Stricken by rheumatic fever early in the fall, he was unable to continue his studies at South in 1941. He entered our school from Burton High in the tenth grade and was very active in the sophomore class of 1940. As a member of the class, he served on many committees and helped to keep the class going with his cheery chatter and happy ways. lack Was a great lover of both modern and classical music and had a large collection of records Which he valued highly. He also Was a collector of coins and stamps. His presence was greatly missed by all of us, for he had many friends in our class. Gods finger touched him, and he slept. - Tennyson. Harold Vineyard Harold Vineyard, Who died luly 9, 1940, was born in Oklahoma in 1924. A few years later he moved to West Virginia where he spent most of his life. South. master of the game throughout the day, rolled up 11 first downs while Flint got six, three of which were in the final stanza. Piatt has Field Day Piatt, ace of the Trojan back- field and the city's fastest ball car- rier, had a tield day in reeling olf long gains and intercepting passes. South High's Trojans, defending champions in the city football race, Saturday afternoon spotted the bulky Ottawa Hills cleven a touch- down in the First five minutes of play and then roared back to chalk up two in the final quarter to de- feat the Indians, 13 to 6, at House- man field. The largest Saturday afternoon crowd of the year wit- nessed the game. South, starting slowly in the first half, was completely outplayvd in every department and only lack of' punch on the part of the Indians kept the Tribe to a lone score. In the last stanza it was an entirely different story when the Trojans opened up and jammed an-ross its two tallies with Piatt and Clark lugging' the ball. Traverse City -- Outweighed and at times outplayed by Traverse City's scrappy class B team, Grand Rapids South High grid team squeezed out a 12-6 victory in the opening game for both schools on Thirlby field here Friday night. The Grand Rapids city champions combined swift plunges and off- taekle slants with wide end runs and occasional fiat snap passes over the scrimmage line to defeat Trav- erse City, but the teams appeared evenly matched throughout the con- test, with Traverse City's air at- tack and tackle rushes particularly eiective. It took the Trojans of South al- most four full quarters to batter a light but fighting Tech eleven into submission. The defending city champions threatened several times throughout the contest but were unable to crack the Wildcat de- fense. which stiffened in the clutch. Finally with but four minutes to play. Leatherman, slight little Tro- jan back, punched the ball over from the 10-yard line on a play over the 'I'ech guard position for the only score of the contest. The winning play was made possible by the stellar work of Capt. Delton Clark and Max Piatt, who battered their way down to within striking distance of pay dirt. Boughner. The Trojans have also lreaten Tech and Ottawa, South's performance Saturday night was anything but sensational. It duplicated an identical win over Ottawa in that the Trojans looked like anything but a championship team in the first half while the big- gest crowd of the season watched the title-bent Hilltoppcrs roam over the tield at will hut still holding only a 6-tl lead at the half. A muddy tield turned what prob- ably would have been a free-scoring contest into a scoreless deadlock Friday night as South and Creston slopped up and down the House-man field gridiron in their city cham- pionship game. While the contest didn't prove a thing about the relative strength of the two opponents fn- except that they were pretty evenly matched on the soggy field the tie virtually assured Creston of the second place niche in the city prep league stand- ings, and at the same time virtually assured South ol' another gridiron title. Creston wound up its season Fri- day night, but the Trojans have two games left to play. Morse, Dick Provenzano, Joe Norin, Boh Stelleni, Sam Paulsen. Frank Throckmorton. Kenneth Pellerito. And after the first hall'-dozen plays had been run oll' even the Cougars appeared convinced that they were looking at a brand of foothall the like of which they had not seen all season: power which could not he denied. Some 7.500 wild-eyed football fans braved the intermittent rain of Thanksgiving day afternoon to watch the smooth-stepping South High grid machine roll in two quick waves to smother the Union Red Hawks, l2 to ll, in the annual Turkey day classic between the schools. After liattling lietwcen the 30-yard stripes for the lirst, two periods ot' the contest. the dam- pened speetators settled hack at halftime convinced they were going to witness a scoreless deadlock. Wyoming 1 Lee 5 Tech 0 Kalamazoo 2 Ottawa 1 Christian 8 Central 1 Catholic 9 Creston 11 Union 2 Baseball The baseball season got under way the first of April with the pitchers and catchers practicing in the boys' gym. Later, weather permitting, the team, under the careful guid- ance of Coach Vanderbush, held practice and played inter squad games at Garfield park, It was found that several boys could play two positions equally well, and accorde ingly Bob Keena, a sophomore, first base- man, was converted into an extremely effective pitcher, and when the regular catcher was injured, Dick LaBrenz, fielder and excellent pitcher was placed in the re- ceiving position for a few games. ln the first game the Trojans slugged out a five to one decision over Wyoming Park, but the following day the Lee nine upset them five to four, The next game saw South come out on top of a ten to nothing count over the Tech Vlfildcats, defending city champs, but at Kalamazoo, South lost two to one and then dropped a one to nothing game to Ottawa, The game with Grand Haven was postponed because of rain and was to be played later, but as circumstances would not allow, it was called off. The following games saw South victorious over Christian, Central and Creston while Catholic Central and Union won. Track Again this year South's thinclads com- pleted their season undefeated, roaring to victory in the city meet tor the second suc- cessive year. Graduation last year made the teams prospects look bad at the begin- ning ot the season, hut undaunted Mr. Churm, veteran of many years, molded each boy into fine physical and mental shape endowing him with experience. South seemed much stronger in the high jump, broad jump, and shot-put than in the running events this year, but many line speedsters showed up during the season. Session room 235 Won the intersession room meet this year tor the first time in many years. ln the invitational meet involv- ing tive other schools, South piled up lO2yQ points while the others totaled 8656. Central was the Trojans next victim and in a guadrangular meet South defeated Union, Ottawa, and Catholic Central. ln the Mt. Pleasant relays South tied tor tirst in the high jump, and annexed tirst place in the shot put. With this impressive season be- hind them the Trojans headed tor the state meet at East Lansing with hopes ot bringing back new trophies tor the trophy case. The only singles regular back from last year retained the number one singles berth, and a new boy qualified for the number two singles spot. Boys back from last year and new boys were paired off into effective doubles teams and few matches were lost on their account. At the time of the regionals the team had won two and lost three with two matches to play that had been poste poned. Row One: Jack Blake, Lynn Coil, Lewis Wood, Gale Boughner. Row Two: Coach DeKOStvr, Laham Mitchel, Don Goldberg, Phil Young- blood, Phil Semyn, Harold Armstrong. Golf Mr. Patterson faced quite a problem this year as he had only one regular back from last year to work with, but from the boys who turned out for practice, he picked six who did quite well on the green. Each match was played on a different course, and in the first match with Tech at Blythfield South won three out of four matches. Ottawa won all four matches in the next encounter, and then South won four from Christian. The rest of the matches were about evenly balanced as to wins and losses, but the fellows turned hopefully to the regionals in which they hoped to annex just honors for the school.
