Lynn Bennion SUPERINTENDENT Never was good education so important for leadership as now. Young people need the necessary skills to meet the increasing com- petition of economic conditions. They first need an intelligent understanding of conflict- ing social and political forces in the world and an appreciation of the contributions be- ing made by various peoples and cultures. Those who will lead tomorrow must have a sound body with emotional stability and high moral character and willingness to ex- tend sympathy and friendship to all. Mi.Kean HOUSE OF DELEGATES HOUSE OF DELEGATES The home room presidents make up the House of Delegates. They meet with members of the Board of Control to discuss problems of immediate concern to all the school. Then in home rooms the next day, decisions made are reported and discussed with students. BOARD OF CONTROL The Board of Control plans the calendar of events and makes out schedules so that there will be no conflicts and the school will operate smoothly. These out- standing young people at South, who will be leading citizens in a world of tomor- row, have the best interests of all the student body uppermost in their minds. They think of others, too, for it was South's response to backing and enthusiasm that made us go over the top on the combined drive for the Community Chest, etc. STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEES Y'l m These groups of South High students are the pace-setters of the student body. They represent seventeen committees which have successfully guided us through the social and special service activities of the year. Long shall there dwell within us the memories of the school dances so well planned by the Barnival, Girls' Dance, Fathers'-Daughters', Cadet Hop, Autumn Leaf Ball, and Bye Dance Committees. l Particular recognition is due those committees who performed special service duties: the Birthday Committee, who remembered every student's birthday with a carnaf tiong the Decorators' Committee, who planned all the ideas and atmosphere for the dancesg the Advertising Committee, who provided the publicity. More spice and sparkle were added to school life by the following committees: Soph- omore Fun Night, Pal Night, Mother-Daughter Tea, and Big and Little Sister Day. BOOKSTORE From selling miscellaneous items to stamping deposit cards, keeping track of locker keys, issuing books, is a tremendous undertaking, Competent helpers in the bookstore, however, make tlie work seem easy. 30 New members of the South High zoo DOG HOUSE DAY The fund-raising campaign for the com- hined drives resulted in a battle of the sexes. Dog House Day was set aside to give the winners an opportunity to rule over the losers. Needless to say, the fair sex of South High become 'Slaves for a Day. It was almost essential for a girl to he part horse to withstand the strain of all the hooks she was made to tote from a boy's locker to his classroom. The R.O.T.C. students had the chance to show girls it was no picnic to wear a hot uniform in class all day. After the boys got through playing lndians on the warpath with girls' lipsticks, war cries of Hand me the cold cream and tissuesl' were echoed and re- echoed through the halls. Pie, a delightful desert when taken into the mouth on a fork, was most messy to hathe one's feet in - eh what, Sharon ?? Despite the few discomforts suffered by the feminine ineinhers of our student lwody, everyone agreed that Dog House Dayu was a huge success. The grand total of 51,134 was raised and South High was able to wear a red feather proudly. The participants of the girls' dance, Rhapsody in Blue swish and ripple across the floor in time to the H. S. Fine Artists Orchestra. The theme, Rhapsody in Blue was carried out to the very utmost. Hundreds of musi- cal notes, colored blue and glittered, hung suspended from the ceiling. A magnificent silvery curtain pro- vided a striking background for the huge manuscript labeled Rhapsody in Blue. Everyone thoroughly en- joyed this social evening. 91 so The theme of the girls' dance was continued in the refresh- ment room known as The Blue Note. The quality and variety of the presenta- tions have made this year's assemblies especially outstanding. Only by careful, creative planning and adequate rehearsing can tops in entertainment be achieved. For this we are indebted to the constant efforts and the seemingly endless energies of the sponsor, Miss Myrth Harvey. In addition to this dynamic leader, we have had as student chairmen the talented personalities of George Garwood, Richard Shepherd, Joyce Carlson, Pat Bushman, Bernice Heyman, Betty Bor- quist, and Glenna Raymond. wh I 96 arilyn and ,Iimmy trip thc hght fantastic. ,,.'
