M—School opened with an enrollment of 2,650 pupils. Sept. 15—Douglas Lyncss and Marilyn Eckcrstrom were appointed Co-editors of the Southerner. Sept. 25— A seniors elected Willard Fredrickson class president. In the opening game of the season South defeated Marshall 26-0. Oct. 2—South strengthened its hid for the championship as Washburn was defeated 18-0. Oct. 9—The homecoming game resulted in another victory for the Tigers when they whipped Roosevelt 38-0. The homecoming festivities were led by Russell Mork, king, and Evelyn Hansen, queen. Oct. 16—South nosed out West 7-0 in the most hard-fought game of the season. Oct. 23—South’s hopes for the championship rose when Central was beaten 28-6. Oct. 30—Edison’s hope falls before the onslaught of the orange and black in an 18-0 victory. “Talk of the Town,” the annual follies, was presented in the auditorium. Nov. 5—South won the city championship as North was swamped bv a score of 46-0. Nov. 11-17—National Education week was celebrated. Nov. 13—South captured the Twin City championship when they defeated St. Paul Harding 37-0. Nov. 20-21—High school editors convened in Mankato for the state press convention. Marilyn Eckcrstrom placed first in the News Terminology Test. Nov. 22—Bernie Bierman praised football team at Pep fest. Nov. 24—The football team was given a rousing send-off by the students when they left for Lincoln, Nebraska. Nov. 25—An impressive early morning Thanksgiving service was given by the Hi-Y and Triangle clubs in the school. Nov. 26—South drubs Lincoln, Nebraska, to the tunc of 26-6. Tyler Howell was voted the most valuable player by his team mates. Dec. 17—Douglas Lyncss and Marjory Becket took the leads in the senior class play “Tons of Money.” Jan. 7—Eleanor Wcxlcr and Lorraine Hansen received top honors in the graduating class being named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Ian. 15—Twenty-three new members were welcomed into the National Honor Society. Jan. 19—Letter Day—Outstanding students received many awards. Jan. 24—Baccalaureate service for the “A” seniors was held at Wesley Methodist Church. Jan. 28—Commencement exercise was held for 243 members of the January class. Jan. 29—The Senior Prom was held. [58] Calendar of Events Second Semester Feb. 1—The new term began; 412 new students were welcomed to South by the Student Council. Feb. 5—South Cagcrs were defeated 45-22 by Edison. Feb. 11—College aptitude tests were given to A Seniors planning to enter college or the university. New Southerner Stall edits the first Southerner edition of the new term. Feb. 12—South defeated by the North High team, 28 to 27. Feb. 19—South downed Marshall 22-20 in the final basketball game of the season. Feb. 24—For the first time in the history of South High, co-presidents were elected by the graduating class. Clayton Dale anti (ieorge Kachie received the same number of votes for the office. March 5—South defeats St. Paul Central 19-14 in the Inter-City series. March 15—College day observed by the “A” seniors. Representatives from 26 Northwest colleges were present to aid pupils in planning for their education. March 17—The Student Council had business cards printed. April 6-7—'Hie June graduating class sponsored Midsummer Night’s Dream as its class play. April 16—Iris Tag Day; funds were raised to pay freight charges for the books going to the Clinch Valley High School in Tennessee. April 23—Boxing finals were held in the school gym. April 27—Viola Johnson won the original composition contest given in our auditorium. April 29—'ITe student body participated in the first Spring Sing Fest ever held at South. April 30—Tag Day was held to raise money for the spring athletics. May 7—South High Band again won the highest rating in the state music contest. Stanley Frost ad, Robert Northenscold, Martin Segal, and John Sodcrgrcn were awarded an A rating in the quartet division and took part in the National contest in Columbus, Ohio, winning first place. May 18—First annual music festival featuring the South High Band took place in the South High Auditorium. May 21—All City track meet is held at South. June Etta was crowned May Queen. May 25—Letter Day. School letters were distributed to students who were outstanding in activities. May 26—Fifty-one new members were initiated into the National Honor Society. June 2—The 1937 Tigers were distributed. June 6— Baccalaureate Services were held in the Central Lutheran Church. luneK—Senior Picnic was held at Excelsior. June 10—Commencement exercises were held for the members of the June class. June 11— B seniors sponsored a prom for the graduate seniors. 159} (60] .
