Maass, who at the close of his first year as principal of South, has enriched the life of the students and of the school. fy(M£MWul James Garfield, 20th President of the United States once said, Next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be maintained. At no time in our history has the ordinary American, whether child, youth, or adult been so vitally concerned with the problems of society as he is today. The greatest of all these problems is the establishment of peace, order and security. This, in the words of President Garfield can be maintained only by education. Upon your shoulders then, the boys and girls of our school today, is laid the responsibility of the world of tomorrow. Your understanding, your attitudes. your cooperation, your ideals of citizenship and democracy will determine the kind of world that you are going to live in. Students of South High School, you cannot escape this challenge today in your daily life. The ideals for which our brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers fought in the last World War must not be forgotten. Your participation in the activities here exemplifies your hearty cooperation in the fulfillment of this, your challenge. Since we, however, cannot be satisfied with this alone, we invite and urge all of you to further the truly democratic way of life here at South. Enjoy with me the pages of this book as they unfold examples of your past record and plan with me for our future here in this school, in this community, in this state and nation, and in the world that now knocks at our door. Feb. 7 His scholastic accomplishments bore testimony to his brilliant mind. Many students have left South with a well founded knowledge of elementary chemistry, due to his constant desire to do a thorough job of teaching. He expected sincere and honest effort on the part of his pupils, for he firmly believed that it meant hard and close work to get the most out of an education. Imprints of this philosophy will show themselves in human actions over many years and in widely scattered places. The world is better for his having lived among us. ARTHUR V. STORM JARVIS MONTGOMERY PARTRIDGE — SOUTH HIGH IWI-IM7 ALMA MATER — Harrison Collins, '08 When Alma Mater calls her sons to Old South High, They rally 'round her mighty throne from far and nigh; Her blazing banners gleam aloft with orange flame, Her sons adore her. stand before her. cheering forth her name. Though years will come when we are gone from Old South High, They ne'er will take a loyal heart from old South High; Though silent time steals fast upon us love is young, In spite of years, of foes and fears, thy praises shall be sung. Chorus: Alma Mater true, All our hearts imbue With a love for thee that cannot die. And we'll dare to do, Alma Mater true, As should all good sons of Old South High. To promote good citizenship among the student body. 2. To act as a medium for the expression of the students' reactions and ideas. 3. To cooperate with organizations of South which are fostering activities of benefit to the school. RED CROSS COUNCIL H. BRUDER MRS. BYERLY 0. RASMUSSON SPONSOR S. NOROEEN M. EVANS M. ROSEN The Junior Red Cross of South High School, like our government, is formed on Democratic principles. The council is a planning-body, not a working-body. Many service projects for the Junior Red Cross are carried on at South, but none directly by the Council. The various clubs and organizations undertake these individual projects. In this way, more interest is generated in doing things for the Junior Red Cross. C49] Choir C50] 2udl and S i lL c.
