Much is expected of this .group which makes up the largest graduating class in the history of South High. The class has seen a number of changes take place and has enjoyed the many privileges which the new building - A affords. -Q ... .-.. I We find, after looking over the questionaires of the students, that thirtyfone are entering University, twentyftwo others are going to college, twentyfeight are going into the business world, four will teach, five will take up nurse's training, and the remainder have no definite plans for the future. The winning of six games, and the losing of two in a tough schedule is the record of Coach Jim Patrons Red and White Warriors. The crowning efforts of the season brought out the defeat of Tech, the first time since 1921. IvIoon Mullen scored a touchdown when he caught a beautiful pass over the goal line from the hands of our allfcity quarter-back, Bernard. The versatile Ashburn made good the try for point. South's line and backfield played with un' erring precision in 'bringing down the Cuming street lads. The first game of the season, which was lost to Thomas Jefferson was a hard tough game. McCook Beef luggers were next and proved a worthy foe. john Owen star halfback, sustained a broken leg and was out for the rest of the season. South emerf ged on the short end of the score, losing by a drop kick in the last half second to play. Soutlfs debut with Creighton Prep, marked up their first city game by beating Prep. A touch down by Bernard, coupled with a safety and try for point by Ashburn, did the trick. They next played their annual game with Abraham Lincoln and came out victor' ious. Yager blocked a punt which Pankowski fell upon and converted into a touchdown. Ashburn kicked the extra point. In the game with Tech, South showed its mettle and paved its way to a city championship. The journey to Fremont proved sucessful by defeating the outstaters on their own gridiron. Ashburn made a 41 yard drop kick aff ter he made a touchdown 'ivhich proved the downfall of Fremont. South and Central played in a sea of mud and water, and the purple clad lads managed to keep the game at a scoreless tie. The last game was a fitting climax to the season. South, with touch' downs by Marsicek, Anthony, and Dietch, and extra points by Ashburn, won over the Norseinen. A great deal of credit must go to coaches Patton and Lowry, who labored hard to shape the available material into the best team in the city, and one of the best'in the state. The backfield was one of the best with Marsicek at halfg Ted Anthony, half 3 Hughie Ashburn, Capt. elect, at fullback, and Bidy Bernard, quarter. They began the season with defeat by the fast Lincoln High team, the present State Champions, and ended the season with a victory over the scrappy Creighton Prep. team. In the city tournament the team beat North in the first round, but in the semi' finals were defeated by Technical, the 1927 City Champions. The captain of this year's team, Theodore Ted Anthony, held down a forward position and played some real basketball. Tom Moon Milllen, held the center position and the regularity with which his shots found the basket won more than one game for the packers. Byron Bidy Bernard played the other forward position until he was graduaded in midfseason. He played wonderful ball by finding the bas' ket from the center of the floor. The leaving of Bernard meant the breaking of that fa' mous trio, Mullen, Anthony and Bernard. After the graduation of Bernard, Montgomery seem-cd to be the man for the forward position left open and he played a bang-up game all the time. Although it was Hugie Ashburn's first season with the team his ability in the guard position was ex' cellent. Another whirlfwind at guarding was Robert Reeves, capt-elect. This was Bob's first year too. The reserves, composed of Charles Semerad, Wallace Wiig, Eugene Graves, Richard Yager, Bud McAvoy, who was graduated in midfseason, also did some good work for Coach Patton. The boys on the squad that will be back to play next year are: Robert Reeves, captselectg Hughie Ashburn, and Eugene Graves. Much will be expected from them. Coach Lowry's reserves had a good season during 1926. They had a hard sched' ule, winning two games losing one and tying two, The first team to go down to defeat by South was North. The reserves had it easy with the Norsemen and won by a good margin. The game with Central was a fast and hard fought game ending in a tie. Another victory was chalked up when the seconds heat Creighton. This game was a close