With Tiger Records as our theme, we have tried to make the 1949 Tiger a clear, pictorial record of our daily life at South: an account of South at work, at play, and at school. Through the years, South has been a top record collector—both in the popular vein, as on the athletic fields, and in the classical and semi-classical tradition of the classroom and of the stage. Enjoy with us these few examples of past records, and plan for the future—the future of South and of yourself. Though our collection is large, there are more records to be added. In every field we find opportunities to gain new and higher records. If we continue to set up new goals for ourselves as we break our old records, we are achieving our real aim in education. TIGER RECORDS Let's Be Friends Memories Tiger Rag You Can Depend on Me That Old Gang of Mine Another World From Now On DEDICATION To Mr. Lester Barnard, South's able athletic coach, this 1949 Tiger is respectfully dedicated. It has been Mr. Barnard, through his tireless leadership, who has built the athletic teams which have regularly captured top honors in their special fields. Watch South has been the slogan among the members of our athletic league who are acquainted with his coaching powers. Mr. Barnard will certainly be classed among South s greatest record collectors. “WE LL BE TOGETHER AGAIN” BLUE TRI SENIORS Row I (Bottom): C. Folic, P. Carlson, M. Ring, J. Siple, R. Ostrom, M. There are clubs for every type of person, for the person who is interested in giving service or who is interested in gaining friends. South's dubs are not organized wholly for social activities; they aid the individual in developing his personality, leadership, and ability to get along with others. They promote friendships. They help us in enjoying our leisure time. They promote dances and parties and help carry out school projects. All in all, we are receiving training that will help us to be better citizens and future leaders of America. TIGER STAFF Row | (Bottom): J. Holte. M. Front B. Freoman J. Olson. B. Kublas. THE LITTLE THEATER SAY IT WITH MUSIC GLEE CLUBS Mr. Hutchins became South's new music instructor after the retirement of Henry E. Griebenow. Under the direction of Mr. Hutchins, South received much acclaim in the musical field; many of our school activities were livened by his jovial personality. The two Glee Clubs and the Girls' Choir received much recognition through their talented performances and their untiring efforts in entertaining their fellow students. Despite the fact that this is Mr. Hutchins' first year here at South the Glee Clubs have gone a very long way; and we are still looking forward to many great performances in the future years. “AND THE BAND PLAYS ON” BAND The South High Band will always be remembered tor its showmanship whether in the auditorium or as a marching unit. The band, like any other organization, has its officers. It must work as a unit rather than as individuals. We must always remember that not only the musicians, but the flag twirlers, baton twirlers, and color guards play an important part and add color to the organization. All of this is made possible by the expert instruction, guidance and constant effort of Arthur J. Lawrence, the band director. L SOUTHERNER STAFF Row I (Bottom): V. Crooks. J. Smith, B. Freeman, Y. Gary Johnson and Ramona OstrorH We give cheers to our fighting football team end to Les Barnard on his 20th anniversary of coaching at South. The Coronation Ceremonies which were held in the auditorium, headed ffie Homecoming Festivities. Mr. Barnard's first team, the '28 champions, were on hand for the program. The big event of the day was the South vs. Edison game at the Nicollet Fieid. The band played an important part in the entertainment period at the half. Even though Edison was the victor everyone was in the best of spirits. Next on the agenda was the annual Homecoming dance held in the boys' gym after the game, me festive atmosphere was completed by the smooth music of Pete Swan's Orchestra. The alumni also joined in to make the Homecoming of 1948 a memorable one. “OUR SENIOR DRAMATISTS” June Mad”, a three act comedy, was chosen as the senior class play; it was portrayed by members of the June Class. Joan Horton played the part of Penny Wood, the 15 year old girl, who couldn't decide if she wanted to be a tomboy or a young lady. Her parents were portrayed by Beverly Freeman and Douglas Ludvigson. Penny is trying to make a hit with Roger Van Veck played by John Moline, who is supposedly a Casanova. After she finds him flirting with Julie Harris. Fern Fedderly. she gives him up and turns once again to her old faithful Chuck Harris. Jerry Johnson. The rest of the members of the cast are: Swede Olson, Donna Nida. Neil Lortis, Marilyn Zummack. Roger Hanson, Margaret Johnson and Darrell McIntosh. The play was directed by Mr. Wesley Kelly and assisting him were Judy Siple and Mary Ring, student directors. “ISN’T LOVE GRAND!’’ When a young man's fancy turns to the things that girls have been thinking about all winter, this is usually the result. Below are pictured some of the familiar faces we see together each day. South would never be the same without them. “MEMORIES, MEMORIES” As a freshman, sophomore, and junior one is always looking into the future toward graduation, and ttien when one's senior year rolls around one's heartbeat quickens at the thought—Graduation. Each one has both happy and sad memories about it. Though the thought of leaving South would make anyone sad. everyone hopes for future happiness. In the pictures below are seniors on their graduation day. In the upper left hand corner is the January class of 1949 on Senior Day. In the upper right hand corner are a few members of the June class measuring up gowns for Senior Day. Pictured in the lower right and left are the Commencement exercises of the January class. “DREAM OF LOVE SO TRUE” What more could one ask for in a dream than a pretty queen and a few wonderful auditoriums? Well, here are a few dreams that did come true. Pictured in the upper left is our Ice Carnival Queen, Donna Hruby. and her attendants. Donna was crowned