Dewey Hale Dean of Students Resin on the bow and away we go - that's our dance-minded Dean of Students. I-le's a good Joe, ready with a helping hand wherever it is needed, and no square even though he likes to dance. His first thoughts are always of us and South. He has gained the admiration of his fellow workers and the student body. His astounding ability and sparkling personality have been very important in helping us to develop our decisions for the bumpy road ahead. Counselor From September to June, for many years now our Miss Monay has unselfishly given her time in the interest of teen-age problems. In case of wrong-doing, she more often than not has substituted a friendly smile and an understanding solution instead of a much deserved scold- ing and tongue lashing. Thanks, Miss Monay, for helping to make remembrances of student life pleasant. Dr. Doug Williams Counselor Smooth - yes, smooth - is the word to describe South's Vocaf tional Counselor, Dr. Doug Williams. His knowledge, genuine interest, and understanding'oi the student make it possible for him to guide, influence, and mould the future of many a Southerner. Doug's general character, his dignity of bearing, his warm, subtle friendliness to any- one and everyone is an example of finesse which every Southerner looks up to' and strives to attain. Walter Stevens Treasurer Amiable Mr. Stevens, alias the money man, maintains the responsibility of guarding and balancing the finances of this school. With a calm, placid air he balances books, fills out - requisitions, and literally handles thousands of dollars in the students' behalf. South is fortunate in having such a personage. Our thanks to you, Mr. Stevens. ' 1 J ?4rW44A ,S H H b i A , . M V ii S S A 'x l- liii 5 is Q 'W? S G A M ' S ' K 'A sl :gf ..., V5 M H S 1 L i i f f I . ' Q , -. It was the office staff to whom we were indebted for this service. Other duties, such as checking absences, filing grade cards, and oiling the wheels that keep South High in motion from September to June were carried out by these highly efficient people. Our appreciation goes to them for a top drawer school year. Custodians Their work to make our school a better place in which to live is not often taken into consideration. Pleasant, good natured, always ready to help, are our custodians. Their tireless mopping up after thoughtless students is a thankless job. They have made South High a much cleaner place in which to spend the days from September to June. Thanks to them for co-ordinating our as- semblies. The boys of the library staff were on hand to help the librarians and the student body if they were called upon. Their help is greatly appreciated. The girls staff of the library gave of their time freely and un- selfishly that we might be aided in our library work. The formula for finding a book isn't hard when you know that you have two very capable librarians looking out for you. Their index-minds work rapidly in locating the information we once thought was impossible to find, They surely rate tops with the student body. Mrs. Sims and Miss Goates, Librarians Lynn Wallace Student Body President It seems that Wally is just about the friendliest, happiest, and proudest stu- dent at South High School. He's friendly by nature, always ready with a smiling greeting and a helping hand. His happiness came from leading the Cubs through a successful school year all the way from its beginning in September until the last diploma was handed out in June. And he was proud all right -- proud of being President of South High School, in our estimation, the best school in the world. South High students, in turn, were proud of having Lynn as their school prexy. 20 GEORGE PAU LSON BI Fa I1 eYf of footb 1 Was Sou fh' . S V 5. If basketball UGS rfmes Ofge d- th ld it ff O H1 will . The big year!! The long awaited year ot fulfilment!! And to the seniors, every ordinary activity brought heartfelt enjoyment and something unex- plainably sentimental. They participated to the utmost in their last high school football game, the last Barnival, the last school play that would be actually a part of them. After June, they would be on the outside, looking in on South High activi- ties. From September to June brought nine short months of their hallowed senior year, for somehow, September just melted right into June. It was only when the last precious days of May had passed that they began to realize how much South meant to them and what a big chunk of their hearts would be left inside her walls. Because this year was so important to them, the seniors were very particular in their choice ot class leaders. They chose sincere Bill Fogg as president, Ruth Sid- well with her sunshine smile as vice-president, and cool-headed Jackie Jacobsen as secretary. These capable leaders proved that the choice of the senior class was a commendable one. ' 30 Lois Abboit David Andrew Bill Allen Joyce Acocks . No one will ever forget how unique and gor- geous were the decorations. Thousands of artificial