Kathreen Emery has spent much of a lifetime developing in children a love of beautiful things. Art as she has often expressed it herself is fun , This joy in art is reflected in her students because she herself is such a true artist. Because of her true love of children she has been able to make each feel he too is an artist even in a small way. MISS CLARA YNTEMA Those having Iorfhey will pau lhem on fo others. Clara Yntema has assed many torches on to a host of studjaits during her career. Her serenity pervades the classroomg her friendliness reaches out a kind handg her inspiration for honest work has been a strong influence in the shaping of careers. Her torches of high standards and service have been caught by many students who have gone on to positions of leadership. In her years at South High School, it is difficult to count the people who have been touched by her example. The club was organized in the fall of 1957 and included the member- ship of one French class at South- High at that time. In the fall of 1958, a second group of students who are now taking first year French came into the club. Now there are two groups of students in the club. With the helpful advice of their sponsor, Mrs. Kerr, members of the French Club spent a most enjoyable year in carrying out their numerous activities. They packed three boxes to send overseas to needy families in Rouen France They participated in inter national correspondence with students in France and exchanged cultural souvenirs Luncheon meetings were held featuring French foods Officers of the second year group were Elke Schroeter president Carol Elferdink vice president Margaret Huber secretary Officers of the first year group were Marlame Soules president Dan Humphreys vice president and Carole Steeby secretary Marsi TenHoor was treasurer of both groups Carol Elferdink shows Paul Swierenga and Marcia LeFluer a letter and some snapshots from a family in France with whom she has been corre sponding This summer Carol will visit the family She began torre sponding wlth them through a French Club activitiy I First Row S Green M Huber E Sthroetei S Cole j Armstrong C Elferdxnk J Chase C Bonthuis S Plasman Second Row M Soules J Custer M Beerhorst C Hitchcock J Fikkert G McGrath J TenRaa G Williamson L Tromp G johnson Mrs Kerr 'lhird Row K Young M Pridgeon j TenHoor K Hagen D Fowler B DeRuiter S Emmert C Steeby M LaFluer M TenHoor 60 MMO Pnl! The SENIOR USHERS CLUB has had a very successful year at South High. The club has rendered great service to South by helping to keep our assemblies orderly. Some of the boys take various posts in the halls while students pass to the assemblies, and others guide and seat them in the auditorium. The club takes full responsibility and does a fine job of making passage to assemblies quick and smooth. Keep up the good work, fellows! The only requirements for membership are that the students be male fcouldn't there be some exceptions?J and that he be either a junior or a senior. They started the season by defeating Ottawa 25-33. The rest of the season was unsuccessful scorewise, This year's seniors were Mike Smith, jerry Sisson, Phil Hall, and Dick Nelson. Next year we will hope for a better season Coach Veenkamp says, Even though we didn't do so well this past year, the boys gained experience. This ears squad will form the backbone of next year's. The as- sembly met in the boys gymnasium so that the boys on the team could go through their paces. The assembly served well to enhance the morale of the team, to heighten student spirit, and to encourage students' attendance at the games. The ball in the picture is suspended in mid air afraid to come down and face the mighty Trojan bas- ketball team. The players look up, anxiously awaiting the return of the ball to the playing floor.
