Sine Qua Non South High Annual Published by the SENIOR CLASSES of June 1947 and January 1948 AMONG the traditions of graduation is the production of an annual. The pur-• pose it serves is to renew memories of people and events that were an im] or-tant part of school life. Because of this, we chose to call our annual Sine Qua Non which translated from the Latin means: an indispensable thing; a necessity”. We hope that that is the term in which you think of this annual. —The Editors w H 2 WAYNE G. SMITH Principal ONE of the chief aims of education at South is the development of character. Walt Whitman says, The greatest city is that which has the greatest man or woman, if it l c a few ragged huts, it is still the greatest city of the world. Following right along in thought with this great American poet, let us say that the best school has the finest student body. The quality of the student body is measured by its ability to produce good school citizens. A good school citizen is a good American citizen. Good character traits are the logical results of good citizenship training. Good character promotes honesty and dependability in industry, jn business, and in the professions. It builds successful armies and brave leaders. It insures strength and loyalty in the home and in the community. LET CHARACTER THY LIFE PROCLAIM! MISS ALICE HAGAN MR- JOHN LEE . . . . Gallagher 27 February 17, 1957 The Curly-Q Ranch Lone River, Arizona Dear George Adams, Haven't heard from you for a long time. Ten years ago back in South, we never dreamed you'd end up running a dude ranch out in Arizona. It seems like only yesterday that you were president of our senior class. Ah, and what a year that was! The teachers will never be able to forget our class, as much as they try! by the way, the other evening while we -were watching the Cleveland Rebels' Championship team, we met quite a fezv of the old gang. Do you know that Frank (McGill) Krakowski, Chuck Bokar, and Ed Galicki arc the mainstays of the Rebels7 They make a good looking team! Bob Atkinson, Kitty Hayden, and their little baseball team were there, rooting wildly. They have just been voted the nation's most ideal married couple. Marie Zaderecky just flew in from New York for the week-end. Did you see her in Shirley Tooker's new play Revenge”7 Bob Navis directed it, and it's the toast of the foxc i. Mitchell Kacsmarek came m with her. He's the voice on the program, Our Cosmic FutureHe looks well in television. You should have seen the commotion when Mae Falcone walked in. She’s the most popular representative Ohio ever had. The next time you come to Cleveland stop at the Statler. The lobby has been completely redecorated under the direction of Peggy Jacobs. Helen Pillar, and Dave Atkins. It is quite original. Jean Zappone had her own art exhibit in New York recently. Her water colors are said to be selling for tremendous prices, they're that good. Bernadine Novak also is in Netv York. She is a famous portrait painter note and is in very great demand. Don West was at the game, although I do believe it’s the first time he's been seen in public since he was axvarded the Nobel Prize for discovering a perfect cure for Atomic Sickness. He is now busy working on a cure for the common cold. Glenn Trhlin had to work hard to keep his kids in order. His South team won the 1957 city-xvide championship, and he brought them to this game as a treat. Some of the old gang started xcaving South High banners. After all, with three South boys on the team, we really have a right to. The Perkowski girls, Alice and Loretta, had to rush back to work after the game to make the last show at the Palace. They do a song and dance sister act. They're going on tour so be sure to catch it when they come to Lone River. Marty Bowler came into town for a few hours of fun and relaxation. She is noxL• Editor of the Netv York Times and it isn't an easy job. Alan Schweitzer, the “mad chemist’', is on the verge of discovering a nezu clement. At least that is what he says. Walter Miller couldn’t be here. He's heading an expeditionary force to the moon and points north. He is one of the youngest Major Generals in history. Dolores Wise told us about her latest venture, trying to boost spinach sales. She has her own advertising agency now, and she is personally supervising this campaign as it represents a tremendous challenge. Her partner. Marge Dover, just flexv to the West Coast to open a branch in California. Do you ever listen to Len Skuta on his radio program “Sing With Me ? It reminds us of all the Jamborees and Operettas he used to sing in. Have you seen Richard Kusmrr in the men of distinction ads? He made his millions designing cars you knoxv. and lie's already retired. Joe Koziol tells ns that Telesfort Skrzydleski is a jockey at Hialeah Race •28 Track in Miami, Florida. Barbara Robertson is dirt ii there, too, gathering material for her new book Racing With The Moon. Oh yes, speaking of books, Mary Jone Evans is the Press revincer note. She's given Barbara’s books some snappy write-ups. Lillian Ranch's floral shop sent a huge bouquet of roses in the shape of a basketball. Her unusual arrangements have netted her most of the city's business. Her cousin, Lois Fenner, was here with her latest beau, a young British ambassador. David Jones brought some of his outstanding players from the Y.M.C.A. He has taken Mr. Kist's place and is going to work in China soon. Also, there was Stanley Lasso who is at work at U. of S. C. in atomic research, and he runs a bookie joint on the side. Dan Langowski is on another one of his Lost Weekends”. (He is a millionaire by now, I suppose, what with his winning of the famous Bloody Tommy murder case.) Yes, he is quite a lawyer! Always wins his case. Bob McIntyre just received his advancement to the rank of Captain in the U. S. Navy. Bob Popoff came to the game equipped with his sample case of Popoff Brushes. He is founder of the Popoff Brushes, Inc. After renewing acquaintances at the game we dropped in at the Allerton Hotel. We were greeted by the hostess Dolores Swiderski and later, while lialfu'ay through a delicious meal prepared by the head chef. Monsieur Georges Radzy-minski, one of the highest paid culinary artists in America, we were interrupted by the feature attraction. Hartmann and Lewis, famed adagio dancers. They