fy(M£MWul James Garfield, 20th President of the United States once said, Next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be maintained. At no time in our history has the ordinary American, whether child, youth, or adult been so vitally concerned with the problems of society as he is today. The greatest of all these problems is the establishment of peace, order and security. This, in the words of President Garfield can be maintained only by education. Upon your shoulders then, the boys and girls of our school today, is laid the responsibility of the world of tomorrow. Your understanding, your attitudes. your cooperation, your ideals of citizenship and democracy will determine the kind of world that you are going to live in. Students of South High School, you cannot escape this challenge today in your daily life. The ideals for which our brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers fought in the last World War must not be forgotten. Your participation in the activities here exemplifies your hearty cooperation in the fulfillment of this, your challenge. Since we, however, cannot be satisfied with this alone, we invite and urge all of you to further the truly democratic way of life here at South. Enjoy with me the pages of this book as they unfold examples of your past record and plan with me for our future here in this school, in this community, in this state and nation, and in the world that now knocks at our door.
