W6 pnibrwcier publuslmed by -SOUT1-I J-HG!-I SCJ-ICOL June 4936 volume XS: grand rapids, mich. I'-, ., Foreword Q This is our book. In it We have tried to express the feeling which each one of us will carry away as We leave South this year. You will find the faculty still presiding over their de- partments, the seniors heading the listg in the middle of the book the junior high folks turning up as usual, ostensi- bly growing smaller each year, and, last but not least, the underclassmen anticipating the joy of becoming seniors. From the last little seventh grader to the most dignified of the faculty, they constitute the theme of our book - Fellowship. MR. ARTHUR W. KRAUSE Dechcatlon ICVMQU 5 5 Q , E lf 4 . 3? After brief but brilliant campaigns, this year's council members were chosen, and the Student Council again organized. Those elected as officers were president, Wynand Brandelg vice-president, lack Kinsey, secretary, Florence Thompson, treasurer, Bernard Brandel, and the advisors, Miss Schweitzer and Mr. Churm. When committees were appointed, the council was ready to confront any task. As has always been the case, the condition of the halls was the first prob- lem to be met and solved. The seventh graders' desire to run in the corridors had to be suppressed, as well as the tendency of the seniors to wander about at random. Earl Crandall was the lucky individual who, as head of the citizenship committee, undertook to manage the halls each hour of the day, and he and his assistants were unusually efficient in keeping the halls orderly. Next came the football season and with it the weekly pep assemblies. Under lean MacDonalds able guidance as chairman of the assembly com- mittee, these Friday meetings were never-to-be-forgotten occasions. The football squads entrance, the cheers, the school songs, the interesting speeches all made each Friday a day greatly anticipated by each South student. As the year progressed, the council engaged in other events, such as the annual dance, which they put on very successfully, Clean-up Week' with a hard-fought drive for better-looking halls, neater class rooms, and generally improved appearance, ln March the council ioined the PTA. in sponsoring a bigger and better Penny Carnival, and thus concluded a year of great achievement. N 5 lan ANNUAL STAFF Although the Weekly meeting of the Annual staff may not have been greeted too enthusiastically by its members, the planning of a different an- nual was wholly supported. With this plan in mind the staff zealously and persistently plagued the various rooms in an effort to distribute tickets for the great 'Major Blowes' Amateur Show T The profits enabled South to be represented at the National Scholastic Press Association Convention in Milwaukee, December fifth tc seventh. The representatives on their return were bubbling over with novel ideas and modern conceptions of drafting an annual. llMore photographs and less writing became the staffs password. The circulation department ardently began its campaign after the new year by presenting an assembly. An attempt to spur the Annual subscription before February fourteenth, that date marking an increase in price, resulted in the Annual stratosphere balloon being sent aloft outside the senior session room. With a goal of at least eight hundred subscriptions, the balloon floated heavenward from day to day, lf there had been any thought of an unsuccessful annual, it was imme- diately dispelled when the book was finally assembled and sent to the printer. The work that each member had contributed toward the book was well worth the effort, and the staff felt truly grateful to the student body for its support. Q , NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETIES To gain a higher recognition for scholarship in the secondary schools, two societies, national in scope, have been organized. Membership in both societies is based on the scholarship record, leader- ship, character, and services rendered to the school. A committee of the faculty chooses the students who meet these requirements. The Senior Honor Society met at eight oclock every Tuesday morning in Miss Lamberts room. Their main project, raising money to purchase a page in the annual, was accomplished successfully by selling candy in the halls on Friday, and through the proceeds of a booth at the Penny Carnival. ln the spring the installation of the new members in the society took place at a very impressive assembly. This years officers were as follows: President ....,. Robert Morrow Vice-President . . Sena l-loutman Secretary . . . . lvory Clinton Treasurer . . Robert Swartz IUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY OFFlCFRS First Semester OFFICERS Second Semester President Robert Salsbury President Avanelle Parrish VicefPres1dent Dorothy Rczenga Vice-President Kenneth Wood Secretary lack Howick Secretary lack Howiclc Treasurer Thelma l-lauer Treasurer lane Baessler BARS AND CHEVRONS CLUB A big party at Iohnson Park started the year off successfully for the Bars and Chevrons Club, but it resulted in one regrettable conditiong