Ohio 2 3 5 9 10 13 14 This year South celebrated its 75th anniversary by dedicating a new school. We of the '69 Yearbook Staff think it would be a good time to rededicate ourselves to the ideals of our Alma Mater. In 1944, South celebrated its Golden Anniversary with the return of many of its alumni. The school Alma Mater. Sons of South,” was composed by faculty member, Paul A. Barnes, and sung publicly for the first time at the commencement exercises. Sons of South received a United States copyright in March of 1957. As a result of the copyright, all performing rights became the property of the South Nigh Student Council. Paul A Barnes Sons of South Sons of South, proclaim with pride Bight and honor, yet deride Weakness, boasting, selfish greed. Strive for honest thought and deed. Daughters let your voices praise Golden truths and golden days. Courage, skills and arts applied Beauteous school, maternal guide. Sons and daughters, pledge ye bold. South's high scholarship uphold. Service give in South's fair name. Let character thy life proclaim. Sons, should war o'crcloud your way. Stand up straight, the call obey. Honor comes to those who know Duty and strike Freedom’s blow. Maids, should tears bedew your eyes. Brush away. While Glory Hies. Never let a broken heart Cause your valor to depart. Refrain— Paul A. Barnes 16 The new South incorporates the latest in modern school design, fully airconditioned and provides the most up-to-date and advanced facilities available for schools. Among some of the unique features; A greenhouse located on the roof, an underground track, closed circuit television, underground parking, a library with a raised section for studying, modern data processing equipment, faculty and student lounges, and a beautiful auditorium for the performing arts. Indeed, it is a school designed for the best of the present with an eye to the future in mind. 17 The New South Side t 18 Story A NEW ERA... 19 SITE w SOUTH HIGH IE CLEVELAND BOARD EDUCATION LORGE DOBRI - PRESIDENT HF-mo-tn w iJ n rnpwf.tv 1TURH T-UKTVS a™AU«-R JOSIPH%W1.WO V l ONG •wh wr !. 3RIGCS Mklt ARC i 20 — JT • ■ fFT SOUTH HIGH SCHOOI THE CLEVELAND BOARD OF EDUCATION GtO « DC««A MffcMMt wvi m t tots v i rmotit kjg« ca.im 0 «k 0 CO Cam iOlim M CAUAGMt lO « J CaiiaOM acsO.O I NKltMV AU W. Now, when you have completed this phase, is a good time to think about this. Like most of life, high school is composed of opportunities which you may take or leave. You decided to seize these opportunities and to pay the price of attention and work. Your reward is symbolized by a diploma: the result will be apparent in all your future. Great opportunities will always await you. And wherever you go you will discover that the qualities which led to success in high school will pay oil. A good life, filled with achievements, friendships, and satisfaction, can be yours. It is my wish for you, and my confident expectation, that you will not only achieve a good life, but that you will help others to do so too. oliv.-r J. Highlight of Coach Angelo Rodriguez’s baseball team was the spectacular performance of pitcher John Katona. Katona’s statistics were quite impressive as he knotched 12 victories against two losses. John was named All-Ohio, All-Scholastic and All-West Senate and was also chosen the outstanding pitcher in the East-West All Star Game. Along with Katona. the Rodmen were blessed in having All-Scholastics Rob Holub and Dante Scrrani at catch and shortstop respectively. I .ester Pcltz in ccntcrfield provided the necessary defensive strength in the outfield. Les was named to the All-West Senate Team, as was Holub. The Rodmen faced Benedictine for the city championship and were sidetracked 1—0. It was the first time that the Rodmen had lost in the title game. Although they lost the city championship, it had to be one of the most successful teams in South’s illustrious baseball history. Dual meets pitted the Flyers against perennial state crown holder Maple Heights, Senate champ Col-inwood and nemesis Marshall, not to mention numerous other formidable opponents. The going often got tough but the competitive spirit never subsided. The team profile showed that it was comprised of seasoned leaders whose experience stretched back to previous varsity seasons. In addition, there wore many others whose lack of experience was more than made up for by their natural ability. There existed few stars, but rather consistent strength at all weights and quality backup men who could compete successfully. The result was a team that could hold its own on any mat. It came as no surprise that the team won the first five dual meets before finally being stopped by Maple. The matmen went on to compile a 7—2—1 dual meet record and a 7—1 — 1 slate in Senate action, bested only by Marshall. In addition, a second place finish in the Senate Tournament was recorded. The remaining bulk of victories were, for the most part, won by still other competitors. There was Mike Olschewsky (138) who was 8—2 while capturing a third place in the Senate Tourney and a second in the State Sectionals. Phil Marunowski (133) was 8—5 in all and first in tin sectionals. Mike Falacienski (120) had a 13—I total, the Senate championship and a third in sectionals, and also Dan I.asko, (.127) 5—I — 1 in dual meets and third and fourth place in the Senate and sectionals respectively. Providing additional impetus was John Vad-ja (112). Len Picha (145). Ken Nowoczvnski (165)and Ken Stock (175). The 1968 football season was one of the best for South High School. South didn't win the championship, but it did have many outstanding victories that will be remembered for many years. The season started on a sunny September afternoon at Shaker Heights. The Red Raiders seem to have become a hex for the team as Shaker stole another victory from South in the last minutes. South was leading 12—0 until the last eight minutes, then lost the game 14—12. The next week the Flyers met Maple Heights for the first time in South's history. Playing much better football, they defeated the Mustangs 26—6. The team had two weeks to prepare for a strong St. Ignatius team. But when the big game was played. South’s early season mistakes were made. The defeat of 24—6. the lone loss of the season, cost South another West Senate championship... SEASON ’68 SOUTH OPP. 12 SHAKER HTS. 14 26 MAPLE HTS. 6 6 ST. IGNATIUS 24 28 WEST 0 28 RHODES 0 46 WEST TECH 20 26 JOHN MARSHALL 22 33 HOLY NAME 0 40 LINCOLN 8 The 1968 West Senate football race was like a good game of poker. For South it was like being dealt four aces only to be beaten by a straight flush held by St. Ignatius. . . . After Ignatius, Tom Morgan nailed down the quarterback slot and surprised everyone by passing for a season record of 1,200 yards. The following three weeks, the Flyers came back and proved their potential by overwhelming West's Cowboys, Rhodes Rams and West Tech’s Warriors with lopsided scores. The Flyers then played an undefeated John Marshall. At halftime the score was 20—14 in favor of South. In the second half John Marshall bounced back and scored, to take a 22—20 lead. With less than two minutes left in the game, Marshall was forced to punt from deep in their own territory. With a strong rush they got off a bad punt. South took over the ball on the Marshall 30 yard line. After gaining a first down, quarterback Tom Morgan threw on second down to Harold Jordan. A great catch was made and Jordan carried the ball to the Marshall two yard line. On third down with 40 seconds remaining in the game, the mighty Flyers forged ahead 26—22, taking a crucial game. The next week the team was to play Holy Name for the Pig Iron Trophy. Everyone had been looking forward to this game for the past 365 days. Last year. Holy Name broke South's 22 straight West Senate victory string. Gentile's boys worked hard all week, and on Saturday night the hard work paid off. Every boy gave 100 per cent plus, and Holy Name was bombed 33—0 by the Flyers. The Namcrs received one of its worst thrashings from a South team ... . . . The next encounter was a hot Lincoln team that had won four games in a row. This was a real challenge for South. The team was still riding on Cloud 9 because of the Holy Name win, and practices were not up to par. On Wednesday the offense, which was 95% seniors, scrimmaged the underclassmen. The underclassmen really did a job on the seniors to a point where all the seniors were sent to the showers. The seniors did have pride and had a meeting back at school. They did realize that this would be their last game for South High, and they could leave with six straight victories. The next night they came to practice and displayed an excellent attitude. They came out raising one finger in the air and yelling Senior Power ever)' time a senior did something right. The class of 69 scrimmaged the underclassmen again. This time the seniors did an outstanding job. The attitude and the senior power was the difference because on Saturday night the senior power beat Lincoln 40—8. There was no individual star on this team because they were all stars. There were great senior groups such as the Tri-Captains: Bob Szweda, Rich Samuels and Dale Tolar The team was as good as its seniors and its captains. They had a 7—2 record. : Portrait of a Coach Since becoming head football coach at South High in September, 1961, Coach John Gentile has built South football teams into powerhouses. In eight years lie has established a new winning tradition with a record of 44 wins. 29 losses and 3 ties. After losing his first eight games as head coach, he went on to win 22 West Senate games over a four year period, winning West Senate Championships in 1965 and 1966. South met strong Benedictine teams at the Stadium those two years for the P. D. City Championship Game. The coach agair. brought the teams close to the championship in 1967 and 1968, but was denied the title by one game each year. Spotlighting Coach Ccntile’s career at South has been his two championship teams and three years as runner-up in the West Senate. In 1964, '65, and '66, he was voted West Senate Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches. The 1969 graduating class, and the students of South thank Coach Gentile for the success he has brought to the South High Football teams, and wish him many more