flowers - aqua, pink, and purple - hundreds of summer green streamers, and an orchestra complete with violins transformed the crisp Janu- ary atmosphere to that of a beautiful night in June. Masses of streamers and roses formed a pillar-like effect in the center of the floor, around which the orchestra was seated. Visions of loveliness swirled and whirled beneath garlands of roses, which sprayed out everywhere from the center mass. For a final touch, flowers were used to decorate the walls with the theme words June and Jan- uary. Congratulations go to Chairman Bobbie McKean and her hard-working, industrious committee for the ingenuity and orgin- ality they displayed in making this event one of the highlights of the school year. 80 Oh, look! We've only one thousand six hundred forty-three more roses to go! Tired feet and aching arches. 81 Flashing smiles were worn by all who passed ihrough the archway into the dreamy atmosphere of June in January. BARNIVAL Movies, booths, games, prizes, danc- ing, and last but not least, food provided the activity for anyone and everyone at this year's Barnival. Bright plaid shirts and levis were the fashion as iniormality reigned as king. Such places as the fortune-telling booth, the hog-calling contest and the hitching-post QAhl At last I've got my manll opened the even- ing's excitement and hilarity. Next came the door-prize drawings. Plump, tender turkeys, and spicy hams caused exclamations of joy, coupled with the moans and groans of the oh-so-close winners. Zest- tul kickapoo juice and hot dogs satisfied hungry Southerners as they dashed on their way to the gyms tor social and square dancing. 82 The theme of the dance was King for a Nigh Fathers t, and the assembly featured as contestants. Why wouldn't Dads be Kings with South High Prin- CGSSGS 0 n their arms. A feeling ot pride predominated as the girls dated their most steady boyfriend for the traditional Fathers' and Daughters' Dance. Daughters were proud of their fathers, and the fathers were equally as proud of their daughters. , ,VYW , The oriental atmosphere and soft, dreamy music were perfect ingredients for an evening of fascination. 84 ffnfwf' Foo Ling serves lotus cakes and punch tea at the Pagoda Prom. Literary Treasurer Mr. George Maack Art and Layout Mrs. Garnet Pearson Mr. Walter Stevens Action in the dark room. The finishing touches are being added to the layout of our illustrious basketball team. C. BUSINESS STAFF The business staff of the yearbook worked veryiindustriously to see that every yearbook was delivered and accounted for. Many thanks go to this excellent staff for the efficiency with which they carried out their technical work. Nola Goff and Barbara Larsen, not pictured, In presenting this, the 51-52 Southerner, to you we hope it has captured a few of the cherished mem- ories of South High. With the end of school we sen- iors look forward to the future, although we long to stay in the midst of the friendly excitement of high school. We are proud to say we are Southerners and as we leave we hope the sophomores and juniors will carry on South's spirit and traditions. The never- to-be-forgotten memories of school - the friendly atmosphere of spacious halls, the eager anticipation for Scribe, the noisy din of the cafeteria, the friends and teachers in the next class, the entertaining as- semblies, and the cool breeze wafting over the soft green lawn, and last but not least, the reverence of commencement - all these will remain deep in our hearts. I can never really express the appreciation I have for having had the privilege of associating and working with Patsy Hale, my associate editor. Her cooperation and tolerance were unbelieveable. When things weren't going just right, Patsy was al- ways there with a smile and a helping hand, both early in the morning and late at night. Thanks and appreciation go to my hard-working staff who have contributed to the finished product, The 51-52 Southerner. A big help in getting this book out was our sponsor, Mr. Maack. His understanding super- vision and friendliness gave pleasure to everyone on the staff. Many hours of his time were spent working cn the 51-52 Southerner. My appreciation also goes to Mr. Harwood as well as the photography staff for their time and cooperation, to Mrs. Garnet Pearson, literary sponsor, to Miss Martha Schroeder, business sponsor, to Mrs. Alice Seehee, advertising sponsor, and to Mr. Walter Stevens, treasurer. Thanks to all fora job well done. I am happy I was able to work with Lorin and Max Wheelwright, and with Bud Parkin, commercial artist, and Greta Aa of the Wheel- wright Lithographing Co. Also my thanks go to Mr. Peter Ecker and the staff at Eckers Photography Co. Last, but not least, I appreciate the fine spirit and cooperation of the faculty, the student body, Miss Dyer and Mr. Backman. I hope that not only' from September to June but also in the future this South- erner will hold memories for you in print and in pictures. Ronald Lundeberg, Editor s: O '.-:.'
