THE SEV This, the Sixty-third volume (  (the Tigei, was conceived. ( on tm t. .! .i)d presented by the Nineteen Se ci under the leadership of Miss lavella Bremer. . fc? • , This edition was edited by Robert Eric Elliott. The Co-Editor was Mary Zoebisch. South High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota. TABLE OF CONTENTS ACTIVITIES 8 ORGANIZATIONS 22 SPORTS 48 FACULTY 68 UNDERCLASSMEN 78 SENIORS 90 We, the graduating class of Nineteen-Seventy, are very fortunate. We have experienced much throughout our three years at South. We have been part of a complete educational change, all the way from the reality of a new school building to a new system of scheduling. Another aspect, a more important one, has been the change in our lives. Along with those changes come contrasts — contrasts between the old and the new, between what was and what is. That's why we have chosen contrasts as the theme of this annual. It also is an excellent opportunity to give a pictorial history of South High — it shows all of the changes this school has gone through. In this yearbook we have tried to capture and record these changes and contrasts. Now we have a future to plan, so we musn't dwell entirely on the past, yet it cannot be forgotten. This South High School which has grown old, soon will be replaced. But we know that through the years it has accomplished many great things; it has affected and educated many lives. As a result there is that feeling within these worn-out halls and shattered windows that the new school will not, and cannot, possess. To us, South High is more than a school; it's more than a place to be educated. It's a place where we can meet other people, where we can find ourselves. It's a place to plan one's life, to make that life worth living. Before this school is a building of the past, it should be thanked for what it has done, for what it is, for just being South. The most appropriate way we can express our gratitude to South High is to dedicate this yearbook to the old South, and that's exactly what we've done! Tiger Staff 70 OUR PRINCIPAL DEAN R. SHAWBOLD You have had more than your share of varied activities during your three years at South. Your class is the first to graduate with three full years of modular scheduling. You all participated in the ground breaking for the long awaited new school and dedicated our new football field, which by the way will be lighted and also have an electronic scoreboard. You witnessed the laying of a cornerstone with momentos of your own choosing. Yours is the last class completing your education in the old South High School, and the first class graduating from the new South High School, presently the only comprehensive school in Minneapolis. You have had many happy experiences during this time and I expect you will remember them throughout your life. Best wishes and may all of you be successful and happy in your future endeavors. It has been a great experience for me to have had the opportunity of being associated with all of you. Sincerely, ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS KEITH R. OLSEN Mr. Marchuck has returned to South after a short leave of absence. This school year he has had the position of Assistant Principal. His guidance and friendliness were deeply appreciated by all students. His qualities as a leader were exemplified in every decision he made. Mr. Marchuck, we sincerely thank you. You can be justly proud of the 1969-70 school year. This year's senior class is the first one to have completed three years of education under our modular system. You have accepted the many challenges and responsibilities well. As you leave South, you are entering an era filled with opportunities. Best wishes to each and every one of you. STEPHEN MARCHUCK Dear Students, My first year at South has been as interesting and challenging for me as I hope that it has been for you. It has been interesting meeting and working with the faculty, staff, and students. Being the Assistant Principal for the sophomores has been interesting and fruitful. We have set our goals high and have attempted to live up to “being the best class of the Old and the New South High School . May we all have a pleasant and profitable summer. May we return to New South prepared for another interesting and challenging year. £4 5 GEORGE KNUTSON OUR COUNSELORS Junior Counselor: Mr. Hulbert Sophomore Counselor: Mr. Friedrichsen Senior Counselor: Mr. Marconett Social Worker: Miss Kinunen Counselor: Mr. McKinnie 6 IN MEMORY OF i Richard Olson Killed Aug. 8,1969 Even though times are always changing — with the result being contrasts — it seems that there is always a war being fought to scar the happiness and prosperity of mankind. Millions of lives have been lost in a number of wars, so its obvious that they are an essential part of our world. Many of us have been affected by our present war in Vietnam, through the loss of our loved ones. We dedicate this page to all the gallant young men from South High School, and throughout the nation, who have fought for a cause, for something they really believe in, to the point of sacrificing their lives. 