Litton Genial in his manner, patient in every task, sincere to every purf pose, striving ever upward, respected by all his colleagues, masterly in his technique, friendly to all who partake his glance, sharing his every resource, loved by all who know him -this is our Glenn Litton. As we set Out upon the long journey ahead, it gives us pleasure to pause in tribute to one who has successfully gone before us and who serves as a willing and experienced guide, ready to use his experience for our guidance and profit. In the many years we have known him, he has always been our friend: through bands and orchestras which he has produced, he has brought lasting fame to our school: and in his life he has been a worthy example for us to follow. XVe are proud of his acquaintance and friendship, we are proud of the example his life has been for us: we are proud to dedicate this yearbook to one who so nearly fulfils those ideals to which this book is dedicated: we are proud of Glenn B. Litton. Vox PCP The meeting will now come to order, shouts Rohert Goldherg, lifting his voice to he heard ahoye the rahhle of the crowd. Boh and Verna Grooters were elected president and secretary ref spectiyely of the Student Council at an allfliigh school caucus held in Iviay, 1938. The president, secretary, and citi:enship chair' man for '39540 were elected the second Wediiesf day in Iviay this year at a similar assemhly. The campaigning done this year hy yarious candidates was almost as colorful as the campaigns hefore the senior elections, especially Williani Kloosterman's tour of the nation. -vu Y-TT! you OFFICERS Thirtytwo prominent senior hoys constituted the first memhership in the Ushers Cluh which was originated hy the Student Council this year. This group executed 'various plans of entering the auditorium for assemhlies. These plans were created hy the ushers in conjunction with the asf semhly hoard. Asseinhlies were planned and selected hy the assemhly hoard with the cooperation of Mr. Lester C. Doerr. :X group of fifteen Npaidu assemhlies were engaged for the school year. A few of the outstanding ones were a concert hy a gypsy orchesf tra from Detroit, an hour of entertainment hx' s 1 Y s ' Row One: VV. Abraham. J. Ahiuihnni, Czunp. Wukenvlil, Xhillit-lt. For the first time all students on hall duty were called together by the council to discuss problems and their solutions. The constitution was revised so that the citizenship chairman would be elected in the spring, thus making it easier to organize a smoothfworking hall system the first week of school. The constitution was also amended so it would be more democratic in representation and so stu' dents would have a better chance to participate. At least one member from each session room is elected in the fall. Every club and almost every student participated in the annual Kopper Karnival which was extremef ly successful this year. One of the first editorials which brought about a noticeable result this year was Keep the Homecoming Clean. Though it aroused the ire of some alumni, they took immediate action and the 1938 Homecoming was characterized by some of the most civilized behavior in years. Out of the Homecoming Shambles came another thought. For this occasion, and various other shows where home talent is desired, some sort of a bureau which would have information concerning theatrical ability available is needed. After the Tattler ran an edif torial explaining this need, the student council estabf lished a talent bureau. In order that the school dances would be better patronized, a boys' dancing class grew out of a plea from the school paper, However at one of the dances, incif dentally the most popular one of the season, the dire tragedy of having the decorations torn down half way through the party brought exelamations of anger from the staff. An editorial resulted and the decorations ref mained untouched at the next dance. Ittttlvr BOSSES W,-, Seated: Kleiman, Everetts, Hauer, Seibers. As leaders they chose the following: president, Carroll yan l-lartesveldtg vicefpresif dent, George Wallickg secretary, Donna Kelf ler: treasurer, Evelin Treiber: student adf visers, Betty Boyd, Glennys Baker, and Merl Swanng and faculty advisers, Miss Evangeline Morrisey and Mr. O. H. Schopmeyer. The three main parties of the year were great successes. The junior jam was held in December under the direction of Wiilter Schroth and his committee, consisting of Frances Witter, Betty Boyd, jane Doerr, Paul johnson, james Bolton, and Peter Limber, The boys' gym was turned into a penthouse for the .lfl'lop on Mzirch 4. This dance was under the chairmanship of Mary Lou Lietlers. The traditional -IuniorfSenior Mixer, held Mr. O. H, Schopme-yer, Miss Evangeline Morrisi-y. in Ivlay, drew a large and enthusiastic crowd for roller skating and dancing. The timely theme for this event was a series of scenes depicting the Wcmrld's Fair. The junior chairf man, Verna Grooters, along with her com' mittee, cooperated with the seniors in lixing up and cleaning up before and after. ln addition to these, the class also particif patcd in the school's annual Kopper Karnival, Ed johnson, chairman, assisted by Wyoliit Buck, Patty Saurman, jean Whitford, Ralph Wiikeiield, Bill Kloosterman, and Peter Limf ber, planned the booth which featured dart throwing and sling shots. Beside the money made by this feature, another source of revenue was the sale of magic slates, At the end of the year, juniors