At South the Tiger has fulfilled this function in a very successful way. In my first year at South it has been a real pleasure to get acquainted and to serve so many fine young people. Past experience is responsible for South ideals, school spirit, and traditions; and all students and alumni can point with pride to their school. May each succeeding year continue to he the best for South. Q (JUJJL, Long hard hours every day—You know those teachers are really O.K.! Jf acuity L. Gnade J. Luohine. A. Lawrence Mr. Wells S. Peterson What is a school? A building? Well, yes. but—add to one building, some assorted subjects, your favorite teachers, and you’ll have more than a building; you’ll have South High School — with its tradition of “Be South!” South’s tower is to he razed soon. It has long symbolized education to the people of South Minneapolis. It has been beloved by students and graduates. For the sake of progress — again the old gives way to the new. So South grows. A. Guy, C. Poston, R. Muckley, W. Kelly O. Pederson, L. Marchnnt 12 K. I .a nr, G. Swnrstad, I). Trow M. Olsen, A. Pihlstrom Yesterday's school began at 6:00 a.m. Today’s at 8:20. 8:20? Well, most of us slide into homeroom on time — 8:20 b! Master Andrew of Ye Old Little Red School House started out for school after eating a hurried breakfast of porridge. His little satchel contained an ink horn, a quill pen, a knife for sharpening pencils, and a few sheets of paper. Today’s modern Andy starts for school after eating well — nothing! His satchel — if he carried one — would probably contain — maybe his lunch! Master Andrew studied, memorized, and learned “Old English, German. Italian. Greek. Latin, and other “easy subjects. What no Arabic? R. KorI, C. Hutchins E. Bruce 13 F. Benner, B. Atkins P. Forsyth, L Jensen I). Tenney, M. Tangen In today’s school there’s something for every ability and every interest of ever)- student. In fact, Andy doesn’t have to fit himself to school; the school attempts to fill his every need. There is such a variety of subjects that sometimes he has a hard time limiting his program. Headin', rilin', and 'rithmetic, symbolic of the “I.ittle Red School Mouse” are still a part, but only a very small part, of the curriculum. F). Davis, K. Ilia. A. Hove 14 I.. Bremer. J. Petryk H. Hurd, E. Frazier, I). Nyholm L. Mona, B. Marconett In addition. Andy now is also offered such subjects as these: manual arts, mechanical drawing, and woodworking. Sue may lake fashion designing, secretarial practice, or foods. The Andy or Sue of today’s school gets out of school only what he or she puts into it. Driver's training, occupational relations, and world problems — these are a few more of the subjects now offered to both Andy and Sue. Truly the graduate of today’s school should be prepared for life — its opportunities and its challenges. C. EllilT, A. Ixre, E. Roll 19 S. Bostrom. R. The high light of the year — full al trays to our minds appear. cttotties Day by day the suspense grew. We guessed, we wished, we hoped. Who would be our royalty? The day and hour arrived. Loyal subjects were entertained with a review of the highlights of the yesterdays of South. Then the candidates marched down the aisle to the strains of “Pomp and Grcumstance.” Anticipation and suspense dominated the audience! At last, the scrolls were unrolled! The King? TOM WARME! The Queen? SUE KUMPF! So started the reign of King Tom and Queen Sue; so endeth a period of waiting, anticipation, and suspense. Allen Quigley, Jim Norman, and Tom Warme 56 Homecoming festivities continued all afternoon and long into the evening. In the afternoon the football team did its best to “Corral the Cowboys”! At half-time the band performed for the royalty and their attendants: Harriet Toft. Jim Norman, Leona Gilbertson, and Allen Quigley. In the evening the students and the alumni danced to the music of Dick Erickson's band . . . and then it was midnight. Another perfect Homecoming day had ended. 57 Jack Frantz Roosevelt’s Winter Carnival King TEARS and SMILES Carolyn Mosbey 1953 Winter Sports Week Queen Dorothy Erickson South's 1952 Winter Sports Week Queen Seuted: Class Princesses — Carolyn Mosbey, Ardis Stenmark, Joan Rakken, and Sylvia Palmer. Tickets for a ride sold at only 25 cents. Directions given to us by the seniors consisted of “It’s that-a-way!” As the days and weeks went by, we learned all things: to accept the teasing of the seniors; to do homework, and lots of it; to anticipate but to dread low marks on our report cards; to purchase tickets for the games not to mention “getting out early.” Yes, in a short time we learned much in addition to our lessons. Freshmen, sophomore, and junior homerooms took active part in our annual Tiger Contest. On offense were Stan Baker, who proved himself most valuable player because he could lie shifted to all positions in the backfield, and Dick Mueller, a hard hitting fullback, who made second team All-City. Bob Ludgate and Dick Kellington proved to be very valuable on the defensive line. The all around players — Tom Christensen, Bob Broman, and Co-Captain George Kurilla — were outstanding in the line, on both offense and defense. George also made second team All-City. Roland Anderson, a good team general, picked the team up on many occasions for good scoring drives. Dick Smith and Roger Salchert, sixty minute players, played both defense and offense. The Edison game, the hardest played, was the most outstanding game of the season for the Tigers. South, in the West. Henry, and Washburn games, lost opportunities for a better season due to too many injuries. South 0 North 33 South 33 Vocational 8 South 0 West 20 South 20 Edison 0 South 13 House veil 7 South 13 Henry 14 South 0 ashluirn 6 79 08 CITY SOPHOMORE CHAMPS With Coach W'alt Butterwick working with the backfield and Coach Jim Lushine prompting the linemen, our B squad fought its way through an undefeated season. South had scored 105 points; its opponents had tallied only 8. This amazing record shows much promise for South’s 1953 and 1954 football seasons. Row 1. L. Aim, J. Terry, P. McMurtrie, N. Dahl. R.