7 m7 19 70 RUTH BOLECHOWSKI BELINDA ANDERSON ROBERT ELLIOTT THOMAS BONRUD SUZANNE W HIPKEY ROBERT LAWSON SANDRA NOLEN TERRY THOMPSON JOHN HARDEMAN WILLIAM LOYE This year's Homecoming was a very active one. During the week we had Button Day — everyone wore as many buttons as he could — Grub Day, Dress-Up Day, and Orange and Black Day. Our slogan this year. Turn the Millers to Flour With Tiger Power, was submitted by one of our more witty Juniors. The program that was presented on Friday was a takeoff on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour, with Joe Kreuger as Host. After viewing some ot the finest talent here at South, the moment we were all anxiously awaiting was upon us: the coronation of Queen Sue Whipkey and King John Hardeman. We released our tension after the coronation by yelling at the pep-fest that followed and then marching to the field for the game. Although we lost to Washburn, our dedicated players tried their hardest to Be South. Soon after the dance that evening, with music by the Sir Raleighs, Homecoming became just another one of our fond memories. Bev Lccgard Sue Whipkey nonchalantly accepts position of Homecoming Queen! OF SNO-DAZE! Our winter school days were climaxed by the traditional Sno-daze events, which seemed to be exceptionally exciting for Nineteen-Seventy. During the week of February 23 through the 27, the fun-filled events accelerated to the major one, the coronation program and ceremonies. The program, directed by Mr. Schell, opened with a dance number by our versatile Tigerettes, dressed as hoboes frolicking in a park! The Liverpool Scene, which was entered in state competition, was the next segment of the well-organized program. This scene reflected hours of practice, unlimited talent, and willingness to share talents with an appreciative audience. Then came the long-awaited coronation of Queen Becky Brennan and King Keith Hardeman. Candidates were, left to right, Mary Bonrud, Marty Duda, Janet Silbernagle, Andy Semiles, Melanie Jensen, Keith Hardeman, Joe Krugeur, Becky Brennan, Tom Doble, Joan Davis, Mark Nault, and Sue Bergeson. Cast of nine make up The Liverpool Scene. 15 I REMEMBER MAMA 1970 has been a year of growth for our drama department. Our class play this year reflected this growth. A great deal of hard work and talent went into the production of I Remember Mama. Lead roles were portrayed by Bonnie Meyer, Joe Krueger, and Georgia Wettlin. Mr. Schell, the director of the play, stated that This is the best acting job I've had from a cast. Natural talent and hard work made the play a great success. Later in the year Mr. Schell will direct the variety show, entitled Three Cheers and a Roar. With the stage of the new South, the growth of the drama department will be unlimited next year. On the moonlit night of November 26th, South High's lunchroom was filled with wall to wall fun and laughter, because of another annual Sadie Hawkins dance. Everyone who attended had to admit that he, or she, had a really great time. Students had a choice of dancing to music by the Perspectives, dunking someone in the dunking machine, square dancing, or just watching the creative outfits walk by. We'll never forget Marry-in Sam who had quite a job on his hands getting all those couples hitched by midnight, but Bill Loye performed his duties as minister quite efficiently. This year Daisy Mae and Lil' Abner were Debbie Wolfe and Kim Nutter. Soon after midnight the fun of Sadie Hawkins became another one of our great High school memories. LEFT: An example of the creative outfits! ABOVE: Mark Suendahl makes the fatal move! South's annual girl-ask-boy winter formal was appropriately held on February 14, Valentine's day. This dance is a special feature of South's Blu-Tri and Hi-Y chapters. The dance took place in the Northstar Ballroom, on the U Campus in St. Paul. This year's theme was “On the Wings of a Dove. Colors for the Swirl were purple and pink; the object was fun. The Bagdad's provided the enchanting music for the dancing couples. During