On hall duty now is a group of students under the supervision of Mr. Storm and Mr, Pratt, These pupils, who have been recommended as very reliable, are stationed at various places in the halls where they are on duty for one period every day. They keep the halls clear and orderly, check lockers so that none are left open or unlocked, and direct strangers who come into the building. With the. aid of their director, Mr. Abbott, they con- tinued to grow until today it is an organization of ninety-five members with a balance of instruments. This was sponsored by the Minnesota Bandmaster's Association, ot which Mr. Abbott is president. Mr. Griebenow and Mrs. Kirkham directed the production while the gymnasium departments offered their assist- ance. The tirst scene, portraying the colonial period, showed only boys being taught by schoolmasters who vvere quite obviously unprepared in the subjects they taught, The second scene, showing the Civil War period, included girls as students. ln the last scene the modern class room vvas depicted, The A Senior president, Robert Zemple, delivered the class message, and the South ltligh orchestra, under the direction ot Mr. Abbott, played the processional. SCENE FROM COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM A AVERAGE STUDENTS OF JUNE CLASS The observance of the three-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the first American high school, which vvas the theme of the lanuary commencement program, was continued by the lune class in its programs This theme was carried out in the salutatory, the com- mencement address, and the valedictory. The class vvas unique in that South had six graduates, all of vvhom had an A average during their senior high school course. A special feature of the program was a one-act play entitled The Valiant, The program also included a vocal solo, several selections by a mixed quartette, and selections by the South l-ligh school orchestra. The name Torchbearers is taken from the symbol ot a torch which represents the spirit of friendship and the bearer signifies the girls belonging to the club striving to hold up its ideals. This party is held in the school library. Another term-affair is the senior farewell party given by the B senior girls for the graduating members. The election of new officers for the Torchbearer club was held February 20. The club's initiation party for new mem- bers was held February 26 and was a Hobo party. This was sponsored for all new B freshmen and B sopho- mores. The presidents of all the clubs were introduced and each pupil was presented with a handbook of information on South High, Mr. Severson and Mr. lvlcliusick gave them a formal welcome and the cheer- leaders acquainted them with a few of the yells. The girls of this club also have charge of the girls' rest-rooms. They have furnished them with the pro- ceeds from selling homecoming banners and from the Valentine sunlite. The Girls Athletic Association of South High was founded in l9l4. Since then, this club has rapidly developed and is now one of the largest in the school. Its main objective is to create interest in athletics, to teach the girls good sportsmanship and co-operation, and to develop leadership. Members ot the club par- ticipate in a variety of sports including soccer, volley- ball, diamond-ball, basketball, track, hiking and tennis. Points are awarded according to merit. For the first lOO points a numeral is awarded. An S letter is awarded to those girls who receive 600 points and an all-city emblem to those receiving l,OOO points. The rules allowed only students who would be eligible for play next year to participate. ln this way Coach Barnard was able to get some idea as to the quality ot his material tor next year. This year the Norwegians rode through their opposi- tion to the championship, Their games with the Swedes, champions of last year, and with the Bohemians in the final game were hard-earned vic- tories. Among those who were high point winners for the Norwegians were Bob Russ, Bill Thompson, Clitt Kalvness. The tinal standings ot the tournament this year found the Norwegians leading the tield. Second place went to the Bohemian team, and third place to the Negroes, and the fourth place to the Germans. Winners ot the consolation meets were the English. About thirty men were finally chosen for more intensive training in the various departments ot the sport. Graduation had taken a heavy toll of veterans, but the squad was no less enthusiastic or optimistic 'ot a successful season. This year the squad was in charge of a new coach, Mr. Buckman. Only a limited number ot meets were scheduled for the Orange and Black squad this year. Its first one was the Annual Indoor Metropolitan Meet held at the University of Minnesota. Other meets were com- petitions with squads ot other city high schools on their own tields. The squad this year was strongest in short dashes. Such expert racket swingers as Edward Lund, larrvy Ginsberg, and Walter Burry, all of them three year men, encouraged Coach Blumer to entertain hopes of a championship. The Tiger tennis men last year, a season ot many upsets, tied for second place with Washburn but this year were in high hopes of dislodging Central as champions of the prep league. Golf season this year was scheduled to open April l5. Regulars of former seasons, headed by Earl Lottstrom and Irving Wass, were back for another season's com- petition under the tutelage of Coach Swarstad. Can- didates tor the team will by medal play, and the low eight men will be eligible for the team. The four match winners will constitute the regulars. Last season the Tigers closed competition in seventh place, but with so many of the regulars back this year, a better season is in prospect. In addition to these contests they gave a demonstra- tion ot their talents at a meeting of the Parents and Teachers Association and between acts ot the oper- etta. The Tigermen have kept the class C champ- ionship tor two consecutive years. This year it was won by Arne O'Dell, and last year it was won by Wilmer Comer. Kenneth Lotdahl and Arne O'Dell are South's best prospects tor next year. Captain Wilmer Comer boasts a record that ranks him with the best. When auditions were held this year tor rooter kings, the students were permitted to vote for three boys and for three girls. Eight teams participated in the tournament this year, one for each class semester. The contest was won by the B senior team on which were Flora lacobs, Faye Huntington, Mildred Fredeen, Dorothy Plantz, Mildred Luttman, Rosanna Robison, Agnes Berg, Catherine Cross, Elsie Lestor, Libby Ann Dols, and Ragna Wick, captain. The name of the winning team is annually engraved on a soccer cup which was presented in l93O by the junior class. Ever since it was first introduced, basketball has in- creased in popularity. This year sixteen teams entered the tournament and it was necessary to have an elimination-consolation tournament. ln this sport, too, the B senior team won the championship. The A sophomores were champions of Section B and the A seniors of Section A. The principal sport in spring is diamondball, This year eight teams were entered in the tournament, two representing each class.