score and the boys fought hard for it. The Thomas Jefferson reserves proved worthy foes and held South to a scoreless tie- The hardest game of the season was with Technical. South came out on the short end of a large score. The second team players were: Reeves, Vail, Ridely, Goddard, McElligott, Wentz, Dyba, Thomas, Murray, Hayes, Myler, Chance, E. Parks, Pesek, Stillwell, Gregg, and Emigh. As most of the letter men will be graduating many of these boys will be seen in the first team line-up next year. I After getting off to a poor start the youthful lads managed to turn in some good games and the outcome of most of the games was not decided until the final whistle. - ------------- f:1aa7+i ------ L HH UO HHTO xi W -wwNWgMgMW5MMNwMwWWUWU3? Creighton was taken into camp during the second round, and Central was forced to forfeit a match, after they had already won it, because they used an ineligible man. Lincoln, Nebraska also took a dual from us. Capt. Bingham was high point man for the season, picking up points in every meet entered. His specialty is diving and the 5Ofyard dash. Watkins won numerous points for his team, and Blankenship was sure of points but was ineligible most of the season. Several freshmen were members of the team and next year we should have a champion' ship gang- Our relay team was one of the best in the city, made up of Bingham, Wat' kins, Sakalosky, Blankenship, and Virschel, four of these swimming in all meets. Crosf by was always good for points in the plunge for distance. Capt. Bingham, Werpetinski, Lang, and Yager will be lost through graduation, but a good bunch will be back and fighting for places next fall. WRESTLING ......,,,.,, ,,,,,,,,,,,, Wrestliiig during the past season has been growing in popularity. Since no faculty coach was available, Otto Matulka took over the task and filled the position creditably, ln the city meet this year Matulka was the only South High man to get into the finals. South won one dual meet this year. and that from Central. However. no school had a walkfaway when meeting South and the old South spirit was always in evidence. For next year prospects are bright with the following men hack: Smutny. Olien Dyba, Murnan, Blend, Rowe, and Povondra. Smutny and Dyba will serve as leaders for the team, being chosen by their team mates to act as captains.. Others who will be out are: Pesek, Jarousek, Mikovec, Biddles. Thomas, Ballen, Haney. All in all, it looks like a good year for South in wrestling. Matulka's loss through graduation will be keenly felt, but with plenty of material a winning team should be turned out. BASEBALL South High won the city championship this year, playing a stiff schedule of games and suffering but one defeat which was to Tech in the last game of the season. Tech by losing to Central, forfeited the city championship to South High, The Redfclad Packers had to play stellar baseball in turning in this wonderful ref cord. Although South lost to Tech they were awarded the city flag when Central turned in an unexpected victory over the Drummond coached lads. The score was 4 to 2. ' The first game of the season was with Central. The Packers held the Central' ites to one run, winning by a 7 to 1 score. The game with North was a victory too, South having 12 runs and North none. The trip toiCreighton was another success. South finished on the long end of a 14 to 6 score. The first game with Tech was a close game and the Packers won 6 to 4. When Central came up to Athletic Park for their second game they were defeated 10 to 2. Thesecond meeting with North South beat the Vikings 10 to O. Another victory was chalked up for the Packers when Creighton visited South. The score was 14 to 6. The first defeat of the season came from Tech at Athletic Park. Tech brought in 5 runs and held the Packers to 2. South owes her champion team to the number of eligible letter men on it. The letter men playing this year were Capt. Ashburn, ,lohn Owen, .Clinton Hughes, Otto Matulka, Bob Reeves, Frank Mader, Chuck Semerad, Richard Yager, and Wallace Wiig. Other men on the squad were Hemple, McElligott, Franklin, Krajeck, and Kozney. Three legs age necessary to retain the cup, and it looks as though we would be the ones to gain t ese. Last year's team was made up of Capt. Goodman, Frank Siedlik, Frank Ohnesorg, Matthew Zadalis, and Ray Groves. They did not lose a dual match and took all comers into camp during the city tournament. Frank Siedlck won the open 'tournament in 1926 with Goodman as runnerfup. The 1927 tournament has progressed