queen in the Arena by Dave Rasmussen. President of the Student Council. In the upper right is a scene from an auditorium sponsored by the Southerner Staff. In the lower left is a scene from another auditorium sponsored by the Tiger Staff, and in the lower right is a scene from a professional demonstration on liquid air. “I’M DRIFTING BACK TO YOU” Yes, we'll oil drift bock to the fun we had at games in which the cheerleaders led us in cheers. In the circle we have our cheerleaders who supported the teams by cheering and did a great job. Pictured in the upper left hand corner is a makeup demonstration given to the senior speech classes. The victim is Swede Olson, and the onlookers are students from the speech class. The lunchroom, the place to which everyone ran when the bell rang, is pictured below in several scenes. “O’ER THE SEA OF MEMORIES” “MEMORIES, MEMORIES” ”The class will now come to order.” is a saying which we will never forget. ar d one we’ll always cherish in our hearts. In previous pictures you have seen students at play: here are a few pictures of students at work in the classroom. Pictured in the upper left hand corner is a scene from the Botany class. In the upper right is a Physics class at work on their problems. Taking a bird's-eye view we see Dewey Elden giving a report in Current Literature. Next the Art classes are at work making posters. The Cooking class in the lower left is busy baking and learning all there is to cooking. In the lower right are a couple of students examining a skeleton in Biology. These are just a few of the many classes offered at South. “CHILDHOOD DAYS, WILDWOOD DAYS” School days arc always thought ©f as childhood and wildwood days: days when you study, learn, and have fun. Below, let us reminisce through certain phases of our school life in the year gone by. Pictured in the upper left hand corner are a few members of the band practicing for an auditorium. In the upper right is a scene from the one act play, Lima Beans , which was chosen the best olay of all the senior speech classes, and then we have a familiar scene, a pep fest in the auditorium. A typical South High locker with books falling out when it opens. In the lower left hand corner are students preparing themselves for a play in the Little Theatre. In the lower right hand corner are a few members of the faculty taking time out for lunch. “AMONG THE BIRDS AND BEES” “YOU LEFT ME ALONE” You Left Me Alone. might well be the theme of students on vacation. For truly no longer does the school govern our days when vacation time rolls around, but rather we must seek employment elsewhere. These pictures represent how some students spend their vacation time, be it with the gang or working on their hobby. Tv “BUT STILL YOU’RE MY OWN” When we leave school we can't take it with us but we can always carry the memories of it. And without memories we would not have much. Pictured below are students relaxing after being at school all day. Your hobbies are just as much a part of school life as is the work in the classroom. Hobbies as well as studies make the person. “IN MY BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES” Memories, memories, some more beautiful than others. But what could be more beautiful than the Senior Prom! How could we forget the fun we hod. dancing to soft, sweet music, the beautiful formals and corsages, and all the different couples each one having a wonderful time. This is one event that no one could forget and it is one that will always linger in one’s mind. AMONG MY SOUVENIRS Another big event in the Seniors' life is the Senior banquet, where v e find good food and good fellowship the menu of the day. The banquet entertainment was provided by skits put on by the various senior homeroom members. This year's theme was “The Dreams of Wilburforce Ziggderdrof . We follow Wilburforce's life at South beginning with Commencement. j Only too soon the banquet was over. But we, the Seniors, will cherish it always among our school memories. I FOOTBALL ... I Get a Kick Out of You FOOTBALL, 1948 South High gridders had a very commendable season. They finished with five wins and two losses, and at the end of the year were rated the ten h best prep team in the state. Perhaps one of the football highKghts of the year was the Tiger trip to St. Cloud to play the Granite City outfit. The Tigers licked the small but game St. Cloud team. 27-7. to the accompaniment of roars of approval from hundreds of South students and well-wishers who had made the seventy-five-mile trip. 44 6 ... 27 vs. St. Cloud Tech. 7 29 6 South 0 vs. Edison 7 27 vs. Roosevelt 14 . 13 20 20 0 South 15 vs. Southwest 7 Totals ... ...175 67 S BASKETBALL • • • ROW I; D. THAT old gang of Mine HOMEROOMS TO YOU FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES— When you were in Junior High School it was like being a whale in the pond but after coming to South it was like being a minnow in the sea. When you were in the basement, you asked a senior where you could find 303 and he. in all sincerity, told you to take the elevator at the far end of the hall. You finally found yourself attending a real football game and hollering as you never had before. You started going to those parties and dances, which only the seniors dared to talk about. But you found out that this wasn't all to high school— you also had to study, there was something called a report card—which you heard was something to be scared of. AND NOW TO YOU JUNIORS— After struggling thru two years of bad auditorium seats, you finally got a section where you could see and hear. You were starting to become senior conscious— wondering how you could spend your Senior Year. How you wished on Prom night that you were a senior and could have gone, too. You’re just beginning to realize how fast time is passing and soon you'll be a senior, but underneath you know that you'll really miss school and all the fun connected with it after you graduate. You began to feel the prestige of a veteran after being here two or three years, you are now gradually trying to organize your class for all the good times and hard work that go with being a Senior.
