Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1955 volume:

Presented by THE SENIOR CLASS SOI Tll IIIGII SCHOOL Minneapolis 4, Minnesota 1 We of the 1955 Tiger Staff dedicate this book to a man who has lived up to the motto, “Be South. He is South High’s most prominent graduate, Judge Luther W. Youngdahl. An ambitious student at South, Judge Youngdahl participated in debates and the Senior Class play; and was an active member of Hi-Y’s predecessor, the Bean Club. Moreover, he relinquished his position as center on the football team for a paper route which helped pay his school expenses. After graduation in 1915, he attended the University of Minnesota and Gustavus Adolphus College. Following his schooling he held the positions of city attorney, municipal judge in Minneapolis, district judge of Hennepin County, and member of the Minnesota Supreme Court. On January 8, 1947, Luther Youngdahl became the twenty-seventh Governor of Minnesota, holding office for three terms. His determination to make Christianity work in government was a driving force behind his administration. Moreover, his slogan, Honesty and humanity in government,” was paramount in all his law enforcement and public welfare programs, which made Minnesota a leader in more than one field. In addition to his long record of service in youth and religious activities, Youngdahl strove to strengthen home and family life. At this time Luther W. Youngdahl holds the highest position of his career, Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. All through his life Judge Youngdahl has upheld South’s ideals and traditions of honesty, integrity, consideration, sincerity, ambition, and respect. His example is an inspiration to the present and future students of South High. 2 TIGER STAFF With a sense of accomplishment and sincere happiness the 1955 Tiger Staff sees in print the fruit of its labors, the 1955 Tiger. Now we can look back and note what we accomplished as we strived to publish a good book. We see that characteristics such as co-operation, dependability, efficiency, and persistency have developed in each of us. Moreover, we have learned practical knowledge such as making artistic layouts, selecting type sets, and judging how well a photograph will reproduce. Spending hours together arguing good naturedly over layouts and working furiously to meet deadlines, we have become an efficient team. Also, we know that each member of the staff has been of service to the school and has gained new friends. In addition, we have learned to compromise and to expand the scope of our thinking so that we can take advantage of other people’s ideas. Thus, each of us has had to use our minds and imagination to the utmost. However, we could not have done this job alone. Mr. Arendt has been a wonderful advisor, helping us out of difficulties and giving us needed encouragement. Larson Studio. Dahl Co., Photomatic, and Harrison Smith Co. are organizations whose patience and helpfulness have made us glad that we were able to work with them. Moreover, the faculty and students of South High have been co-operative and helpful. Thanking all these groups in behalf of the Tiger Staff, we voice our hope that the 1955 Tiger will be a source of enjoyment and an album of memory to all students of South High. Then we can consider our job a success. Diane Bouchard, Carol Erickson, Co-editors. Row I M. Born; S. Bloom; N. Miller; G. Corcoran; J. Nowak. Artwork; Business Manager. A. Stenmark; D. Schwalbe. To many students, the Tiger will mean seeing their pictures, writing autographs, and leaving behind lessons and homework. For others, the Tiger will contain memories of daily experiences in the joy of youth, friendship, and growth. As the year progresses and students begin counting the remaining days of school, seniors begin counting the days with misgivings. To them, the dwindling number means not, “Oh boy, vacation’s almost here!’’ but rather “Golly, this year went fast!” Graduation brings to a close the most memorable chapter in our lives. Of course, high school days have meant lots of hard work, but our efforts have more than been repaid in fun, friends, and experiences. The memory of these years, which can never be regained, is recorded in the pages of the Tiger. Now, perhaps, we get a thrill from these pictures and words; however, as the years go by the 1'iger will gain added meaning and eventually become one of our most valued possessions. Soon after Commencement, our classmates will scatter as seeds before the wind. Some will enter the Armed Services, others will continue their schooling, a number will marry, and most will work. Perhaps one of our classmates will become famous. Who knows? The class of '55 may produce a second Madame Curie, Winston Churchill, or Lionel Barrymore. However few of our graduates do become famous, a great many of them will be successes; not perhaps in a large way, but in the realization of their personal goals as housewives, parents, secretaries, salesmen, and commonplace everyday people. Happiness and a small success is far more important than notoriety and money. Some years ago, from 1908 to 1933 South High had as its principal Joseph Jorgens. A man who personified the spirit of South High. Jorgens once wrote: The jungle floor crawls and struggles, but high in the tree tops there arc birds of beautiful plumage and song. There is sunlight and there is joy. There arc brilliant orchids, clinging vines, and plants hanging like chandeliers in a fairy castle. But below, flying and crawling pests, snakes, and malarial mosquitoes swarm. The Tiger stalks alone. He is lord and master of the realm. He imbibes the wisdom blinked bv the owl; he grins at the capering and humor of the monkey ; he respects the eagerness of combat and action revealed by the lion ; and amidst the expression of beauty and joy of life warbled by the birds, he gives vent to the exuberance of his vitality and spirits as does the Orange and Black enthusiast. So let us join the grand ensemble: ‘Rah! Rah! South! Long live the brindled Tiger, fie never knows he’s licked.’ ’’ It was Jorgens also who introduced the well known slogan. “Be South.” Here at South this slogan has become a tradition, a standard by which South High people proudly live and learn. Honesty, integrity, sincerity, consideration, ambition, respect — all these things add up to “Being South.” Throughout your life be proud of your school, uphold its honor, “Be South!” FA6WILTY This year, heading South’s jungle village, is a new chief, Mr. Carl W. Anderson. He and Mr. Trcglawny, our assistant chief, supervise and advise the village. Composing the chief’s council, Mr. Ostcrhus, Miss Robinson, and Miss Kinunen are always on hand to rescue inhabitants from the many difficulties that arise. Our “White Witch Doctor,” Mrs. Long, gives healthful advice to everyone and expert care to those who may need it because of accidents or illness. Here in the jungle village there are many wonderful teachers who patiently and painstakingly guide students on the road to an education. Occasionally a novice strays into the jungle, but the guides arc always on the scene to rescue him from perils of ignorance and to take him further along the paths of knowledge. Inspired to greater heights, students are instilled with the desire to reach higher goals. Time passes and many things arc forgotten, but remembered well are those whose deeds demand recall. Thus, our faculty gains forever a place in our memory. James TrcRlawny. Assistant Principal Four of our peppiest teachers— Miss Campbell, Miss Lothrop. Mr. Hutchins, and Mr. Rainey — led us in a few cheers at one of our pep fests. Jerry Arcndt Betty Atkins Almyra Baker Lester Barnard Alice Campbell Douglas Davis Gertrude F.llifT Pauline Forsyth Esther Frazier 8 Elizabeth Bray Albert Brekkc I.avella Bremer Evelyn Bruce As we approach the end of another school year, it might he well for us to pause and evaluate our accomplishments. For each of you who is a senior, graduation represents the culmination of a desire which has now become a reality. Probably you are the only one who can make an honest appraisal of the training you have received, and it may be that you will be able to do so more accurately a few years from now than you can at this moment. I am sure that you realize that you are going out into a society which needs a great deal of improvement. I hope that you have been given the necessary background of information and skills so that you may attack the problems of life in an intelligent manner. For the past several years the faculty of South High has been doing its best to prepare you for the tasks which lie ahead. Our best wishes go with you. For those of you who will return to us in the future for further training, I am confident that you will take over the cloak of leadership which the graduates are passing to you. There are many problems yet to be solved, and it should not be otherwise, for it is in solving problems and overcoming obstacles that we prove our right to the final reward — a high school diploma. I hope that you will have a very enjoyable summer and that you will return next fall with the determination to make next’year as successful as this past one has been. Gunderson. Here in the mi lst of the hustling, bustling jungle a student has one place that he can call home. Homeroom is that small sanctuary where he feels that he belongs and where he can learn what is happening around the village. Although he may be lost in the bustle of the school's activity, here in his homeroom, he is an important Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior tribe member; here, there is never a dull moment. Rushing to finish forgotten homework, studying frantically for a test first hour, discussing a problem with one's advisor, chatting with friends, catching up on last night’s lost sleep — these are some of the ways that today's student spends his time in homeroom. Upper classmen usually feel more allegiance to their tribe than to their Homeroom. Progressing from one tribe to another, they become more active in school village affairs and begin planning and carrying out their tribal activities. Junior tribe members think with anticipation towards the day when they can say, “Move Buddy, I’m a Senior!’’ JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Pres. — Jerry Bridgcmau Vice Pres.