intermission a group of South's more talented students sang some great songs. They were Ann McKee, Carol Capra, and Tim Blazina. The Sweetheart, Barbara Lofdahl, was announced by the Mistress of Ceremonies, Barb Bergerson. Mrs. Mork, Blu-Tri advisor, had the honor of crowning the Sweetheart of the Nineteen-Seventy Swirl. After the dance, most couples dined in fine restaurants, and after that, it was bowling. Everyone agreed that the entire evening was a success. LEFT TO RIGHT. Randi Nelson. Barbara Lofdahl, Kathy Bine, and Karen Bine. FORMAL: SWEETHEART SWIRL DINING, PARTIES HIGHLIGHT FRENCH CLUB The French club is a club for present and former students of French. This year's membership represents the smallest one in recent years. This year, as in the past, we had a great time at our Christmas party, and an equally pleasurable time at our French restaurant party. Those activities are a tradition of the club. The fun-seeking members of the club had an opportunity to take part in a number of other activities, so all in all it was really a fun-filled year. The advisor for French Club was Miss Lere, and the President was Sandy Widholm. With combined efforts, they planned a truly exciting year for the members of their organization. It got off to a great start this year with a lively picnic at Horseshoe Bend. Some other activities included horseback riding, a wagon ride at a ranch, the Christmas party (Weinachtsfest), Fasching (a German carnival similar to the Mardi Gras), and a trip to an authentic German restaurant. Many of these activities were financed by a successful pennant sale held during Homecoming Week. German club is open to all those who are interested in learning more about Germany. The members of our club would like to thank our advisor. Miss Carol Ittel, for her help in making this a very successful year. CLUBOFFICERS LEE ANN FLATGARD (PRES.) RANDI NELSON (V. PRES.) PINATAS AND PICNICS — SPANISH CLUB Spanish Club involved its members in many experiences ... going horseback riding for one. The day usually started out cold; but if we were lucky, the sun shone dimly through the clouds. Then there would be the usual troubles: a horse that wouldn't go faster than a slow crawl or a horse that kicked. However, everyone had fun! Then there were those picnics! These, too, were often on cool days. Everyone would bring something, and we would feast on the weiners and the pop. There would be a game of volleyball and maybe some swimming. CLUB OFFICERS SYLVIA RESTREPO (PRES.) ESTELLE LEE (V. PRES.) SHELLY SVEC (SEC.) Our parties included games, and of course, food! For Christmas, there would always be a pinata. Our club was a lot of fun, but it wouldn't have been the same without Mrs. Kurimay and those sideline lessons in Spanish. 27 STUDENT COUNCIL • • • ROW 1: Richard Anderson, Barb Bill, Pam Breyette, Andy Semelis, Sue Arnquist, Robert Lawson, Bill Loye, Cary Blumberg, Mary Zoebisch, Sue Jacobson, ROW II: John Sundahl, Linda Andrusko, Janet Silbernagle, Debbie Wiese, Ann Nugent, Mark Sven-dahl, Mike Furst, Steven Schon, Sue Whipkey, Richard Olson, ROW' III: Bonnie Larsen, Dorothy Veldey, Debbie VanDeusen, Kathy Harding, Phyllis Smith, Bill Swenson, Daryl Moen, Roy Johnson, Belinda Renstrom, Sylvia Green, Margo Bine, Scott Wattwa, ROW IV: Stan Roberts, Colleen Brown, Kathy Patterson, Barb Davis, Ruth Bolechowski, Beverly Leegard, Tom Doble, Marcia Winiworth, Sue Bergeson, Janell Tupper, Roxanne Stange, Julie Vasileff, Greg Zipoy, Barb Bergerson, Randall Clementson. REPRESENTS STUDENT BODY The Student Council, an organization to serve the students of South, made many changes in its structure and its goals this last year. Among these changes were the following: 1) the election of only two officers, the President and the Vice-President, who were given the responsibility of appointing qualified students to other offices, 2) establishment of new committees to handle different areas of student interest. Typical committees were these: 1) Special Events, 2) Student Affairs, 3) Course Evaluation. At the All-City Student Council, which includes the presidents and three chosen members from every city high school, the South delegation, one of the most dynamic, brought up the issue of school dress. The social events sponsored this year by the Council were very successful. Homecoming, at the end of October, featured the Sir Raleighs at the evening dance. The profits made were $400. Next was the Sadie Hawkin's dance which featured the Perspectives ; then last was Sno-Week's dance, which had as its main attraction, Danny's Reasons. 