In looking back twenty-five years, even fifty years, we realize that despite superficial changes in styles, times, and traditions, basically we, the graduates of 1950, are the same as the graduates of 1900 or 1925. We wish, as they did, to leave a record of achievements, a token of happy moments, a hint of our futures. This book will be a key, opening the door of the past; a bridge spanning the memories of days gone by and the actualities of today. Through these pages the class play, the prom, homecoming, and the championship games, as well as pleasant thoughts of teachers and friends, will be revived and relived. To keep memories fresh, to please the casual reader, and to leave an account of the graduating senior class of 1950 — these are the aims of the staff of the Mid-century Tiger. 4 ecUccLtiact To our Hockey Team and its coach, we, the June class of 1950, dedicate this Tiger. With your victories you brought pennants and championships to South. With your teamwork, sportsmanship, and character, you brought honor to South. We salute you — the Champions of 1950. 5 6 7 ADMINISTRATION Modern education presents many problems other than academic. In our present educational program, the principal must take an active part in all activities in order to understand and help solve present problems in a modern high school. Our principal, Mr. Maass. takes an active interest in school functions. Whenever possible he attends athletic, music, and other school events in order to do this. OFFICE STAFF I. Guthormso, M. Anderson, E. Smith, A. Syverson. One of the most co-operative and smoothly run units in the building is the office. By working with the clerks, students gain initiative and vital office experience. 8 Everyone makes mistakes: no one is perfect. Only through mutual understanding and co-operation of both students and faculty can we ever hope to achieve a high standard of education and produce better citizens of this world. To accomplish this is the aim of the faculty of South High School. Mr. Olsen is a familiar sight to those students committing misdemeanors. Acting as a referee, he sees that no friction arises between the students and faculty. Hey Kids! Know the Deans? Who are they? Why Miss Robinson and Mr. Osterhus, of course. For example, do you need a job? See the deans. They will write a reference and do everything they can to help you get a job. Dealing with the more personal problems of the students and their families we find Miss Wahlgren, South High's visiting teacher. 9 Upper Loft Mr. Hutchin MUSIC Homeroom Substitute. An informal farewell and welcoming party was given by the faculty for Mr. Lundin and Mr. Olsen, respectively. The party, held early in the Fall, was planned by Miss Davidson and Miss G. Smith. The Master of Ceremonies. Mr. Hutchins, called on various teachers to perform stunts. Later refreshments were served. 10 Upper Loft Miss E. Mr. Olsen, a former graduate of South High, received a framed report card. II The boa constrictor shown at the left with part of Miss Bruce's second hour biology class, came to this country on a boat load of bananas and wound up in a glass house in room 10. The students force-fed him on angle worms and the boa was particularly fond of being handled as he always responded to such treatment with activity. Unfortunately during the Christmas vacation, when the room temperature was very low, he died, for the constrictor needs a warm temperature in which to survive. Included in these are class field trips, dissecting of animals, and movies, which encourage students' interest in nature. The biology course has now been changed to include both animal and human biology together in one class. Here we see a botony class engaged in greenhouse practice. They seem to get a real pleasure in watching the plants grow. Seniors have been planning for graduation since the first day of the new term this year. SOUTHERNER STAFF Answering the challenge of the pen, mightier than the sword, embryo journalists applied their collective talents to the editing of the school paper. Any student wishing to work on the Southerner staff must, during his junior year, take a class in news writing in place of English. A certain percentage of these aspiring newsmen are elected to the staff when they are seniors. The Southerner representatives aid the staff by promoting enthusiasm in their home rooms. Their program consists of singing at the Christmas concert, the Easter Program and at various other occasions about school. 74 Most members of the Choir, the highest rating organization for singers at South, were previously members of one or the other of the two Glee Clubs. After a vocal test is passed, the candidates are permitted to become members of the Choir. This organization represents South by singing at various public meetings. Some of the places where they have performed are at the Nicollet Hotel for the State School Board Convention, Wesley Methodist Church, and tho Formers' and Mechanics' Bank. 75 Y TEENS Y Teens, an interdenominational branch of the Y. W. C. A., includes both Blue and Silver Tri. Elected representatives to the city-wide I. C. C. (Inter-Club-Council) attend conventions and discuss their various problems. Y Teens have meetings twice a month to promote better personal relations, health, fellowship, religon, art and recreation. Two of their successful projects this year included the selling of Christmas cards and the cleaning up of Room 308 for their publicity headquarters. Big Three Presidents: J. Nichols. G. Campbell, J. This group plays for commencement, class play, P.T.S.A. meetings and other events. For evening performances formals and dark suits prevail. The band, directed by Arthur J. Lawrence, is a self-supporting organization offering both in-school and out-of-school activities. From marching band to concert band entails only a change of uniform and music. Adding color to this group are the flag twirlers. baton twirlers, and color guards. The band’s activities range from performing at football games to the playing of an annual Spring Concert and Dance, during the course of which letters are presented for two years' service, along with stars for additional years. Highlighting this year's activities was the all-day trip to Wisconsin late in the spring. Still on the job during the summer, the band marches in the Aquatennial parade. 79 Top Row: J. After months of trying your hardest, you managed to get acquainted with the building, teachers, and rules, among other things. As time passed you seemed to change along with your friends. You have found the fun in the football games and dances that you always looked forward to. You are now a part of South, and are helping to fulfill her proud traditions. Be South.