namely, the club treasury was left in the red. Nothing daunted, the boys proceeded to remedy this situation by putting on the annual Kadet Klimax, which paved the Way for a bright future for the club members, and the club treasury was again in the black. Next came the Penny Carnival at which the club sponsored a target practice booth and scored a bull's eye. Under the leadership of Mr. Goss, the club sold tickets to the greatest indoor show on earth, the Shrine Circus, and the profits from the two books of tickets sold were donated to the club by the afore-mentioned faculty member. The first hour every Tuesday morning found Captain Hugh Veltman giv- ing instructions in military tactics to the ROTC. boys assembled in Room l19, and much was learned from his talks. This year's officers included the following: President . . . Sgt. Clarence Reverski Vice-President . . Capt. Hugh Veltman Secretary , . .... Sgt. Gillette Treasurer . . SOUTH HIGH TATTLER Buy your Tattlerl rang through the halls each Friday morning of the tall term as journalism students sold the school newspaper, which they also wrote and edited as part of their class work. Beginning the first school week, they put out a mimeographed news- paper for eight weeks, then obtained permission to print a three-column four- page newspaper at two cents. Confusion with Young Communists' publications through the term Pio- neer caused a change in mid-term from The Pioneer News' to The South High Tattlerf' News, feature stories, sports, column, and editorial comment each week continued with students' pictures whenever finances permitted, Copy was gathered on beats, special stories were assigned, and regula- tion newspaper routine was followed as far as possible, many stories going to city dailies, as well, ' 'Sandwich men appeared when the newspaper staff sponsored with the Annual staff a Major Blowes amateur show to raise money to send delegates to the National Scholastic Press association convention in Milwaukee, Decem- ber 5-7, Hobie Macauley, Karl Olson, and Miss Anton represented the news- paper. The big prize which enlivened the second-semester sales campaign for bargain tickets for the Tattler was a ticket to the Union-South basketball game February l4, for each member of the session room selling the highest percentage of its members. Boys from 323 won the prize, with jack lrlowick as chief salesman. Second semester there was no journalism class, so new recruits joined veterans in a staff class where instruction in newspaper techniques was given, and practical work in getting out the paper supplied members with experi- ence, Positions of responsibility were filled by Hobie Macauley, Karl Olson editors Donald Lindhout, Franzel Fisher, Fd:-.Yard Butler, Elsie Rowlader. ,, ,f , X , I X ,f, I t V , I l i til I .llll i 1 . s I ' . SENIOR GIRL RESERVES Can you walk home with me? Not on your lite, tootsl It's Senior Girl Reserves' meeting, and l plan to be there! Many a girl expressed this attitude toward our lively get-togethers. These entertaining gossip-tests occurred every other Wednesday, and all kid- ding aside, we really had some club. We started oft with a close election, and the following carried oft the honors: President, Kathleen Maclvlicken, vice-president, Lucille Carley, secretary, Norma Sprague, treasurer, Betty Eikenhoutg and council member, Katherine Covel. In the fall we made towels, dresses, aprons, holders, bibs, and night- gowns in the Needlework Guild. This brought out the home-loving instinct in us. There were numerous pot-lucks at the Y.W.C.A., a go-and-see trip to l-loekstras Ice Cream Company, and did the girls ever enjoy thatl ln addi- tion baskets were sent at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and a Mother-and- Daughter banquet was held on February 29, at which we all had a lovely time. At one of our pot-lucks Dr. Ruth Hendricks talked to us on the subject, Cosmetics, and perhaps you noticed that for the next few days we all ap- peared with bright-and-shiny, soap-and-water complexions. Four ot our girls who could dig up the money went to the State Convenf tion at Detroit. The millionaires were Virginia Gates, Kathleen lviaclflicken, Nelva Wisdyke, and Katherine Covel. The rest ot us Just heard about it. We concluded a very successful year with a grand-slam picnic, and well always remember the friends we made in the Senior Girl Reserves at Scutlz. IUNIOR LATIN CLUB Every other Wednesday after school in Miss Ynternas room, 325 A, the lunior Latin Club rnet and discussed old and new business. At the meetings Virgil came to life, and his 'Aeneid' compared with other great epics, became a fascinating and impressive story. THE 4C HI-Y CLUB Every Tuesday morning in Boom ll9 a group of tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade boys gathered together for their weekly 4C 'lHi-Y Club meeting. The purpose of this club was to create maintain, and extend throughout the school and community a high standard of Christian character, This club was closely affiliated with the Y.M.C.A. Do you remember last fall how nicely the goal posts on