't4-f5 Ef'o'f5v-ffifvdl Civilization has been defined as the way' of li is sucha it is and must be an ever changing ogg. e ions, some communities progress faster than others and in so doing become the leaders in our world civilization. Another school year is just closing. To what progress can we as faculty, stu- dents, and parents point and say, This is our contribution to the way of life ? Do we understand that democracy is the sharing of responsibilities among human beings and the sub- duing of personal preferences in favor of those for the good of society? Do we cooperate in the endeavors that make for peace and understanding in our community, in this nation. and abroad? Do we here at South, all of us, try to make this a better place in which to live? Yes. these ideals must be practiced if we wish to say that we have made progress in this age. It is my belief that South has tried to fulfill these objectives. For that reason I trust we have shared in the great service of contributing to a nobler way of life. y, -H. H. Maass N 7 A Af L' KC-E iff - Qfiillf ,fb cffffcidmy . ,Z A ,1i'-7 6 1 fill! Tracy Sir A YEAR'S RESUME ln carrying out the theme of this year's Tiger, The Year on Parade, it might be interesting to review briefly the school events from September I947 to J'une 5948. School started with a combination of elections, new teachers, and the excitement of seeing what classes you were in. lt was amusing to see all the bewildered sophs and freshies wandering around the halls. l The girls wore long skirts and had that all-around new look. They sat on the lawn during lunch and talked to the deeply tanned fellows about the summer vacation and the club drives for the new school year. Everyone was glad of the free books, which always took such a big bite out of our allowances, but now allowed us greater freedom for our own pleasure spending. Then-football! First, the season ticket sale with T.T.T.-W.S.T., Tip the Tommies-With Season Tickets. Soon after, South played its first game of the season against Edison. We sat in the rain and watched the Tommies defeat us I3-6. The fighting spirit was now stirred and we came back the next week to down Roosevelt 20-7. The band, too, in their new uniforms, put on a fine exhibition during the half: this, of course, added to the flow of new en- thusiasm. ' The two following Fridays we smashed Henry and Washburn, respectively, to fight our way up to fourth place in the prep stand- ings. About this time the yo-yo fad started. Yo-yo's were seen in all colors, sizes, and lengths of strings, especially among the still playfully minded freshies. Wiener roasts and parties by the dozen were now the week-end pastimes for seniors. The new look for boys came in cord pants in every unusual color-fuchsia, lavender, and one striking pair, the right half orange and the left half black. The boys liked the change. Homecoming was in the air, queen and king to be elected. Queen Marilyn Stone and King Fritz Anderson reigned supreme at the homecoming celebration. Naturally, the age-old cry Kiss the Queen was met with blushes from the royalty-but they re- sponded. Another football game for homecoming. The Tigers defeated Southwest I3-6 to further cheer the fans: and the same Tiger eleven later rapidly drubbed Marshall and Central, to leave just North for the Championship game. On October 3l, we played the last city football game and eked out an I8-I4 victory over North to cop the Minneapolis championship. No one will ever forget the way the team held the Polars on the twelve-inch line, or that breath-taking touchdown pass. That evening, everyone happily went to Halloween parties or dances--some at private home and some at youth centers. Our next program of interest was the dedication of our Little Theatre as a Memorial to South's Boys of the Second World War. The dedication service was beautiful. All the gold star mothers and wives were invited. Men from all branches of the armed forces were on duty all day. A plaque, containing the names of South's boys who died while in the service, is to be placed on the wall outside the theatre. The Twin City football championship game was now on our calendar. November l4 South played Murray High of St. Paul at the University stadium. We made a fast start, getting our two touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the game. With the score I2-6 at the half, eireryone expected a high scoring game, but the teams thought differently, and at the end the score remained the same. With graduation in the offing, the 'January class activities be- gan. Peg O' My Heart, the class play, was another success to the credit of Wesley J. Kelly, director. Although it was humorous, it also had a touch of romance. The members of the cast played their parts with naturalness and ease. The next event was the Honor