My South aims to reflect the best that America has to offer its youth in guidance and training for effective living. It is our desire to be consistent with the principles of de- mocracy in both theory and practice. XVith this in mind, the school administration acknowledges how imperative it is to provide youth with the opportunity to experience and exercise their individual and group responsibilities and privileges. The strength of American institutions is a result of the efforts of those who are involved in their construction and perpetuation. To this end, South makes an effort to provide its youth with those experiences which will re- sult in attitudes, abilities, and skills conducive to the development of capable citizens. lt is anticipated that such citizens will have the zeal to participate at levels consistent with their abilities in the processes of govern- ment, the making of a living, and the carrying out of their social relationships. The future strength of our nation will be determined by the degree to which our youth have respect for the laws of our country and the Welfare of the many. The training we provide is aimed at developing self-respecting, self- reliant citizens, who have the capacity to think logically and to function effectively in those areas of activity which result in worthy home membership, vocational competence. good health. appreciation of the good and the beautiful, wise use of leisure, respect for our social and scientific environment, and reasonable mastery of the fundamental skills. At South the environment contributes to the growth of democratic attitudes and practices. Respect for all per- sons and institutions is a part of the dynamism of the school. With understanding adult counsel, all students are provided with the opportunity to help shape the policies and to carry out the functions of this institution of which they are an integral part. YVhen youth are treated with fairness, consistency, honesty, and faith in their daily contacts with the faculty, they in turn reflect their concern for the Welfare of others and generally im- pose upon themselves those controls essential to the success of the group.