to the flnal .round with Buscher and Anthony paired.Seymour was medallist in the qualifying round with an 86, played under disagreeable conditions, rough fairways, and rain. Bohaty, Groves and Kopke were also in the championship flight. Goodman and Seidlik did not enter the school tourna' ment, but are numbers 1 and 2 on the school team. Several freshmen are showing up well, namely Dropinski, Menchetti, Bohaty, Rohwolik, and should add strenght to the team next year. Goodman, Groves, Seymour and Anthony are graduating and so will build a new team to cop the city champion' ship for the third time in 1928. TENNIS Tennis enthusiasts perked up a little at South during the past season. Two new new courts were established in Athletic Park, which made practice more convenient. The courts were much in demand and many were the keen contests waged All dual matches and the city meet were played on the courts of the Omaha Tennis Club in Dundee. Five teams were in the circuit, Central, Creighton, North, South, and Technical. Team play featured and school trophies were offered. South won a dual match from North during the season, but lost the others. We also entered the city meet. The team was made up of McEvoy, Bernard, Anthony, Wheeler, and Goddard- In the home tournment, Bernard won the gold medal and Goddard the silver medal. Robb and Wheeler were runnersfup. McEvoy and Bernard will be lost to the team through graduation, but Anthony, Goddard, Wheeler, Mullins, and Matthews will be left until June. TRACK - When Coach Patton called for track men, about fifty boys answered his call. Among these were eight letter men: Gilbert, Holmstedt, Anthony, Chedester, Con' nort, Hupp, Mullens and Cwens. Ray Chedester, the mile and the halffmile runner, was elected captain by the 1926 letter men. ' Dual meets have been held with North, Creighton and Tech. And, although South lost three meets the scores were close. In the Council Bluffs relays the boys'd1d well. Gilbert was second in the shot put. Tesnolidek tied for third in the high Jump and Chedester second and Yost third in the mile run. ' The men who will represent South at the State meet are Gilbert, the shot and dis' cuss, Holmstead, sprints and low hurdles, and Chester, mile run. The meets that are to beirun yet are Medic Relays, dual meet with Thomas jefferson and the Clty meet at Tech High. . , The boys who have so far earned letters are: Yost, Gilbert, Dietsch, Wentz, Mont' gomery, Connors, McEvoy, Holmstead, Anthony, Tesnolidek and Chedester. This month finds many setting forth on the sea of life, We are wishing smooth sailing for those who leave South High. Perhaps these words written by Arthur Bris- bane fa greater editor than weffwill serve as good directions to the youthful sailors. Two ships pass, each with its sails filled out by the same wind, The difference inbldirection is accounted for by the handling of the rudder and the adjustment of the sans. What the force of the wind is to the ship, our varying emotions, passions, ambif tions, appetites and aspirations are to us. All of these constitute the power which may be called 'human force'. This power differs in different individuals, as the wind differs on different days. It may blow from the east or the west or the north or south. However it may blow, it can be forced, by proper steering, to send the ship in any direction desired. It is harder to beat against the wind, of course, and' many men have hard strug' gles to steer themselves to a good port in the face of an adverse start, a hard beginning, or inclinations difficult to overcome. ' Consider yourself a ship launched on the sea of life under certain conditions- but with the essential condition in your own control. The wind may be feeble, you may drift for a while or move very slowly-move at least in the right direction. The wind may blow a gale, and you may feel, as many do, that you cannot control your emotions and your appetites. But if that comes show at least as much interest in yourf self as a sailor does in his ship. Take in sail and fight the storm, instead of going will' ingly to destruction. Make up your mind that your own way at least shall be controllf ed by the rudder of conscience, and learn from the passing ships a lesson of use in your own life, As broadcasters for the good ship L'South we thank those who have answered our S. O. S. calls so willingly. We have tried to serve by tuning in sympathetically on all phases of school life and appreciate the way in which our teachers and classmates have facilitated our task.