Society's initiation program. Students from foreign countries described the work of their coun- tries in relation to world peace. These contributions were most interesting, but, of course, the high spot of the program came as the names of the new members were read, and added to the Na- tional Honor Roll list. Now, basketball season came upon us. The slogan, Let's Stay on the Championship Track, heralded a fine spirit for the boys. They started out fine, defeating a crippled Central 40-24. ln the second conference game, the Tigers were again out in front with a 44-28 victory over West. This moved us into first place in the prep standings. Playoffs came later. E4 December l9th the P.T.A. sponsored the lce Carnival. Queen June Anderson and King Manny Kohen were picked from the senior class as frost rulers. This was great fun. Pre-Christmas excitement was now in the air. Everyone was anxious for the holiday. The lovely Christmas program heralded the fact that vacation time had arrived. After two weeks we returned to school. Everyone displayed his or her newly acquired possessions to teachers and classmates. Now the A seniors were a little sad at the thought of gradu- ating so soon. Joyce LeVi, Dorothy Lindgren, and Jim Snobeck took top honors in the Ja'nuary '48 class. Some sixty awards in athletics and service were presented on, letter day. The Senior banquet, prom, and baccalaureate services came in rapid succession and to' many of them were their first real social experiences. January 22nd was the big day for the graduates. Their com- mencement program in the evening was followed by parties, dances, and other forms of entertainment. Acts of all kinds were in the running for the Talent Show: the Apollo Club too held its annual voice contest and students from South got into the semi-finals. Our basketball championship hopes were pushed aside in the last few minutes of the Washburn-South game: we lost 44-40. But the team rallied the nextweek to down the mediocre Henry five. South's bucketeers surged forward again in basketball with only I3 seconds remaining, to cool Southwest 25-24. Fashion had its hold on some of the girls who started wearing petticoats, mostly of taffeta: these fluted ruffles danced to show below their skirts. We hoped the boys would get used to them soon. The basketball, hockey, and swimming teams ended their sea- sons. The closest thing to a championship spot was the runner-up title given to the hockey team. -Then, the strike came. These four weeks meant quite a loss to all of us students. When we came back after our enforced vacation, the faculty broke the news to us that we would have to go to school for two weeks in June, and, -no Easter vacation. What a Board of Edu- cation to declare this! This unwanted strike holiday also meant giving up the Talent Show because of lack of time to prepare. The June class seniors now organized their classes and meetings and matters got underway to decide various issues. The track team started totprepare for its season. Although it had only four returning letterman, we all had high hopes for the team. After finishing a lowly seventh in the Metropolitan meet, the cinder boys improved steadily every week. Spring, although cool, was in the air, and soon everyone was walking around looking dreamy-eyed, thinking about wiener roasts and picnics. The band presented its annual concert on April 22nd followed by dancing in the gym. The Freedom Train's visit was our next highlight. No one will forget those four and a half hungry hours we stood in line to see the Train but when we did get in, it was surely interesting to see all the documents which spelled Freedom and Democracy. Now everything came fast for the seniors. There was something doing every week or should l say every week day. Job conferences took much of our time. Ever Since Eve. the class play, was presented by the' A seniors on May I4. lt was typically high school-the boys wanting the girls to Keep their noses out of everything, with little defi- nitely decided upon. May I9, Honor Society had its initiation program. A skit show- ing the qualifications was given by senior members. The last week in May, the senior banquet was held at the Radisson Hotel. Good food and a varied program helped to make it a success. - June 4 was Letter Day. This meant honors for more of South's students. V The next great event was the Prom. The Automobile Club was the scene of the big dance. lt too was a glamorous affair. The rest of the term will bring Senior and Tiger Day, June ll. What events to anticipate! All too soon for us who leave South's doors for other work-a-day places. The Year on Parade comes to an end. ln picture and in life we reluctantly loiter, lag, and eventu- ally leave Old South, and one by one we are numbered among the alumni. Zfl' Mrs. Clover. .
