Schipp Senior Farewell Address Ij1 DELATION may he defined as “socially directed growth as a program of j guidance for individuals who live in a changing society.” Clearly the program must include more than the three R’s to accomplish this great purpose. The individual should acquire knowledge and appreciation of the great cultural heritage which has come to him from the past. He must acquire socially constructive habits and attitudes. He should learn how to cooperate with others in group undertakings, lie should learn to read and observe critically and to make the judgments which his own life and welfare demand. It is through this process of study, association, and cooperation with others that he builds his own life and contributes to the ideals of American education. South High School has done much to install these high ideals in the minds of its pupils. To improve social position South High School has given English, science, mathematics, and history courses. To extend culture it has given languages, arts, and music. Extra-curricular activities were offered for those who were interested in developing social and more cultural traits. Cooperation, self-respect, observance, reliability, respect for others and many worth while qualities were developed by these courses. All these have contributed to the ideals of American education. The seniors can repay South High School and serve America by being self-respecting, and self-supporting men and women; and also by trying to overcome some of the social obstructions and some of the modern obstacles. The seniors of the “June 1939“ class extend their thanks and express their appreciation for the knowledge that they have obtained from South High School. lor January 1939 CLASS OF JANUARY ’39 MOTTO: There is no knowledge That is not power. — Emerson. It stimulates an interest in the better music of today and yesterday. Concerts are given every semester, in which all types of music are played. Operas, too, have proved to he a huge success. Thus the students of today are trained to enjoy that which adds to our social achievements. Thus we pupils have attained the goals which our parents had set forth. 56 ] MUSIC Orchestra Band Choir ORCHESTRA INLAYS, operas, assemblies, and any other school activity in-1. volve the orchestra. The members are always ready, willing, and able whenever they are called upon. Many of them have won national recognition for their musical accomplishments. Every member devotes the greater part of his time to this organization. Every year they enter the Music Appreciation Contest which requires a great deal of study. They have attained the highest honors a great many times at the Greater Cleveland Orchestra Contest. These people receive excellent training and coaching during these periods from their director, P Allen Barnes. The choir adds solemnity and dignity to programs that leave one impressed long after. Elkanork Lauren j Robert Andrews............................Joseph Moreland Alexander Mario ATHLETICS ATHLETICS in the high school is one of the most valuable and important extra-curricular activity. The value oi' sports in high schools is in their tendency to build strong bodies and sound minds. Every real American boy and girl has the desire to participate in some active sport or other. Those, who through no fault of their own, are not capable of directly playing, help the fortunate ones who can by supporting the games and in this way they also derive from them some of the valuable assets of the sport. One of the most important results of the athletics is the desirable, clean theory of sportsmanship and all the courtesies that go with it. The rough participation in sports where the temptation to foul their opponents is great, the athletes learn to control their temper and rigidly obey all the rules. This fine attitude tends to make the game one in which the player loves to take part and the spectator enjoys watching. It is this clear idea of sportsmanship, instilled in the minds of the players by their coaches, which prepares the boys and girls for their advent into the world of business. They learn in these games to take bad luck with good and never to shirk but keep trying always. Altogether athletics in high school prepare the student for later life and also to make the period of high school a more enjoyable period of time. 62 j BASKETBALL TEAM Coach—Mr. J.
