Peter Ozolins, Roy Johnson. Scott Olson, and Joe Moses. Felix Curtis, Michael Grumbling, Sherry Gross, Linda Johnson, Kim Lees, Pat Kubera, Vincent Roberts, and Loretta Young. This full length comedy was all about an interfering mother-in-law who goes to the North Woods in Minnesota to more or less set her only daughter and her new son-in-law off on the right fool. Many funny and ridiculous things happen during the course of the play, and all of the events work together to make the play great. All of the actors in this play tired their hardest to make this first trial performance a good one. “Paddle Your Own Canoe” was directed by two South High School student teachers who were Maura Ludden and Kathy Ringhofer. The play was performed 3 times, December 16, 17, and 18. LEFT TO RIGHT: Becky Eckman, Marty Duda, Diane Barna, Mark Angell. A full week of winter activities was planned; however they were cancelled due to a number of unusual events which interrupted our sleigh ride, skating party, and our annual Sno-Dazc dance. SWEDISH CLUB CHOIR Accapclla Choir is the largest choir at South. These voices have echoed through the hallowed halls of many respectable structures, one, being the Board of Education. This organization presented many programs at South during the year, and competed in the Minneapolis High School Choir Contest. For a special happening, the choir planned a weekend trip to Chicago. South Singers, a select group from the choir, have added something to the unimpressionable lives of many. Besides taking part in various programs at school, this group represented South at Roscdale Shopping Center and many other outside places. Mixed Choir is a new addition to South’s curriculum this year. This group is made up of forty-three studious vocalists who added much to our concerts. ACAPPELLA CHOIR MIXED CHOIR ROW I: Gcri W'ald. It started the year off by playing at the Dedication of the New South. The football season was next in the chain of events, when the Concert Band joined the Tiger Band to march at half-time. The band also hosted the First Annual Band Festival between South’s Band and Roosevelt’s Band. Each band played a short concert and then combined to play together. It was very successful. In the spring, the Band took a Concert trip to Chicago, where they played at a Chicago High School. Some other highlights of the year include the District Contest, the “Pops” Concert, and the Spring Concert. The Tiger Band has the primary purpose of adding spirit and life at athletic events. Since this was the first year for the Tiger Band, it was small in size, but mighty in sound. The Tiger Band was combined with concert band for many events throughout the year, such as the Band Festival, football games, the trip to Chicago, and the Concerts. The Stage Band had a full year of jazz! This band played all kinds of jazz for many events, both at school and around the city. Some of the highlights were the Lcs Barnard Field Dedication Banquet, the Old Guard Club at the Y.M.C.A, the jazz conoerts and the “Pops” Concert. The String Ensemble is the beginning of the South High Symphony Orchestra. It made some public performances at such places as the Old Soldiers’ Home. Next year brass, woodwinds, percussion, and more strings will be added to start the orchestra growing. CONCERT BAND ROW I; Becky Eckman. Sandy Widholm. Dave Stierna. Lee Youngman. Becky Johnson. Dressed in orange and black sweaters, proudly signifying their school, the South High Varsity cheerleaders showed their spirit with their lively jumps and enthusiastic cheers at football, hockey, and basketball games. In order for perfection in their cheers, they practiced summer mornings and school mornings. Four of the cheerleaders went to an l.C.F. clinic. International Cheerlcading Foundation where they got ideas for new cheers which they made up and used this year. Much thanks goes to the cheerleaders for their fine job of boosting school spirit, and also a thanks to the sophomore cheerleaders for their support at sophomore games and wrestling matches. Countless hours of practice during the summer and also before and after school, made it possible for these girls to work out new routines to help promote school spirit and to add pep to the athletic activities throughout the school year. Fifteen girls made up the very talented group. These girls made three different outfits in which to perform. RUNS WILD ... 9-2 RECORD The 1971 Cross Country team ran to its best record in ten years at South with an overall 9-2 regular season and an impressive 4th place in the City Meet. With hard work and determination, the team kept its winning form, even though there were injuries to its top runners. Greg Zipoy was hampered with shin splints through the entire season, along with injuries to Bob Gilmore and Darryl Beilin, but pride kept them running in the meets. Mr. Kaari can look forward to more winning years with next year’s Captain Mike Murry, sophomore Mike Berg, and a group of underclassmen who worked out with the varsity team. South’s individual, outstanding runner would undoubtedly be Senior Greg Zipoy, who holds the school record. Top conditioning, a potent, precision offense and a limited number of injuries made this year’s squad the best in recent years. Unusual balance in the City Conference made every game a close, ficroe-fought contest. Three games were decided by a total of five points. After trailing 6-0 at halftime, South pulled out an 8-6 victory over Vocational in our Homecoming game, that marked the dedication of Les Barnard Field. It was fell by many that the Tiger’s best effort of the year was the 20-7 victory over third place West in their Homecoming game. Thirteen tough, dedicated Seniors led the squad, many of them playing both offense and defense. Captains John Larson and Andy Semelis displayed their leadership and held team spirit high all year. The season can be summed up in one phrase: “so close ... and yet so far.” 46 YET SO FAR EJ IlJ u A FAMILIAR SIGHT: CONCERNED COACHES. PUNTER GARY SVIDRON. SO CLOSE . . . AND CO-CAPTAIN JOHN LARSON. The grapplers had several close matches losing to North 19-22 and to city champions, Edison, 21-22. The team was rebuilding in most weights. A strong sophomore and freshmen turnout helped greatly to improve the strength of the team. Next year the grapplers can expect a good Conference stand. This years team held three all-city wrestlers; Rick Palla, Steve Schon and Paul Gonzalez. Though placing low in the District Meet, South sent two wrestlers to Regions: at 145, Mike Iversenand 165, Paul Gonzalez. Next years captains will be Rick Palla and Paul Gonzalez, they should both be able to count on a great season. To The 1971 Graduating Class I am proud of the manner in which your class accepted the responsibilities and innovations of moving from an old school to our new school. New concepts are sometimes difficult to adjust to in a changing educational system such as ours. The members of this class have proven they had the ability to make these changes. Working with this class the past three years has been a very satisfying and interesting experience for me. I hope the experiences you have had the past three years at South High School will serve you well throughout your life. Dean R. Shawbold Principal Stephen Marchuk Assistant Principal Keith R.