28 Pres. For forty-six years the South High chapter of the National Honor Society has served to promote and to recognize outstanding scholastic achievement among South's students. The members of the society pledge themselves to leadership and service in their school and community, to good character, and to continuing scholarship. Qualifications for the Honor Society are far more than the 3.2 average needed to be nominated. Students are judged by their teachers on character, scholarship, leadership, and service (CSLS). A student must be interested and devoted to becoming a well-rounded scholar by actively participating in all subjects. Finally, he must be dedicated to the improvement of his fellow students, and his community. This year the Honor Society has started several ambitious projects. Among them are participating in the South-Central Pyramid, and in the North Central Evaluation of our school. The Honor Society held an induction ceremony for incoming seniors at the end of the first marking period. Pr«. Wallock V.P. South High. Not limited to merely the usual lethargic method of reporting the events of the year, this year's Tiger used contrasts in old and new as its theme. The history of South is as full of contrasts as is today's world. The ultimate in contrasts for South arrived this year with the NEW SOUTH. Tying up the events of the 1969-70 school year with its theme should serve to remind us of our heritage and our future. The realization of the recording of the events of this year was made possible by the assistance of South's great friend, Mr. Bill Johnson, our photographer. The Tiger staff thanks Miss Lavella Bremer for her kind assistance throughout the school year. Her guidance and bright philosophy was appreciated by all her students on the staff. As an example, it was decided that sophomores could work on the paper; and as a result, many of them put forth a great deal of effort. Credits were also available to members of the staff. Under the leadership of Co-Editors Barb Lofdahl and Vicky Hoving, the staff met twice a week to work on the paper. Many members worked during their open time, which was a tremendous asset to the success of the paper. Many articles that were produced by the staff, and also the letters to the Editor, brought forth great concern from South's students and from teachers as well. Staff proudly inspects Southerner. These bright young girls are members of F.T.A., which stands for Future Teachers of America. This is the first time in many years that a chapter of F.T.A. has existed at South High School. The group was involved in many activities, but they did set a main goal. That goal was to expose its members to teaching, so that they could see what its really like to teach. F.T.A. is definitely one of South's more worthwhile organizations and hopefully in the years to come it will continue to grow. G.A.A., Girls' Athletic Association, has given the girls of South High an opportunity to participate in organized sports. Being a member of G.A.A. not only involves being in sports, but also participation in a number of other important things. It gives girls a chance to learn about themselves and to learn about fellow students as well. There are a number of sports which girls can participate in; they include badminton, tennis, bowling, gymnastics, golf, volleyball, swimming, and last, but not least, basketball. EMOTIONS VARIED Athletic teams in the city conference were comparable in every respect this year; and as a result, game scores were nerve-rackingly close. No one was sure who won the game until the very end. However, one thing is certain: everyone who attended a game was able to see the cutest, liveliest girls South could offer, our cheerleaders! Pictured on the right are (L TO R) Kathy Bine, Olivia Ferguson, Sue Whipkey, Lori Junjak, Rebecca Brennen, Colleen Brown, Pam Breyette, Karen Bine. Being mascot this past year at South was a very rewarding experience for me. It's something that I will always remember. I truly enjoyed being Tiger; it gave me an opportunity to represent my school and to be South! As I pass on my title to the new Tiger, I can only hope that she experiences the fun and excitement that I so often did. Also, I hope the new South High will become better united in school spirit, so that we all may be proud of South. Sincerely, Lori L. TO R.: Roberta Brennen, Sue Arnquist, Debbie Sandes, Sandy Nolen. IMPRESSES CROWDS! This year's Tigerettes seemed to be the prettiest and most talented that South has ever had. Although with less than a dozen members, it wasn't the largest group that the