the football field were decorated with red and blue streamers? lt was the work of this club, and very cold work it was, to straddle the iron bars. However, they helped us through the football season with victory. The boys in this club had many good times together. A Halloween party that started at a theater and ended at Howard Hulsapplefs house was a big success, Howard furnishing plenty of coffee and doughnuts for all. There was a pot-luck supper at the YMCA. where everyone ate so rnuch that for a while they could scarcely rnove. Later the boys found time for swimming in the pool and garnes in the gymnasium. Three representatives of the 4C l'Hi-YH Club were sent to lackson for the Holder boys' conference, and they were treated like kings. ln February the club staged a bring-a-member campaign in an effort to interest more boys in Hi-Y. At the Penny Carnival the 4C Hi-Y Club was again in the spotlight, They had charge of the dart-throwing booth. The bally-hoo ability of some of our boys was surprising. Taking everything into consideration, the entire year for the club was a successful one, due, largely, to the aid of the faculty advisor, Mr. LeValley, who was very helpful to the club. THE ART PALETTEERS' CLUB Early last fall several of the art students asked Miss Vevia if the art club might be organized again this year, so on the first of October the youthful Michelangelos of South High assembled in Room 314 to discuss the forth- coming plans of the year and to elect officers. About the middle of November the club discovered that one-third of the members were missing. Thus for the remainder of the year it was transformed into an active police force to search for the missing members and their dues, This was not the only activity by any means. Mercy nol Their own prif vate and preferred speaker, Miss Vevia, always enlivened the meetings witli her lectures, With slides and pointer she told of the wonders of Riviera, Millet, Raphael, and Rembrandt, of Dutch, ltalian, American, and many un- known schools. Our Christmas party was a great success, everybody having a good tire, especially Robert Will, who carried away the first prize. The 'Penny Carnival, without a question, was the nicst fun. Several of the members with the best talent at pencil sketching were stationed behind easels and for the price of one cent presented an exquisite portrait accczzx panied by a remarkable fortune. The Maude Fuller Club was represented by Carrie Hunter, official delegate. Lucille Semeyn and Theressa Boyle were elected to visit the furniture factories. They inspected the lrnperial Furniture Co. and the Grand Rapids Chair Co. The climax of the convention was a banquet at the Y.W.C.A. at which Marion Beisel gave the welcome address to the girls, Others who attended the banquet were Eileen Snyder, Ruth Holmes, and Margaret Mitchell, The convention closed by having a group picture taken of the various home economics clubs represented. Our club had monthly business meetings, and also social meetings, such as teas, pot-luck suppers, and picnics. We entertained with a party for the girls from Burton School who are taking home economics and will enter South next fall. Our biggest achievement in the way of earning money was the selling of Scottie dogs which became the fad of the school during the month of March. DEBATIN G Every Monday and Wednesday night found the debaters straggling into Mr. Buikema's room one by one for debating and lively argument. The late arrivals invariably had the best excuses to offer, such as, the following: Sorry, but I had to stay to typing. Couldn't make it sooner, l had Annual meeting. Early in the fall following the trial debates, the squad was cut to eight members, six of whom attended the debate forum at Hastings. Here they enjoyed a very appetizing banquet, and attended a model debate followed by a dance in the school's recreation room. Work started in earnest with the opening of the practice debates with other city schools. Not only did these debates serve as an excellent means for comparing the opponents' arguments, points, and attacks with our own, but they also provided amusement as well, and South's squad still won- dering what happened to that box of candy which was promised them as a side issue ol their debate with Union. Following the practice debates, three of the debaters were chosen to represent the squad in the City tournament in which South debated the nega- tive side of the question, Resolved: That the several nations should make government monopolies of the manufacture and sale of all combat instru- ments of war. South was not fortunate enough as to enter the State contest, but all the squad felt that they had benefited greatly from their debating experiences and from the instruction of their able coach and advisor, Mr. Buikema. This years debating squad included Bill Banta, Patricia Gerharclt, Mar- jorie Buchanan, Geneva Cole, Karl Clson, Franzel Fisher, Bernice Utter, and George Madigan, the latter three representing the squad in the City tourna- ment. Other speech activities included: Oratory ....,.,. . . Agnes