were accompanied by Schuller’s Syncopated Six and his famous Southern quartette, Ray Andryejnvski, Louis Picard. Ray Szcsepanski. and Ray Peltz. The lyrics of their unusual arrangements were written by Eileen Mahon. We were just about to leave the Allerton when in walked Anna Mae IVachs and Adele Scionka. talking about clothes, as usual. Adele is designing costumes for the Metropolitan Opera at a very good salary. She told us that Florence Kopiel has the leading feminine role in Romeo and Juliet. See it if you can. Anna Mae is having a toonderful time in Hollywood, costuming the stars. Quite a few Clevelanders are there now. George Bobinski does historical research for Metro-Goldzoyn-Moyer Studios. Do you remember Gretchen Foustf She’s in charge of makeup at Paramount Studios. She’s seeing a lot of Lon McAllister lately. Theresa Bashian has been cast as the queen in Hamlet, which IVarner Brothers is producing. This will be old stuff for Theresa, since she played the part in the dramatics class version. Rememberf Frank Vlchek runs a famous women's magazine called Your Face Is Your Fortune. He's making a good fortune for himself. Joan Petras is his trusted assistant in more nays than one. His latest cover girl is Jean McIntosh, the renowned woman ski jumper. Lawrence Zuppan's new project is a modern interpretation of the three fates. His sculpturing genius is said to approach that of the old masters. Lois Mahon owns a part interest in the Cleveland Stratosphere Company. Gerry Brodic is the Advertising Manager. Their latest stunt was a trip to the moon in rockets. We've certainly put a lot of nervs into this letter. George. II 'e hope you take time to remember us. Don't let your ranch duties stop you. Our class of June '47 has sure come a long nay since graduating. Sometimes ttv look back and wish we could start all over again, but in the end we realize that life just keeps going on and each year brings something new and different. So until we meet again. Beacon Staffs Miss Howarth Many hours were spent on the Beacon by these toiling newsmen and women after all pupils had left at the close of the school day. The mixed galleys and late copy were headaches but the fun derived from hunting for news wouldn’t be given up by anyone. Mask and Wig Players Mr. Barnes Providing dramatic entertainment. the Mask and Wig Players produced holiday plays as well as the much remembered Spring Plays which entertained huge audiences. Lawyer 52 Last Will and Testament OF THE Class of January ’48 S WE, the graduating class of January '48. take reluctant leave of our dear Alma Mater there arc a few things we would like to leave to the lower classmen and faculty who remain iK-hiud us. First of all. the entire class would like to give Mr. Jcnks, our advisor, a box of aspirin with the hope that he will soon get over the headaches that our class activities caused him. We would also like to present Mr. Lee and Miss Hagan with a plaque representing the many happy hours we have spent in their offices. Ahem! Pooling together our class dues we found we had an amount left over sufficient to purchase a wig for our own Mr. Kraft. We hope he doesn't object to the color. We always thought that red went nicely with those twinkling blue eyes of his. Rita Matt. La Verne Uniack, and Dolores Zepp would like to leave Mr. Ungers a key to the school’s washrooms as they feel it might come in handy some day. We finally coaxed Celia Fatibcno, Millie Force, and Nancy Mcinke to give to you future chemist their lab manuals (with answers, of course) as it may help you to pass the course. Wc know it helped us. Donald (Legs) Elliott is going away very sad. It seems he found there were two offices for which he didn’t run. Tough luck, Don. How could you have missed them! Eddie Zielinski (our own Bob Feller), remembering his swollen knuckles, is sending to Mr. Kraft ten cases of massage cream for use in future baseball seasons. Ernestine Single and Marian Meeker would like to contribute a swimming pool to l e placed in the catacombs. What a swell place to hide when cutting your classes. Annette Del Sonno and Donna Cadek would like to leave to Mr. W. O. Smith’s prospective students a copy of Bob Hope’s new joke book to read in class as College Algebra is such a simple subject to pass. Richard Antonucci would like to contribute a parking lot for student cars. It seems that one day as Richie sat in class holding the keys to his car in his hand he glanced out the window and saw it going around the block. Wc wonder how that happened, huh. Rich? A big umbrella so he won’t get wet when he leads the band at those rainy football games will be given to James Lee by Glenn Young, John Papesch, Frank Blahovec, Elmer Montoski, Donald Hansen, Harry Barnhart, and Norbert Simpson, a!! former mcml ers of hi' band. Because of previous experience. Norbert Perlowski. Joseph Bolser, Norbert Krushinski, and Jim Malik, those four great chemists, would like to present Mr. Sutter with a new chemistry laboratory completely furnished with fireproof furniture and unbreakable equipment. Tch. tch. wc wonder why. 53 A soundproof office to prevent his helpful (ahem!) remarks to his cast from being heard in the audience is the gift of Robert Bugcda and Joe Krasucki to Pop Barnes. And now that Norman Gorman is leaving, we wonder who will be pulling the curtain for all those rallies and assemblies. And that goes for Richie Koziol, too. Jimmie Durante had nothing on him. He always gets into the act. Margie Sotka, the favorite Joan Davis of South High, is purchasing three extra tall step ladders so that you lower classmen can finish cleaning the auditorium walls. We know how much Mr. Keehn will miss Arthur Henrikscn and Roy Hydash when they graduate so they are. sending him their pictures to put on his desk to cheer him up whenever he gets lonely. Mickey Rajecki and Eugene Koprowski offer a few last sound words of advice. “Smoke in the halls, cut your classes, carve your name on all the desks and never do your homework. Do all these things and you’ll be sitting pretty. V'eh, silting pretty, right in John Lee’s office. And last but not least we would all like to present Mr. W. G. Smith with a large hanky, as we realize how much he will cry when he discovers how degraded this school will be when wc leave. By Alary Ann Round IN THE LIMELIGHT l.
