Our Book of Seasons The passage of time is recorded in various ways. Our high school years are measured by seasons and activities. Autumn came-we had hardly caught our breath after a fast and furious summer vacation when the leaves began to turn, and the air became nippy. It was time to get back to school, to enroll in new classes, to meet new teachers and students, and to renew old ac- quaintances, among the faculty and the student body. The football season opened, and We got a chance to see nine colorful games. The highlight of autumn, however, was the beautiful Homecoming. Winter came- the basketball season opened. Classes and clubs were organized. We got into the swing of winter parties and dances. And finally spring came-a great number of boys were involved in athletics because of the large variety of sports. They participated in baseball, track, golf, and tennis. Commencement - the highlight of the Whole year was here. It was the beginning. This is a recorded history of our last year in high school. 5 FALL ESQ. I like the fall, The mist and all. I like the night owl's Lonely call - And wailing sound Of wind around. I like - The bafre, dead boughs That coldly sway Against my pane. I like the rain. I like to sit And laugh at it- And tend My cozy fire a bit. I like the fall- The mist and all - The Mist and All DIXIE WILLSON ,v la YJ., F if .IO O S ' x, Y A 'K bf. 4 ao'f'-5 , MVIS.-e 'f' l . We opened the season meeting Creston at Indian Trails Golf course, with a victory. The next victory was over Catholic. After this the Trojans couldn't get rolling and wound up in fifth place. A few of the harriers were returning from last year with letters. They are John Duiven, Basil Halkides, Bill Berevics, Carl Van Heck, and Tom Meek. Also deserving a lot of credit is Mr. Veenkamp, who has done a wonderful job coaching. ' lst Row Klvft to Mglzfj 4.1. Tiffany, T. Meek, J. Brott, D, V E R. W 'd. S d Bag: B. Brent, B. Halkides, T. Sparked by the brilliant running of South's pony backfield and superb defense, the men of Troy humbled the threatening passing at- tack of the Indians. This victory proved South to be a serious threat to the city crown. i 0 if-1 Coaches South-Catholic For the first time this season the men of Troy went down to defeat against a big Catholic Central team. South played Catholic to a tie for three quarters and with only three minutes left in the game, Cath- olic intercepted a pass and marched for the tie breaking score. Returning from last year are head coach Don Schriemer and backfield coach John Rybock. They have done an outstanding job with the team this year, just as they have done in the past. South will look forward to having them back next year. South - Union ,,,. .. ,., J.,-1 1'3 . 5 1 i . f - I , ,,,, . . ,Y - . is ,N V . ' - w South - Central In a breath-taking gridiron battle, the South High Tro- jans fought the Central Hill- toppers to a 0-0 tie. The Trojans had control of the ball most of the time. Along with a few bad breaks and a couple of fumbles, South was unable to score. The South High Trojans went down valiantly in a nip and tuck battle with Union High School's Redhawks. The game was a heart-breaker for the light, upset minded Trojans to lose. The boys fought hard and can be proud of the way they played. The final result left South on the short end of a 21-13 score. South - Creston South High's spirited Trojans romped to a 20-0 victory over the much improved Creston Polar Bears. South dominated the play throughout the game and were seldom threatened. After a slow first half, South suddenly came to life. Before the men of Troy were stopped, they had scored a total of 20 points. 23 .,g,?7,?51f1q, 1- 4, 0114 k+?5'eZwMj?f , K. -1 :.:gQ,2.!n ,gb A -F 5 ll ff' ,X I7 w.,. - I ' f 5 . . ff 5. ff ,4 Gil Lyon D Cfullbackj on '00 'A A W N x f J it I IA 3 F N Bob Van Dyke fendj f ' r , ig: 35' 1, 122909 ll 1 I ,'f'r wif' f' Vf ,4 C-'e617 ipQf4Ip.i' 9,919 40 1 Q: 1' ' ' 4 f ' iff: I, X, ,744 NNN! Richard Otzman fFullbaclcj The Little Trojans had a very successful season, and ended up in a dead- lock with Catholic for city championship. Under the fine coaching of Mr. Murphy the Little Trojans marched through the season with only one de- feat. Catholic handed them this defeat in, rain, snow, and mud. There will be plenty of action shown by these athletes next year. South's frosh had a rough time this year. They ran up against much bigger and much faster teams. The frosh didn't let that bother them as they beat Ottawa 14-2 with Tucker and Di Piazza scoring. South lost to Central 15-0, and then defeated Creston 19-13, with Woody and Tucker scoring. Next South dropped a terrific battle to Catholic 14-0, and came back to roll over Union 7-0 with Tucker scoring. 29 Y 2nd Row: Tom Wisner Chuck Rowe Tom Southwell Court: Ist Row Joan Clmgm Allce Fltch Barbara. 