— Leo Vcrrctt Sgt. at Arms — Curt Lindhcrg Sgt. at Arms—Duane Hocchcrl JUNIORS HOMEROOM 4 — Juniors Row I M. These organizations have such a wide scope that, no matter where a person’s interest lies, there is one group especially for him. Service to the school, fun, fellowship, training in special fields, improvement in physical ability — these arc some of the aims of the various organizations. It’s plain to see that each poor little Tiger could have no trouble finding something to do with his spare time, but rather, deciding to which of the many activities he should give his time. The smart little Tiger — who is really in the know — joins as many groups as his time will allow. He knows that in this way he shall make many new and good friends, enrich his life through service, have many wonderful experiences, and enjoy good times. He also knows that he receives from the organization no more than he puts into it; thus, he makes himself a better member. Honor Society Row I M. I.arson, S. Trcmblcy, C. Johnson, Vice President B. They receive valuable experience in office work, a reward that more than repays for the loss of their vacant period. The Tiger Representatives tackle a big job, but representatives whose rooms win the Tiger Contest receive a free Tiger. Tiger Representatives are indeed superior salesmen. The Speech Club is for advanced speech students. Members give individual interpretations, put on plays, and plan other projects, thus becoming more experienced speakers and actors. 30 Student Council Row I D. Wicklund, J. Rydccn. H. Vadcr, N. Dahl. A Lawrence. 43 In the jungle a Tiger must fight for his existence. Conquering his enemies, he has proved his strength. South High Tigers, the village athletes, must fight too, not only for honors, but also for self-improvement. They have enemies of indifference, poor physical strength, and defective teamwork. They may win the game, but initial battles are fought on the practice field. A Tiger wins, not by accident, but by using his cunningness and strength. Thus, to succeed, high school athletes need brains as well as brawn. The athlete gains command of his body and command of his mind; proud and yet humble in victory as well as in defeat, the South High Tiger deserves special admiration and support. Athletics are an essential part of a complete education. Teamwork, fellowship, and good sportsmanship are part of a living experience found in athletics. To admire the athlete is the command of the jungle; that too is part of South High. 45 ■954 FOOTBALL IT’S NOT THAT THEY WON OR LOST BUT HOW THEY PLAYED THE GAME.” — GRANTLAND RICE LES BARNARD SOUTH 6 SCORES ROOSEVELT 13 SOUTH 6 HENRY 0 SOUTH 6 WASHBURN 28 SOUTH 25 SOUTHWEST 14 SOUTH 7 MARSHALL 6 SOUTH 24 CENTRAL 6 SOUTH 12 NORTH 7 SOUTH 31 VOCATIONAL 18 ART FREDRICKSON WALT BUTTERWICK ips 4- 5 ir . CO-CAPTAINS PAT McMURTRlE STALKING WITH THE TIGERS According to city coaches, South High was a pre-season favorite. The first teams South met were Roosevelt, Henry, and Washburn. These three games were supposed to be crucial for South. Actually they weren’t. Being defeated by Roosevelt and Washburn, South came back to finish the rest of the games undefeated. Winning six and losing two, the Tigers came in third in the city. The Tigers still can roar. End, Jim Westby was placed on the Allcity first team; quarterback, Dick “Chico” Randazza and guard, Ron Keavy were placed on the All-city second team. Although they came in seventh in the city, they came very close to winning many games, and they defeated Roosevelt 48 to 47 in their first game Dick Horn, Don Nelson, and Terry Rossom were outstanding players; Dick Randazza was put on the all city team. Our high scorers were Dick Randazza and Dick Horn. Many underclassmen came out for basketball, so perhaps next year’s reward will be better. For the second consecutive year, our hockey team won the Minneapolis and Region 5 championships and a berth in the State Tournament. A round-robin schedule was planned, and South defeated every team in the city. However, our luck seemed to run out, and Johnson beat us 5-4 in the Twin City championship game. Throughout the season, speculation ran high as to whether or not South would be able to defeat the range teams in the State Tournament. Many were surprised when South beat Eveleth 3-1 in a preliminary game at Williams Arena. Moreover, history was made at the State Tournament when South defeated Thief River Falls in a thrilling eleven over-time endurance contest. The score was 3-2! However in South’s second game of the State Tournament, the exhausted Tigers were defeated for the second time by Johnson 3-1. Also South was defeated by South Saint Paul 2-1. The winning goal was made in the last ten seconds! South failed to place in the State Tournament, but our team’s record was one of which we could be justly proud. Defenseman Larry Aim was selected as an All-state player, and Dick Koob, Jim Westby, Larry Aim, and Norman Dahl were chosen All-city. RUNNER-UPS 7 One of the highlights of the year, Home Room Volleyball, makes it possible for every student to play. Also it creates school spirit, and fosters teamwork between boys and girls. 