leader, Mrs. johnson, has worked with. Their countless hours of hard practice was reflected in their perfect performances. The colorful outfits and talented numbers were appreciated by everyone who attended a pepfest, football, or basketball game. These girls deserve lots of recognition for what they have unselfishly done for their high school. Perfection is typical for Tigerettes. ■ '• «r. - ■ t ' - FRONT ROW: Ed Benson, Randy Johnson, Ron Tischmack, Bob Lawson, Bruce Wollack, John Hardeman, Ed Eibon, Keith Grand-hois, Tim Eagen, Sieve Eide, Bob Gallagher, Mike Packard, SECOND ROW: Gary Ruhl, Paul Gonzales, Rick Olson, Mark Svcn-dahl, John Wigen, Andy Semilis, Bryant Whipkey, John Larson, Steve Schon, James Allen, Dale Walingford, THIRD ROW: Dan Resbeck, Gary Svidron, Marty Duda, Jeff Christianson, Lloyd Voight, Andy Kissel, Bob Ericson, Roger Schmidt, Tom Knoblough, Rick Rogers, Mgr. A Coach Haugen talks it over with Randy Johnson. An inexperienced Tiger football team, led by captains Ed Eibon and John Hardeman, battled through the season with limited success. The offensive line was small, but good. Keith Hardeman, Rick Olsen, Ed Eibon, Bruce Wollak, Ed Benson, and Tim Eagen opened the way for an all junior backfield. Andy Semilis showed signs of becoming a top ranking fullback, and quarterback John Larson is considered one of the best in the city. The tigers moved the ball well in every game except the first game of the season, against our arch rivals Roosevelt. The defense, extremely young and inexperienced, were unable to develop into a top flight unit. Ed Eibon, John Hardeman, Keith Grandbois, Warren Zumberg, and Robert Gallagher were the seniors who played outstanding football and gave a good account of themselves. Most Valuable Player, Ed Eibon, played outstanding football in every game, and his drive and determination was an exhibit for all of the young players to see. Hopefully, next season should prove to be a winning one, if our juniors exercise the athletic talent that so many of them possessed this year. Co-captains John Hardeman and Eddie Eibon. K. SOPHOMORES POST 1-6 RECORD The sophomores posted a 1-6 record, but injuries to key personnel hampered their season. Marty Duda, who quarterbacked the sophomores to their first victory, was injured in the second game of the season. Then the sophomores had trouble finding a replacement for him. Injuries to Mark Longhofper and Gary Ruhl also hampered the sophomores' success. Ron Petrich, coaching in his first year at South, said he was very happy at the progress his sophomores made. Practices for Cross-Country were held twice a day, at 7:00 AM, and at 3:00 PM, and members of the team ran anywhere from seven to ten miles. This is undoubtedly the main reason for the team's impressive season, says Coach Kaari. The team would have been even better, if it had had more depth. Next year all but one senior is returning, so the coming season should prove to be even more impressive! Hard practice pays off. Capts. Bob Gilmore, Greg Zipoy. Co-Captain Sivigny shows the winning form. South's swimming team, led by Captains Charles Beckman, Stan Enebo, and Don Sivigny, was a very young one this year. But the inexperience of the team didn't hinder its performance, because it steadily improved as the season went on. All of our swimmers appeared to have talent, and at least two members were noted as being outstanding. They were Charles Beckman, and Junior Andy Ozalins. They both had 7 and 8 first place finishes in ten meets, respectively. Coach Haugen states that next year's team should show great improvement over this year's 1-9 league record and 8th place finish in the districts. Slaloms were held at Buck Hill and Hyland Hills. After a long tiring season, our team ended sixth in District Seventeen. Tim Eagen was captain of this year's Ski team. A good summary of this year's season was expressed by Coach Roscoe when he said, It was a profitable year considering we only broke five skis, and we had no injuries. The Nineteen-Sixty-nine and Nineteen-Seventy hockey team left South with a 7-9 record. With only two seniors on this year's team, a better season is predicted for next year. The team did improve from game to game, despite the loss of key linemen and defensemen through ineligibility. The team will suffer a great loss with the graduation of seniors Bob Gallagher and Delwin Swanson. Their skill and devotion to the game is a credit to themselves and to the team. Next year's team will be built around the nucleus of Jim Allen at center, Steve Murphey as goalie, and John Larson at defense.
