Assistant Superintendent are those who work so diligently to acquaint Z 0 D I 14 Z 10 us with the treasures of knowledge awaiting ' d t'o . Th e us in our e uca 1 n ese men and wom n have come to realize that an investment in learning pays the best interest. Their devotion enables students to receive the full percentage of this investment. The able executives and administrators, as captains of a ship, chart the course for the teachers to follow. They provide the leadership, experience, and guidance neces- sary to insure a successful journey. They are able to guide us around obstacles which may endanger this learning experience, and they also give advice to aid us in achievement. Teachers form a link of understanding between the student and the administra- tion. The satisfaction of seeing a student understand is the only reward teachers ask in return. Young adults like to have someone to respect, and what better people are there than those who teach and prepare them for the life they will share with others in the world. Through friendliness and perseverance, teachers enlarge our philosophy of life by not only educating us in material things, but also in values of lasting importance. it fmt lt at W Wt fiat at Lawrence Schroeder Assistant Superintendent WW! WV, My South aims to reflect the best that America has to offer its youth in guidance and training for effective living. It is our desire to be consistent with the principles of de- mocracy in both theory and practice. XVith this in mind, the school administration acknowledges how imperative it is to provide youth with the opportunity to experience and exercise their individual and group responsibilities and privileges. The strength of American institutions is a result of the efforts of those who are involved in their construction and perpetuation. To this end, South makes an effort to provide its youth with those experiences which will re- sult in attitudes, abilities, and skills conducive to the development of capable citizens. lt is anticipated that such citizens will have the zeal to participate at levels consistent with their abilities in the processes of govern- ment, the making of a living, and the carrying out of their social relationships. The future strength of our nation will be determined by the degree to which our youth have respect for the laws of our country and the Welfare of the many. The training we provide is aimed at developing self-respecting, self- reliant citizens, who have the capacity to think logically and to function effectively in those areas of activity which result in worthy home membership, vocational competence. good health. appreciation of the good and the beautiful, wise use of leisure, respect for our social and scientific environment, and reasonable mastery of the fundamental skills. At South the environment contributes to the growth of democratic attitudes and practices. Respect for all per- sons and institutions is a part of the dynamism of the school. With understanding adult counsel, all students are provided with the opportunity to help shape the policies and to carry out the functions of this institution of which they are an integral part. YVhen youth are treated with fairness, consistency, honesty, and faith in their daily contacts with the faculty, they in turn reflect their concern for the Welfare of others and generally im- pose upon themselves those controls essential to the success of the group. Bennion Vice-Principal must be made continually It IS necessary to 1 f . . e have people to whom you can go for mature counsel when you are faced with momentous decisions pertaining to fields in which you have had no previous experience. Counselors and vice-principals fill this position. They, being the guidance center of the school, are continually in Contact with the students and their uncertain- ties. What classes should I take next yearffy' What scholarships are available? and What is the budget for our next dance?', These are familiar questions asked a vice-principal. Counselors, on the other hand, deal with the perplexities of the student pertaining to relations at home, at school, and their relationships with others. No distinct line can be drawn between the duties of a counselor and vice-prin- cipal, for most students feel free to seek the guidance of either of these to aid them in making decisions. Having answers to most questions and solutions for most problems counselors and vice-principals help to guide the affairs of a school and are certainly one of its main-stays. Like experienced observers, they view their radar screen and direct their complex traffic pattern. I a Iudith R. Bassan Bruce Downing Margaret Hansen Fern A. These three facts are emphatically stressed, and if carried out effectively, a person will not only be a successful speaker, but a success in life as well. A speech class will not only give self-conhdence in speaking, but also in everyday life. One of the qualities that is noticed in all great leaders is their ability to express their ideas and thoughts through their speech. Every person should learn to Kenneth D. Zenger s urray for Books! Books are the greatest teachers of all time. Have you ever stop- ped to consider where We would be Without them? Our civil- ization would be one of a backward and illiterate people. What nation contributed the wheel to aid the progress of mankind? Who Wrote the Magna Charta? In what war did we gain our independence from Great Britain?A history class offers qual- ified answers to these and all other ques- tions that a naturally inquisitive student has. History is a study of human life from the ancient times to our present hurry-scurry World. Students gain a fundamental and beneficial understand- ing of human events which are valuable in making them appreciate modern de- velopments and aspects of life. Do you know who invented the light bulb? Have you ever wondered what our country would be like if the Constitution had not been ratiiied? This is one question that is asked by many students who are suffering through the math classes of today. It is being found that a better education is demanded in almost every walk of life. Math is needed to continue our educa- tion in scienceg girls Hnd it necessary in their homemaking classesg boys are in contact with it in every project they undertake for indus- trial artsg all business courses entail some mathematicsg and it is even necessary to have a background in this field to participate in the physical education programs. Science students realize that in the future our nation is going to need an increasing number of skilled scientists in all fields. These professional men and women that will be re- quired for the future are going to come from the classrooms of today. Students realize that in order to obtain success they are going to need a good basic background in science. Teachers are aiding us in establishing a firm understanding of the basic princi- ples so we may rapidly move to the higher challenges of learning. Skills in dissecting worms are being acquired in biology while chemistry offers opportunities in working with explosives. Physi- ology teaches students the importance of the ischium. Changing a diaper is an artg fixing a formula takes careful calculationsg and preparing meals for a husband requires initiative or the knowledge of a can opener. It takes time and patience for girls to learn the fundamentals of homemak- ing and the skills which they must acquire to become an efficient home- maker. A girl should be prepared to run a household smoothly and to keep her family under control. Using good judgment and clear thinking are also a part of this learning process. From the homemaking classes emerge the cooks, the seamstresses, and the hostesses of tomorrow. 