57 The jungle abounds with activity. From busy ants crawling in the sand, to monkeys chattering in the treetops, it is alive. This abundance of life makes it exciting. South High’s village has caught this spirit of life and action, and every inhabitant has found it fun not only to watch but also to become a part of these village activities. He has fun; he makes new friends; he learns how' to cooperate, to coordinate, to accept responsibility, and to organize; and he gains valuable experience in developing his special talents. Class plays, banquets, homecoming celebrations, the senior prom, various dances, the C. F. hayride, Howdy Week, the auditorium pep fests — all these and many more provide an excellent way for students to get together as friends, as a club, as a class, or as a school. It’s up to each individual to make village activities lively by being active himself. The happiest students take part in the most activities. They are giving their best to everything always. S « WEEK Clash Day, the sale of orange and black beanies, a volley ball tournament starring Jim Terry’s Senior champs, and a skating party despite sub-zero weather were the opening features of Sno Week. In addition, the week was crammed with rehearsals for the Sno Week program which featured acts such as the Choralaires, a pantomime by Ardis Stenmark and Patti Seeker, and an amusing portrayal of the Hockey team. However, the thrills really began when Mary Kay Burns was crowned queen, the first Junior to win this title. Attended by Gloria Carlson, Joyce Antonsen, and Barbara Herkal, Mary Kay reigned over the Sno Ball which ended the exciting week. •' “V 63 Cast Joan Burman....... Steve Roland ..... Thus, learning about our precious American heritage of basic freedoms and responsibilities is our duty as students and as citizens. South High has made great progress by educating its students for citizenship. Moreover, we have won the Freedoms Foundation Award. The Freedoms Foundation Award is given to citizens, organizations, or schools that have made outstanding achievement in bringing about a better understanding of the American way of life. The Freedoms Foundation is a national award; people from all over the United States send in entries which are judged by a group of state Supreme Court jurists and National executive officers of patriotic, veterans, and service clubs. This group was headed by Dr. George Humphrey, president of the University of Wyoming. For the third year in succession, South has won a principal award. South's winning entry consisted of an “American Way Book containing ten projects initiated by the Speech Department. These projects included bulletin board displays, speeches, and essays. More than two hundred of South’s students worked on the book which was compiled by a special committee headed by Jane Eschweilcr and Zile Cukurs under the direction of Mrs. Elliflf. The “American Way Book” contained three sections: “The Fundamental Belief in God,” “Expressing Our Freedoms,” and the “Trip to Valley Forge.” The award consisted of a “Freedoms Library,” the George Washington Honor Medal, and the trip to Valley Forge where the presentation was made on February 22, 1955 in the barn where George Washington had his headquarters. Mrs. Elliff and Jane Eschweiler took the trip or the “Freedoms Pilgrimage” which was an educational tour of Valley Forge, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. The presentation of awards, by the guest speaker and Clifford Hood, president of the United States Steel Corporation, was broadcasted on all N.B.C. stations. We should be proud of the outstanding work our school has done to preserve the ideals of democracy and freedom which are so dear to each of us. TIGER WINNERS The winning homerooms in this year’s Tiger Contest are 211, 103, and 104. The representatives from these rooms are: Karen Dorrian, freshman; Jeanne Henriksen, sophomore; and Edith LeMay, junior, not pictured. These representatives were the first to have every student in their room make a down payment on this year’s Tiger. ALMA MATER When Alma Mater calls her sons to Old South High, They rally ’round her mighty throne from far and nigh; Her blazing banners gleam aloft with orange flame, Her sons adore her, stand before her, cheering forth her name. Though years may come when we are gone from Old South High, They ne’er will take a loyal heart from Old South High; Though silent time steals fast upon us, love is young, In spite of years, of foes and fears, thy praises shall be sung. Chorus: Alma Mater true, All our hearts imbue With a love for thee that cannot die. And we’ll dare to do, Alma Mater true, As should all good sons of Old South High. 69 In the South High jungle village, the oldest, most experienced, and most respected of tribes are the seniors. These seniors have lived long in the jungle; they have been taught many facts and skills to help them after they leave the village. The tribe educates the senior by teaching friendship and co-operation. Held by these ties of friendship, a senior becomes loyal to his tribe by taking part in its activities. He learns to co-operate and to compromise; thus, he becomes a finer person. After graduation a senior must solve his problems alone. Leaving the familiar surroundings of the village, he can no longer rely on jungle guides for help. He will find that completing High School is a milestone to further knowledge; to learn is to live. Peculiarly sad as he watches friends graduate, he knows that his High School years have been precious, and he will miss South High. The fun of friendship, the achievements of the Class of 55 — these things he will never forget. SENIOR ADVISORS: Mr. Kogl, Miss Gnade. Mrs. Hcggen.