Birnie Extemporaneous Speaking , . . Litton. The curtain rose to the lilting tunes of gay football marches, showing three would-be drum-majors strutting across the field, They were Robert Rogers, Carrol Condon, and Iohn Cummins, and Johnny strutted his way to the coveted position. The scene shifted, and the tempo changed, bringing the less steady rhythms of dance tunes to our ears, accompanying a scene dominated by the Ludington orange and black uniforms as revelers of the Harmony Hop came into view. Once more the scene changed, and we found teardrops prevailing, as the South band disconsolately waved farewell to the departing Ludington guests. Basketball games, the Golden Gloves Tournament, and the all-city band swiftly occupied the scene and disappeared. Seated on the stage in the audi- torium, the band carried on its last activity for '36, the spring concert, as we heard the Egmont Overture by Beethoven. Memories of Steven Foster by Lucien Cailliet, First Suite for Military Band by G. Holst, and Youth Triumphant by Hadley. Following in close succession, Dale Iohnson, Robert Runnels, lack Amon, Roger Williamson, Iohn Cummins, Earl Blackburn, and Donald Kendall, members of the Directors' club, waved the baton under the supervision of Mr. Litton. The curtain descended as the last strains died away, completing another successful year at South for the Concert band. 0 1' S w' 5 SENIOR ORCHESTRA Do your talents lean toward music? Have you a wealth of pent-up energy waiting to be released? lf you have, pick yourself an instrument and join the parade of South musicians. For musical education mixed with lun and irolic, the Senior Orchestra is sincerely recommended. The highlights of the '35-'36 orchestral year were three banquets at which members of the orchestra played. One was held at the Elks Temple, one at the Masonic Temple, and a third at the Pantlind Hotel for the Midwestern Physical Education Conference. To prove that artists have their minds on things other than their talents, you should have seen the food consumed by aspiring South musicians. Remember that tobogganing and skiing party at Ravenswood? We will wager Mr. Litton doesl Clrle has a way with skiis.l The year was also marked with hard work. Numbers in the repertoire this season include these: Ballet Suite Coppeliau by Delibesg Auber's Fra Diavolof' Petite Suite de Concert by S. Coleridge-Taylor, 'Triml Favorite arranged by Ferde Grote, Wine, Women, and Song by Strauss, Ulewels of the Madonna by Ermanno Wolf-Rerrarig Air de Ballet, by Victor Herbert, and Indian Snake Dance, by Burleigh. Most of these selections were played, under the direction of Glenn B. Litton, at the annual spring concert which ended the orchestral year at South. GIRLS' GLEE CLUB An excellent opportunity for voice training is offered by South l-ligh Glee Clubs to anyone who has a desire to sing. lt is for this purpose that these organizations were founded. Twice a week the Girls' Glee Club met and learned a variety of new songs, and at the same time they reviewed and enjoyed the older numbers. At Christmas time this organization with the rest of the Vocal depart- ment took part in an inspiring and beautiful Christmas concert. South Highs Christmas message was again delivered in the form of a song, 'Treesf' which plays an important part in each Yuletide program. South High is proud of its glee clubs and feels deeply indebted to Miss Lindley for her splendid work with them. Twice a week the Boys' Glee Club met as a separate organization, and once a week it joined with the Girls' Glee Club for mixed chorus training, which enabled them to qualify for the mixed chorus which met every day. The Boys' Glee Club took an active part in the Christmas concert, and in the production of Zip, a musical show, put on by the vocal department under the capable dipction of Miss Lindley, the vocal instructor. The show was a great success and afforded a variety of excellent entertainment to all, and the boys displayed exceptional talent in their act, The Farmers' Frolicf' This year, due to the shortened length of the school term and the numer- ous other activities scheduled about the same time, there was no spring concert. FOOTBALL-FIRST TEAM With one of the greatest comebacks ever staged by a Bed and Blue team, the l935 football team annexed the city championship for the second consecu- tive year, tying with Central for the much-coveted title. The highlight ot the l935 team was its spectacular comeback in mid- season alter a mediocre start, climaxing in victories over Central in the annual Homecoming celebration and a Thanksgiving Day victory over Union. The latter victory was especially sweet because it was the first Trojan win over the Westsiders in a number ot years. The '35 team was well represented on the honor teams, not only in the city but also in the state. On the first all-city team South placed Captain Bob Devereaux, lohn Kemperman, and Captain-elect Bob Savage. Gordon Piatt received a place on the second all-city team. Captain Devereaux was also chosen as all-state halfbaclc by the Detroit Free