voted upon their class rings, and began ordering them. Class members cooperated enthusiastically when making plans for a booth at the Kopper Karnival. They worked willingly with their cofchairmen jack McCormick and Paul Leatherman to make a success of the booth which was a lcarn'your-own- strength and hitfthefman-onfthe-head combination. Crowds were continually. drawn by the talents in the art of hawking which were exhibited by the many students taking turns at the money-making booth. Their efforts resulted in a financial success. A western atmosphere pervaded the boys gym on April 29 when the sophomores presented the Rancho Rodeo their annual party. A corral the hanging of a horse thief dummy prairie dogs and root beer served from a bar were the very noxel and original ideas carried out to make the party a success. Mary Quinn and Reno Oifringa were gen' eral chairmen and sophomores in the art depart' ment contributed generously with posters for pub' licity Both class members and upperclassmen en tered into the western spirit by donning overalls and riding breeches to carry out the theme Thcir one allotted pany given and the Kopper Karnival over the sophomores centered their en' thusiasm on an advertising campaign to introduce the new five-column Tattler. ln the early hours before classes art students could be seen placing signs in advantageous spots to catch the eye. Sevf eral members sought posts which were not covered by the regular salesmen on Friday morning and increased sales were evident with the first issue of the new paper. Informal entertainment by talented members of the class was the general plan for amusement at thc vxellfattended meetings held the Hrst and third Wcdnesday of every month. Football lt looked as though Coach Cliff Cettings were using his last year at South to bring home another city championship. Although we lost Captain Pete Mitchell early in the season and several others as time went on, there was always someone to fill the places and make up in spirit what he lacked in skill. Fighting hard to retain a title chance, we literally went mad in the Ottawa game when, after trailing most of the way, the fellows completed a pass in the last thirty seconds of play to tie the game and make the Union game the deciding one in the city championship race. ln this contest we made an early touchdown, hut their stronger team gave Union the victory when a heavy blizzard spoiled our passing attack upon which we had counted strongly. With the defeat went the Union' South little red jug for the first time. We finished second in the city race. Seven of the varsity made the Herald and Press allfcity teams and one, acting Captain .lack Tunis, was elected to the allfstate sec' ond team. South . . South South South South South South . . Track After a close victory over Union in the annual night mcct had marked the last of a series of dual meets in which we had successfully defended our record of only one loss of a dual meet in the hisf tory of our school, and after taking third in the Mt. Pleasant relays, we were ready to defend our championship title in the city meet. We had won eight of the twelve city meets. The end of a thrill' packed meet found us standing second as a result of a loss in the 880 relay. Our SSO relay team had won in every city meet and at Mt. Pleasant, but through an error in assigning their starting posif tions one of our men had to run much farther than he should have, and, consequently, the team took only fourth, not qualifying for the state meet. Two schools and the athletic oilicials refused a refrun to rectify the error, so we lost our title, with protest. We took an easy first in the annual novice meet, which we have won every year. Baseball This year's baseball lured about 103 fellows, but only 25 were retained for the team. These 25 com' prised two teams. One, the reserves, maintained a schedule of their own, Coach Gettings and the nine veterans from last year were at once faced with the difficult record they were to maintain. Since the sport started in Grand Rapids five years ago we have captured the city title each time, never having lost a city game. This year's schedule conf sisted of games with the seven city schools and one with Kalamazoo, The hoys got a good start against Christian High, winning the game hy the score of 641, led hy the nofhit, nofrun pitching of Harry Camp. hut against Central we lost, although pitcher Boh Burns had thirteen strikeouts to his credit. and fourteen men were left on bases. From then on we had tough going, and lost our succeed' ing games. Thus, the title was not ours and our record has stopped, hut all good things must end. Schedule and Scores South . . 