21 Ralph L. Each one of the staffs is important in producing an efficient, smooth-running school. The silence of the classroom was broken by the cry of a student in the back of the room. He was frantically searching for a pen with ink in it. An- other voice was heard across the room. It was a girl trying to borrow a piece of paper. This could have been avoided by a simple trip to the book- store of the school. Our bookstore is a Well- equipped, Well-managed one Where any needed materials may be found. It has often been stated, He who controls the power of the purse controls the nationf, This can be applied to a school when made to read, She who controls the power of the purse helps to make a school the able-functioning organization it should bef, Our treasurer fulfills this position and does help keep South on topf' Have you ever noticed the special shine on the floors of school when you return on Monday morning? Have you ever considered the work that goes into the lunch you enjoy from the cafe- teria? These are some of the many duties fulfilled by the custodians and cafeteria Workers who so diligently and cheerfully accomplish the tasks that their positions require. Could I have an outside line please? This ques- tion is asked on the phones of the school office every day. The office staff efficiently takes care of the school. They also provide us with the bul- letin, a daily reminder of school activities. ZIP Our school is Ll melting pot where each individual puts forth his character and personality to aid South High along the road of progress and fume. It is a group of energetic and enthusiastic students who work und share together under the system of a democratic government. To- gether, a united mass, they search for success, lifeis golden key, together they grow und develop from each otheris ex- periences, meeting both success and fail- ure. They put their faith and trust in Cary Shepherd, when they chose him to lead them. They give their utmost for South High. The oflicers, along with other Cubs, possess their own qualities, but when they band together a dynamic force is created behind South High School - the Student body. TTLQS A very memorable year has passed. Cherished by the memory of things large and small, by the intangible something that South High offered each of us, the year gone by has been built with love and respect for our school. Kindled by the warmth of friendship and the glow of democracy and tolerance, our year has been united with our spirit and the fun of countless activities made worthwhile with the knowledge we gained in classes. All these things and many others have been fused together in forming this year by our master Welder, Dr. Backman, who has carefully guided us with the patience and wisdom he has gained through his service and love for South. South High symbolizes a tradition, a tradition of greatness, ask any true South- erner and he'll tell you. This conviction will become stronger, for South High is a way of life which forms and molds and will leave an undeniable imprint upon each of us. The advantages gained may not at first be apparent, yet each of us who graduates is better equipped to step into tomorrow with greater understanding and maturity, according to the strength of our own character. if 'fda i vy- ik ,hi max Wx! as -we ff -,E -lv, ' RQ ' Nfxh S5111 F -'ff Q fi , Al 1- -E+ , Q. f.-fry! 11 ki x Y! A week of pajania parades, all-night parties-as well as classes and nieet- ings-gave thein the opportunity to associate with inany girls and, at the saine time, to learn about our government. Elections were held, and Susan Fenn was elected to the office of Mayor. South was repre- sented well, and all the delegates participated actively. BOYS' TOO! Our dignified representatives to Boys, State found time between Classes to have water fights and eat ice cream cones from the Creamery. Steve Blifllin, who was elected Cov- ernor of Boysl State, still found time for pillow fights and jam sessions. Howard Ashby and Paul Eddington were mayors, and the other boys also held oflices and proved their true Southern spirit and friendliness. fblllgili' W i ' H?-M. These stu- arc to be heartily congratulated for their achievements particularly since it was necessary this year to have a 3.909 aver- age for eligibility. This scholarship is awarded by the University of Utah and offers a stipend of S50 each quarter for the freshman year. This award symbol- izes the lirst stepping-stone toward col- lege life which will lead eventually to respectable and profitable careers. This group of fifteen scholars represents not only the best at South High, but the best in the city, the state, and the nation. This accelerated space age holds much in store for our students as leaders of tomorrow. FRIENDS around the world have the opportunity to participate in school activities. Two foreign students have come to live with two American families. Asmir and Mar- grit have become a functional part of South and friends to all. l POW-WOW! Indian Exchange was an experience these students shall never forget. The unique bowling games will always be remembered. Itis such fun to set up your own pins! The Cubs participated in rousing games of basketball, went swimming, and eagerly awaited chow timel During their stay they found the Indians to be truly genuine and likeable people. c .fa -'Wa,if3,,! I thought I was in an ex- clusive furniture store when 1 saw the cedar chests, end tables, and lamp bases exhibited by the wood shops. The mechanical drawings on display seemed to be technically perfect as far as my untrained eye could see, The art work I viewed was an example of the techniques practiced by the art- ists of our school. The real talents of my fellow students were evident and satisfying. Art critics appear everywhere at the spring exhibit. . ...L H ' ' f No, Brent, the square tube does not go in the round hole.
