EXECUTIVE MR. EBERHARDT DR, NUTTALL MR. EATON MR. ARMSTRONG Pres. of Board of Ed. Superintendent Assistant Superintendent Assistant Superintendent Administrators To the class of 1936: Greetings cmd best wishes from the President of the Board of Education! As an ideal for you to work to I am offering the motto of my own class of '98, one of the early graduating classes of old Salt Lake High School-long before there was any South, East or West. Vincit qui se vincit, is a Latin motto meaning he conquers who conquers himself. Self-mastery, self-control, together with a thorough appreciation of one's possibilities as well as his limitations, are prime essentials to the greatest success and happiness in life. l Take this motto, if you will, and may it help you, each and every one, to attain your highest personal ideals and achieve your noblest ambitions. Sincerely, .ALEX E. EBERHARDT, President of Board of Education. 5 The artistic theme of this yearbook is inspired by life in the South. Well may the young people who prepare and read this book work with a hope and a faith comparable to that expressed by the people of the South in their efforts to build their culture during the years that have followed the reconstruction period. This spirit is expressed in the l903 report of the United States Com- missioner of Education under the heading The New Generation. The young men of the present generation in the South are facing toward the future: and this, without destroying veneration for the past, has given new inspiration and a larger courage for the present.