4 Christian . . Tennis Although they did not lose one match during the seasons play, the tennis team took second place in the city standing because of a new method of counting matches. Neither the number one nor the number two man, Floyd Johnson nor Paul Saurman, lost a match in the city competition. It was quite a different story, however, in the ref gionals because the Trojans, running into a bit of tough luck during two of their matches, had to be satisfied with a fourth place. Mr. Lester DeKoster, the coach, has a wealth of material back for next year's team because Paul Saurf man and Bob Goldberg are the only seniors who were on the team. Golf The members of the golf team have ample opportunity to strut their stutf. Our city race is run off with matches with each local school, every match be' ing played at a diiferent course, and a regional tournament. The top four fin this contestj compete in the state finals. The fellows play in foursomes, two from each school, The team is coached by Mr. Patterson. Last year we finished in sixth place. Front Row: Don Howick, Floyd Johnson, Paul Saurman. Louie Rutledge. Row Two: Bob Whitman, Bob Goldberg, Ted Ball. Coach Lester DeKoster. Second Team Football The second football team won third place in the race under the guidance of Mr. Brady. Probably more fellows played on this team than on any other school's, for Mr. Brady is willing to give each and every boy a chance. The purpose of this team is to provide experience for the future varsity. Second Team Baslcetball Mr. Brady also coached the sec' ond basketball team. Since the purpose of this team, too, is to give needed experience, each fel' , low has his chance in the games. ' The team finished in third place in its city schedule. grit' V45 Jeflfiii .4 g as 0 gg! Guys Away The Girls' Athletic Association got oif to a line start with the election of some very capable girls as its officers. Letty Hornback was chosen presif dentg Patricia Barnes, secretaryg and Barbara Sehf ler, treasurer. Allaine Mae Wolfe was appointed activity chairman for the school year. Breaking all precedents, the Girls' Athletic Meet was held at the end of the Hrst semester rather than in the spring. Individual sports tournaments were held preparatory to the meet. One hundred twenty' five girls participated in the various games of bad' minton, deck tennis, paddle tennis, table tennis, and bowling. Volleyball games were played by the sophomore, junior, and senior girls for elimination for the meet. The juniors and seniors were victorif ous in these games. Elaine Marsh was elected senior manager, Thelma Gobert, junior manager: and Phyllis Short, sophomore manager for the Meet. On january 27, this contest was held. A large crowd gathered in the boys' gym to see the girls participate in good, clean fun. The Seniors were barely able to emerge victorious, as the Junior and Girls' Meet FW Letty Hornbach, Miss Krumheuer, Patricia Barnes Barbara Sehler. Sophomore girls were surprisingly good, The prof ceeds from the meet went towards purchasing archery equipment. During Febmary and March the girls devoted their time to learning the technique of basketball. Plays were perfected and games were played. In this sport the Sophomores excelled in shooting baskets as well as in good defensive playing. By winning the tournament, they proved this ability. After basketball, the girls felt the urge to learn some sport that could be played outdoors. Many of them were interested in golf so instructions were given by Miss lna Krumheuer. Golf was practiced only one day a week. Un the other day, badminton and table tennis tournaments were held for the G.A.A. girls, themselves. Throughout the entire year activities were of great importance to the girls. The annual G.A.A. spread was, as usual, a very Hne alfair. The girls not only cooked their own food, but enjoyed eat' ing it too. At the Kopper Karnival, the G.A.A. had a fudge and popfcorn ball booth which was as profitable as it was popular. 01771, TIVITIES M W ?! 'T!SIII 1 1 P . if 'E T if . The group had a very fine placement bureau through which several boys and girls found employment. Glasses were purchased for five pupils need' ing them. Members put out an unusually fine cook book of which they are justly proud. They gave 3550 to the South High Student Loan Fund and S10 to the City Council Loan Fund. Money was raised for their many projf ects through two card parties, one at the Grand Rapids Women's Club, and the other at the Gas Company. The Happy Valley Frolics Entertainment, and the Kopper Karnif val were also sponsored by the P.fT.A. The Annual Banquet held in February, and the Mother and Daughter Tea in May were among the outstanding social events of the year. P.T.A. Latin Veni, vidi, vici! - 'LI came, I saw,.I conf quered! If it had not been said by Caesar centuries ago, this quotation might have been uttered by any Latin Club member, since the one requirement for membership is that one must have had at least two years of Latin. Thus the group is restricted to juniors and seniors. The main purposes of this orf ganization are to teach students something about ancient Roman life and to interest ninth and tenth graders in the works of Cicero and Virgil. Toward this end, at the first few of the program meetings, members told about the various aspects of the life of an average Roman in the first century before Christ. Facts and theories vied in the discussion of this statement, the season's timely question, as the debaters got away to a flying start by defeating the reputedly powerful Union team in their first debate of the season. Muskegon, highly rated, came next and was also defeated. Then, with one more victory needed to asf sure it a wall trophy, the team met defeat at the hands of Ottawa Hills. XVith one more debate on schedule, the group bent every effort to prepare a surprise attack, attention fixed upon the goal, a trophy award for the school and individual pins for the team. As great the effort, so great the dismay when a strong Christian team shattered all trophy hopes by muzzling the trick attack and taking the victory. Proposals in the debates ranged from an exchange of military aid of all kinds to a purely economic arf rangement between the nations.
