This is a good record considering that most of the varsity players did not come to practice for the first two weeks. Mr. Aukerman said, “The team would do better if we had more spectators.” When South played John Adams, there were a lot of spectators that cheered for the team. This year is the first year that South’s volleyball team has a junior varsity team. This opens the door for inexperienced players to become aware of volleyball skills. In answer to the question, what kind of season is expected next year? Aukerman says, “Good, because we will have some good players coming back next year. Misty Kindt, Melissa McGee, Shantya Williams and Angela Voland will all be back. “Requirements for playing volleyball are passing grades, a desire to play, and treat volleyball as a fun game.” Coach Aukerman explained. Volleyball starts in the last two weeks of August, and practice is three hours a day. The April and May issue of the Beacon will announce sign-ups and try-outs for next years team. This year’s team consists of: seniors, Lisa Marshall (captain), Angela Henderson (co-captain) both three year members of the team. Also on the team, are seniors Cassandra Love, Shantya Williams, Agnes Madzula, Misty Kindt, Angela Voland, Andrea Zeruch, Michele Buhaley, Danita Morgan, Michelle Matejka and Rasheda Latham. The sophomores are Melisst McGee, Mia Golphin, Owens, Bridget Ewing, Nicole Faison. The freshmen Kim Gordon, Tenisha and Tamika Parker. South captures Senate title, 12-6 By DICK ZUNT STAFF WRITER The 44-year wait Is over for South High The Flyers scored on the first play of Ihe second half to defeat West Tech. 12-6, in the 55th Cleveland Senate championship football game last night at John Marshall field. The winning touchdown came on a 62-yard slant pattern pass play from quarterback Antonio Kennedy to split end Larry Robinson with 11:26 remaining in the third quarter. The victory was South’s first since 1933 in this series, which began in 1931 as The Plain Dealer Charity Game. South defeated Shaker Heights, 7-0. that year when the game was an invitational. South's record is 2-4 in title games, while West Tech is 0-5. Both teams finished with 6-5 season records. “That was a pretty pass, said Flyer coach Fred Oblak. “We had been setting up the slant in the first half. “Coach (Oblak) said to go with the short (slant) pass and then the bomb, said Robinson. “But the slant worked and we didn't have to go long. We knew what we had to do.” said the 6-5, 218-pound Kennedy, who scored the tying touchdown on a quarterback sneak from one-yard in the second quarter. “Larry (Robinson) told me to just put my head down and go straight ahead and that they couldn't stop me. West Tech, the North Senate champion, took a 6-0 lead on running back Richard Wilcox’s 57-yard touchdown run at 5:57 of the first quarter. Wilcox took the handoff from quarterback Hassan Abdullah and ran wide to his right before turning the comer and dashing to the end zone. West Tech’s lead held up until a bad snap on a punt situation gave South possession on the Tech 18-yard line. Punter Donnie High-ley attempted to run with the ball, but he was tackled by South cor-nerback Kevin Workman. Kennedy pushed across for the touchdown behind the charging line for the 6 6 tie. The teams turned over the ball 10 times in the game, seven times in the first half. Overall, South had three pass interceptions and three fumble recoveries. West Tech had three interceptions and one fumble recovery. South middle guard Eric Johnson, who, in his football uniform, played a trumpet with the Flyer band during the pre-game national anthem, and linebackers Vernon Henderson and Eric Elder were key members of the South defense South played a nice game. said West Tech coach. Bob Madison Their middle guard and left side linebackers did a job on shutting down our running attack. Coming into the game I really thought that this would be our year.' West Tech got the ball with 25 seconds remaining, but Robinson intercepted a long Warrior pass on his three-yard line as time ran out The key was containing their (Tech's) running game.' said Oblak. Most students agree that this year’s homecoming was a success. On a rating of 1 to 10 most people gave it a six. Pretty good. The dance was held in the cafeteria R.M. 109 from 6:30 till 11:30 p.m. on Friday, October 24th. The decorations were in pink and white, this year’s colors. The theme song was ‘Two occa- re fresh - ments were served by Mrs. Naylor and Mrs. Wilburn of the cosmetology department. Sunny McHenry says “This was an enjoyable event. Too bad I am a senior!” Sonia Abrahams, also a senior, felt “The homecoming was fun, but the D.J. messed it up and the photographers left too quick.” ‘The cafeteria could’ve had more decorations and they could’ve played a wider variety of mu- sic, but I had a good time, stated Dorothy Bettis. “What made it so special was also the fact that everybody was dressed so nice.” This year’s homecoming court were Queen Trade Washington and King Bill Rodgers. The prince and princess were Lenny Guzman and Konswella Wilker-son. The Duke and Duchess were David Walker and Tonessia Mack. Miss Freshman was Kimberly Gordon.
