ROBERT WILLIAMS The job of counseling the students of South belongs chiefly to Mr. Wil- liams, our pupil personnel director. His duties consist of helping the stu- dents make their four-year programs, checking graduation requirements, and mainly guiding the future of the students. His jovial personality and excellent advice make a visit to his -W ' .i' '55 5 .g s Vsse MISS MAIIJORIE SI-IEPARD Miss Shepard. in her task of as- sistant principal. is an important figure in our school. She had done much to improve the junior high school program, She is in charge of instructions and also the in-service training program. Through this plan, teachers that need further college work receive it while teaching school at the same time. After teaching in the English Department for several years, Miss Shepard. became the pupil person- nel director in 19-Il. In this ea- pacity she established a fine coun- seling program which received wide recognition. She later helped other schools in forming this type of program, since it was so sue- cessful at South. Her energy and pleasant per- sonality have endeared her to all the students at South. Miss Shepard is truly an asset to South High. ., fi office both pleasant and informative. MR. SHERMAN CORYEll Under the firm but fair control and guidance of our principal, Mr. Coryell, South High has operated efficiently for many years. He has held this demanding position since he came to South in 1940. He had previous experience teaching in Alpena, Lansing and Grand Rap- ids Central. One of Mr. Coryell's main re- sponsibilities is to co-ordinate the many phases of our school. His uniting the teachers into a co-op- erative group better enables them to perform their duties for the ben- efit of their students and the school. When school affairs operate well on their own, Mr. Coryell doesn't interfere. However, when his experience and guidance are needed, they are freely given. Mr. Coryell is a quiet man. He speaks softly, but with firm con- victions. He has a pleasing person- ality and an understanding of human nature. The students of South salute this man upon whom the present and future and South High is dependent. OFFICE STAFF Miss Jean Bo aski Mrs. Gertrude g'yma The office is probably the busiest place at South High. The staff keeps all the records, sends transcripts to colleges, and keeps track of school supplies. These are only a few of their duties. As one of the workers said, What is there that we don't do? The weekly meetings afford mem- bers an opportunity for fellowship with other Latin students. This year the Latin Club's major activity was the distribution of student pictures. The students enjoyed trading these pictures for those of their friends. The club also sponsored an after-game dance. The climax of the year was a party held for all members. Officers for the first semester were: Joe Vicari, Presidentg Sue Duyser, Vice-Presidentg and John Darling, Treasurer. Officers for the second semester were: Joan Ten Hoor, Presidentg Mike Rumps, Vice-Presidentg and Steve Patterson, Treasurer. Mary Sieswerda was Secretary for both semesters. The men worked hard but didn't have as mueh weight as the opposing teams. Ont tie with Muskegon Heights was a moral vietory. Both teams made touchdowns in the first minutes of the game. Wve then eooled off and they marehed down the field for another touehdown. The seore was then 14-7 which they kept until the last five minutes of the game. We made a touehdown and the extra point thus tieing the game 11-11. Our first win was against Godwin. another nonleague game. Our homecoming game. however. was the most rewarding vietory. lt rained. snowed, and sleeted. adding to the exeitement of the game. Creston made a had passg we took advantage of the situation and scored in the last ten seeonds of the game's second quarter. No more touehdowns were made in the remainder of the game. ln the 1960 season, all lvoys are invited to go out for football. No one will he eut, unless his marks warrant it. It is up to eaeh man to work hard and heeome the lrest player he can. The eoaches and returning letter men look forward to a prosperous 1960 foothall season. 86 Q Q 'CO 'ff I 1. b '25 4' C 5 as 'E,1ji-AE? in 'uf 3 95 F 94 5'5fg5L ifgl-:ig 1975 7 gf 42,3144 unit fl' QQ 5-ww . .is4?-xb fi' HRW. , .. , ,, , 51: ,l. llnillly. The Grand Rapids area sent three teams to the semi-finals at Lansing. Class A was Sontlig Class B, Codwing and Class C, was Lee. Our first game of the Season was with Lansing Sexton., the then defending champions. in which we lost hy a score of 65 to 72. The only league game we lost was to Christian by a score of 69 to 62. In, district play, we downed Christian 79 to 65. which entitled us to enter regional play where we met Catholic. The score of that game was a close 55 to 53 with South as the victor. We were then up against a highly rated Muskegon High quintet, but the Blue and lied came out on top again hy 65 to 4-3. in the quarter- finals, held at the Lansing Civic Center, we defeated Flint Southwestern hy a score of 57 to 51. The final game of the season was played at Jennison l ield House located on the Michigan State University campus. A capacity crowd of 12,500 people were there to witness the game. With the score 2fl to 27 at the half, our opponents, Lansing Sexton, suddenly pulled away by the use of a full court press. From this time on it was Lansingls game. The game ended with a score of 52 to 60. Wie were defeated hy the team who on the next night took the state Class A championship for the second year in a row.
