And there was a TOWER . . . long a beloved landmark to many. It was a symbol; it was a tradition. It was a reminder to all who loved it to “Be South. ... But progress took OUR TOWER—the stones, the bricks—but not South's spirit. . . . Today, we have the NEW SOUTH— a more modern, more convenient—even more comfortable school building. Our heating and ventilating system is the newest. Our fluorescent lights are scientifically perfect. Our auditorium 2 Did Come Down, Dream a Reality has new curtains, new spots, and also—tor our pleasure—a new electric organ. Our new Home Economics rooms are our pride and joy. They are well planned and completely equipped. They are beautiful to see; they are practical for use. . . . At our school there is a club for every student. There are clubs for sports enthusiasts, for music lovers, for the socially minded, and for those who wish to give service to the school. In addition there is one organization which honors certain outstanding juniors and seniors. This organization is a chapter of the National Honor Society. Almost everyone hopes to become a member of the South High Honor Society: only a few do. The membership is very limited. Glad och god skall manniskan vara. Our very own homerooms were strange places with hanging wires, no telephones, unexpected holes and queer noises! SEPTEMBER 1953?!!???!! Less shambles? Yes, but much more confusion! Quite a few of us found our homerooms in strange places; all of us had to learn new homeroom numbers. Slowly but surely, as time went on. our dreams of a modern South became realities. Today's homerooms have fluorescent lighting and completely new heating and ventilating units. What the future will bring we cannot say. but if the past year is any indication, we will see our dreams of a better South materialize in the coming years. JUNIORS HOMEROOM 208 — Junior Row I; E. S.D. 46 G. Osum Halfback N. Dahl Confer Although the record of South High's football team of two wins, two losses, and three ties was not too impressive, the season was the kind where one or two breaks could have turned defeat into victory. One of the biggest improvements that happened was the changing of a mediocre line into a fierce hard-charging unit of boys. There was a team victory, but also there were some outstanding stars. One of these stars was Gary Aim. who led the team at quarterback. He sparked the team many times with his excellent passing to two of the finest ends in the city. Jim Westby and Larry Aim. Gary was chosen most valuable player by his teammates, and he was picked Second Team All-City Quarterback. Dick Mueller, one of the Tri-Captains, proved very valuable, playing fullback on offense, and linebacker on defense. The other Captains were Ed Saugestad and Gayle Schuffenhauer. Ed, one of South's outstanding linemen, played both offense and defense; Gayle played mostly defense where he backed up the line very well. The most outstanding game of the season was the Vocational game, where the Tigers reached their peak of performance. The Edison and North games were also hard-fought and well-played. J. Weitby End J. James $ Alma Ifiatet When Alma Mater calls her sons to Old South High. They rally 'round her mighty throne from far and nigh: Her blazing banners gleam aloft with orange flame. Her sons adore her. stand before her. cheering forth her name. Though years may come when we are gone from Old South High. They ne’er will take a loyal heart from Old South High; Though silent time steals fast upon us. love is young, In spite of years, of foes and fears, thy praises shall be sung. Chorus: Alma Mater true. All our hearts imbue With a love for thee that cannot die. And we ll dare to do, Alma Mater true, As should all good sons of Old South High.