successful seasons. An emphasis on team effort was made this year and five Flyers won recognition as team leaders during the successful gridiron season. A record number of Flyers were chosen to the All-West Senate team. Dale Tolar. Rich Samuels. Glenn Hutcr, Rcinhold Kluczynski, and Ron Morgan received this honor. In addition. Dale Tolar was chosen to the Press All-Scholastic squad. These leaders helped to keep the South winning tradition and maintain school pride. TOP ROW: C.oach Sczurck. Mike Djordjevic, Dave Umerly. Ken Moauro. Eugene Mclcn. Garv Coleman. Tom Bondu. The expectations and tensions mounted as 17(H) students and 70 faculty members rapidly filled the handsome new gym that misty Friday morning in October. It was the pageantry of presenting the 1968 Homecoming Queen. One could not forget the sights and sounds of that moment: the triumphant college fight songs booming in great spirit from the band, the majorettes and cheerleaders performing their sharp routines, the noise, the impatient crowds, the Queen, her court, their escorts nervously waiting, the team to cheer, photographers and their flashing cameras . . . and then the romantic music of Moon River filled the room as the Queen. Joanne Sherbinsky. and her Court. Karen Langowski. Gerri Eubel, Sandy Drabek and Barbara Cisco were escorted to their throne by Senior football players. All attention was focused on them for this moment was theirs. The joy of the occasion was clearly reflected in the bright smiling faces of the girls as they proudly ascended the throne. Once there. Queen Joanne was officially crowned Homecoming Queen by football captain Richard Samuels. Then Coach Gentile spoke and it was pep rally mania. The regal ceremony soon ended and massive bleachers slowly emptied, accompanied only by the intermingled voices of those congratulating the Court and the emotion that took form in tears of joy. The emotion and excitement didn't end at the rally however. It was rekindled that night at West Tech Field where the South-Rhodes football game was played. Several thousand students and supporters braved that chilly night to cheer the Flyers to victory. Throughout the bleachers a pattern of orange and black hues could be seen. Colorful shakers adorned the stands as did ribbons and mum. Through the cold night one felt the electricity and tension in the air. The public address crackled out the starting lineups often being drowned out by the roars of approval from the Flyer crowd. The night progressed unveiling the unforgettable scenes . . . the loud cheering led by the orange clad cheerleaders. halftime performances, the band in full array, majorettes at their best, the Homecoming Queen, her pompous presentation to the crowd, the Alma Mater in its glory-pride on the field, and to cap it off. the pandemonium that broke loose with the final seconds licking away. A 28 0 Flyer victory sent everyone home happy and in the right frame of mind for the Homecoming Dance the following night. The dance brought a close to an exciting Homecoming Weekend on a somewhat quieter note than the night before. The cafeteria was colorfully decorated with helium filled balloons that floated about the ceiling. Everyone was dressed in their best as they danced to the beat of the Keystones. The Queen and her Court appeared making the evening complete. The music drew to a close near midnight and the school emptied slowly signifying the end of Homecoming. What remained were the tattered shreds of tissue flowers and streamers hanging limply from the cars as they slowly left the school carrying their exhausted passengers. Some were tired from a weekend of excitement. . . but for others there were the memories that would long go remembered. 132 Gerri Eubcl Karen Langowski 133 Vocal Music A CAPPELLA TOP ROW (Loft to Right) George Steward, Dave Umerley, Kim Kukoleck, Erie Peterson. Jim MacDowcll, Len Livingston, Marlocn Marcin, Julie Wagner. and Mr. Cole Antigone brought to light on the South High stage the timeless plea of the set rule of authority versus the rights of the individual. The bitter struggle between one’s own conscience and the law set the theme for Antigone. No happy compromise could be reached. Antigone attempts to bury her brother’s corpse against the order of Creon, her uncle the king. Through rebellion she has condemned herself and has been put to death by Creon. As in all great tragedies, her revolt bears fruit only after her death. Antigone refused to surrender herself to happiness and allow the desecration of her brothers body. She even went so far as to sacrifice love of life and Haemon to prove her point. Creon—a somewhat modern day dictator—places himself above everyone even to the point of making a mockery of religion. His life was power. The everstanding conflict still remains with no simple answer yet in sight. 69 Yearbook Staff Pal Cole Paulette Dudziak Nina Frederick Dennis Crcic Anthony Hoad Larry Jacox Linda Jones Ann Kish a Mary Kisha Jim Mac Dowell Marleen Marcin Phil Marunowski Sharon Mine Shicla Mine Mike Olskhewskv Blanche Pogowski Janet Voromy Cindy VValiszewski Judy Warner Don Wessel Janet Zuchowski EDITOR: Janet Zuchowski.