Press, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a high-school football player. The coming season ot 1936 promises to be as good, or better, than the past. Mr. Gettings will have nineteen returning first-squad members to form a nucleus ot another championship team. Although he will miss such stars as Devereaux, Boon, Piatt and others, he hopes to capture a state championship. To Mr, Gettings, our honored coach, goes much ot the glory and credit ot the '35 team. He was the one who inspired the boys to stage a lighting comeback, teaching them not only to be lighters in the fullest sense ol the word, but also to be good sportsmen. Coach Danny Rose was greatly handicapped by the lack of veteran material, only one member of last year's first squad returning for the '35-'36 team, that being Gordon Piatt, who was elected captain at the beginning of the season. However, last year's cham- pionship second team furnished Coach Rose with a group of smooth basket- ball players and it was from these that he chose a starting five. Besides the city games, South encountered an outside rival, Holland Christian, in the local gym, South winning 20-17. This was the first defeat for the Hollanders in thirty-nine starts. ln the only city win for the Trojans, they beat out the Tech Wildcats, 26-l8, in the home gym. This made up for a 26- 20 defeat suffered earlier in the season at the hands of the Techites. The Trojans never lost by a very large margin, causing the other local teams to fight every minute in order to win. VARSITY CLUB Organized in 1926, the Varsity Club has long been one ot the outstanding clubs in school. The purposes of this organization are to promote better scholarship among athletes, a greater excellence in athletics, and a better cooperative feeling among the athletes, Membership is restricted to those fellows who have earned a major S in either of the three major sports, tootball, basketball, or track. The varsity club this year put on its annual dances, The Turkey Trot in the first semester, and the Regional Ramble in the second semester, Besides this, the traditional spring picnic was held, climaxed with initiation at new zxeizibers. Oiticers ct the club were Bob Devereaux, presidentg lohn Hubbard, vicefpresident, and Vlfynand Brandel, secretary-treasurer. 4 T'. i il 5 A K GIRI.S' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Every Tuesday and Thursday night found the persistent GAA. girls filing into the gym for the various activities. While autumn was still upon us, the girls made a splendid showing in ski-suits, when they played off the hockey tournament at Iefferson field. All classes were in good attendance and a keen competition prevailed, but the sophomores and seniors tied for first place. Hockey was not all enjoyment, however, for each girl had a chance to flaunt her knowledge of hockey, when Miss Krurnheuer presented the written hockey rules test. Some of the seniors were taken down a peg when they learned that only two of their number had passed the test and the remaining victims had to try again with much better luck. With the coming of cold weather the gym was again alive with activity, and the remainder of the year was devoted to more vigorous competition in volleyball, individual sports, basketball and golf. Besides these after-school sports, the girls put in more time with outside activities, such as, tennis, ice-skating, and other seasonable sports, of which forty-eight hours had to be handed in and checked by the point-recorder, Louise Rykert. These are only a few of the requirements necessary to win an honor. G.A.A. was also active as a social club. The main event of the year being the annual fall spread at which the girls indulged in an ample repast and enjoyed an interesting program. G.A.A. was efficiently presided over by Bernice Utter, president, Theresa Bayle, secretary and treasurer. TRACK South's '35 track team under the able guidance of Pop Churm, again led all the other city high school tracks teams in quest of the city track title, defeating Central at the regional meet, held at Houseman Field. The team engaged in three dual meets with Tech, Central and Union, winning all three of them. ln the Trojans first meet they defeated the Tech thin-clads by a score of 65-39. ln their next meet Coach Churm's boys defeated the blue and gold of Central of this meet, 58574-45lf4. During the course of this meet Gillesse set a new school record of 2:07 in the 880-yard run, and Ray McDonald tied his city record of 5 feet, ll inches in the high jump. Following the Central meet, the Southites turned back the Union Red Hawks, 73112-SOVZ. ln the city regional, South defeated the other city schools, piling up 4235 points to 421f3 points for Central, her nearest rival. This years team shows promise of keeping up the old South tradition of winning the city track championship. With such veterans returning as Captain Gillesse, McDonald, Gleason, Hansma, Pifferella, Mitchell, Savage, Kemper- man, Seif, Raab, Thompson, and Doltoske, Coach Churm should find little difficulty in developing another champion track team.