'A Larry G1-ootel-S Mike Murphy Tom Southwell fCenter1 fC00-Chl I Center 1 The 1954-55 basketball season opened rather dismally for the South High Trojans. Playing on the Catholic Central fioor, the Trojans dropped a 59-52 decision to a hard- fighting band of Cougars. The first home game was a different story. The Trojans displayed a torrid fast break to defeat Union, 75-56. Two out of town opponents fell to the im- proving cagers. Traverse City lost, 81-48g and Kalamazoo State High was beaten 55-52. Against the league-leading Christian Eagles, the Trojans had one bad period, and lost, 59-46. Again the Trojans hit the victory trail, however, with successive victories over Creston and Central. Ottawa Hills showed championship form in defeating South 68- 64. In the second Traverse City contest, South was way off and dropped a 64-60 decision. The biggest loss of the year came through mid-year graduation. Andy Davidovich and Wendall Watts graduated and left a big gap in the South line-up. Even without them, South showed a fighting brand of basketball. In one of the finest games of the season, the Trojans outlasted Catholic Central, and won a 71-69 overtime contest. The Trojans lost a 52-48 decision to Union. Three successive losses followed, but a bril- liant rally in the last forty-seven seconds of the Central game broke the streak. In the final game of the season, when the Ottawa Hills ball club was crowned champions, South lost, 70-53. Following the loss to Ottawa, the Trojans prepared to meet the Big Reds from Muske- gon in their first tournament game. It was a brilliant game for South who won by a 61- 44 count. Catholic was the next foe for the fiery cagers. South won again, 48-45. The defending state champions, Muskegon Heights put on a last quarter burst to down the Trojans, 49-33. South finished the season with a 7-8 rec- ord. They looked brilliant at times, but spotty at others. Their only losses through gradu- ation were Meyers, Thomasma, Patterson, and Southwell. The future basketball years at South look very bright. vw 'X mi C- Reserve Baislcefbaill Front Row flmft to rightjr Jerry Scully, Jim Strictland, YVayne Beld, Dave Hahn, Hill llitti-rim-i', Ga-oi'g'v Rullis, Dave Traste-V, Mr. Gengei' CCoachj. Swimming A new incentive was given to the members of the swimming team this season. After one trial season, the city athletic directors decided to make swimming a major sport, qualifying it as a part of the possible point total in the race for the All Sports Trophy. Mr. Van Oeveren was named successor to Mr. Loomis and Mr. Richmond, last season's coaches. He was greeted with a large number of inexperienced underclassmen and only two, seniors. He had a big job in rounding the team into shape for the first meet. The Y.M.C.A. pool was the scene of the city league meets. Union was the first opponent. The Trojans looked very strong in whipping the Red Hawks, 40-35. In the next meet, the city champions, the Christian Eagles, displayed a well-balanced team and swamped the Trojans, 54-21. Catholic Central faced South in the next meet. South was defeated, 45-40. Creston and South proved to be two evenly matched teams, as South took a one point vic- tory, 36-5. The season was climaxed with two succesive losses to Central and Ottawa. The Trojan swimmers finished the season with two wins and four losses. Jack Higley and Karl Lie- bert were the only graduating seniors, so the team can look forward to a number of success- ful seasons, with many of the boys coming back for two years. 131 PRI The year's at the spring And the day's at the morng Morning's at seveng The hillsidels dew-pearledg The lark's on the wingg The sna,il's on the thorn: God's in his heaven - All's right with the world! '4 Varsity Baseball -in-A J The South High Trojans appear to have a good baseball team, and they will be a serious threat for the city championship. The team is well balanced as far as hitting, fielding, and catching, but there is a slight gap in the pitching, with the exception of Tom Wisner, a returning all city pitcher. Returning from last year are pitchers, Tom VVisner, and Jim Little, outfieldersg Jack Gerard, Jerry Britton, Chuck Rowe, and Andy Anderson, lst base, Larry Dalson, and Dave Hinckley, 2nd, base, Ray Sack, 3rd base, Bob Van Dyke, shortstop, LeRoy Davis, and Ernie Davis, catchers, Ron Insley and Don Lundy. South has a lot of players which will be returning next year, and they will play an important part in the success of future sports. Follow- ing a disappointing fourth in last year's standings, the Trojans looked forward to im- proving that record, Mr. Taylor succeeded Mr. Williams as coach and was greeted with four returning lotta-rmen. They included Howard Konwinski, Toby Meyers, Tom Danker, and Allen Holmes. The team compared favorably with the rest of the teams in a strong city league. Ottawa Hills, Union, Central, and South loomed as the strongest teams in the league, with no definite favorite. Probably the biggest problem of the team was the lack of underclassmen. The majority of the members were seniors, and were lost in June graduation. vi N far.. i X , ' 1 f, fi si. o ' ' , A at 4 Lvft to Right - Mr. Taylor, coachg Bob. Returning' from last year's squad were John Buttrey, John Auzins, Jim Archer, Pete Patterson, Terry Albrecht, Dick Kragt, and Ed Plafkin. Team strength was also insured by a laie number of outstanding newcomers. Ch1'istian, Ottawa, and South looked exceptionally strong in practice, and had lost little through graduation. They were counted 'on as the teams to beat in the city league. As in golf, the tennis team was awarded points toward the All Sports Trophy only in City League standing and not in the regionals. Of the returning lettermen, John Auzins, Jim Archer, Pete Patterson, Terry Al- brecht, and Dick Kragt were lost in graduation. First Row, left to right - T. Fitch, R. Williams, L. Albrecht, T.
