DEDICATION The 1953 Southite is dedicated to the memory of Miss Margaret Leacy, the beloved South High teacher who died suddenly on January twenty-seventh of this year in the prime of a vital teaching career, and to the sound educational principles for which she stood. These principles contain the essence of the pioneer spirit which brought early settlers to Omaha and made it essential for them, ninety- nine years ago, to establish public schooling in the community and to strive ever after toward its betterment. Miss Leacy pioneered primarily in the field of understanding. When she worked with an individual or a group, it was side by side as a friend, someone who thoroughly comprehended the strains and perplexities of ,adolescence and was constantly available whenever counsel was needed. In the classroom she met the student on an informal level, her poise and personality correlating with an extensive educational back- ground so as to provide an atmosphere in which both the intrinsic value of a subject was instilled and an eager interest stimulated. Revered for her motivating and organizing attributes, Miss Leacy promoted a far reaching extracurricular program and, in addition to her regular full schedule, toiled long hours to supervise such activities as Club Day, now an annual tradition. Her lofty, humanitarian ideals nurtured the type of progress neces- sary to a democratic student-teacher relationship which has become a milestone along the road leading from the one room, wooden bench when the instructor ruled with a rod, to the goal of modern education in which all youth are adequately prepared for life and guided along the path to many opportunities. fi K.
