We of the 1955 Tiger Staff dedicate this book to a man who has lived up to the motto, “Be South. He is South High’s most prominent graduate, Judge Luther W. Youngdahl. An ambitious student at South, Judge Youngdahl participated in debates and the Senior Class play; and was an active member of Hi-Y’s predecessor, the Bean Club. Moreover, he relinquished his position as center on the football team for a paper route which helped pay his school expenses. After graduation in 1915, he attended the University of Minnesota and Gustavus Adolphus College. Following his schooling he held the positions of city attorney, municipal judge in Minneapolis, district judge of Hennepin County, and member of the Minnesota Supreme Court. On January 8, 1947, Luther Youngdahl became the twenty-seventh Governor of Minnesota, holding office for three terms. His determination to make Christianity work in government was a driving force behind his administration. Moreover, his slogan, Honesty and humanity in government,” was paramount in all his law enforcement and public welfare programs, which made Minnesota a leader in more than one field. In addition to his long record of service in youth and religious activities, Youngdahl strove to strengthen home and family life. At this time Luther W. Youngdahl holds the highest position of his career, Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. All through his life Judge Youngdahl has upheld South’s ideals and traditions of honesty, integrity, consideration, sincerity, ambition, and respect. His example is an inspiration to the present and future students of South High. 2
