One of the cardinal principles cultivated by dub activities is character. At these various clubs students become intimately acquainted with each other. Many of the friends they have made through these clubs will l c lifelong friends. The students arc given an opportunity to shoulder responsibility and see if they can do it efficiently and quickly. By joining all these clubs a | erson feels fit to go out and face the world. R MvI.ING Along with the South High Whirlo Skating Club is a pleasure; it makes you feel as though it is time to Wake up and Live. The Whirlo Club lias sponsored several skating parties at different skating centers. The master of all the Whirlo skaters at South is Mr. Paul E. Keehn. USH. ‘ RS Club is always present at all school functions. You may see the girls with their black and white dresses directing the people to their seats or Whirlo Ushers taking tickets and assisting at the doors. This club contributes a great deal in helping the school retain its high standards. The club is under the leadership of Miss Hardon and Mr. Omdoba. [20] National Honor Society SCHOLARSHIP, Service, Character, and Leadership are the four cardinal principles of the National Honor Society. A student must be in or above the 11 A, and must maintain an average of 85 in his high school studies. The National Honor Society should be the crowning achievement of every student. Miss Laura Jones. Mr. Sidney SchifT, Mr. August Demhrock, and Miss Ottellc Kahn are in charge of the club. 1211 Scroll and Key Club group of happy brothers, under the guiding hands of Mr. Charles Sutter, is the Scroll and Key Club at South. The niemlxrs will long remember the warm initiation that greeted them into this honorary society. As the lx ys go out into the world they will long remember the outing and the Scroll and Key Jamboree that they sponsored this Inst year. This club is proud to sponsor the awarding of the goid and silver keys to the deserving seniors. 122| Philalethean Club To be in the Philalethean Honorary Society one must have special qualifications. Among them are scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The club this last year was studying contemjjorary writers. Through experience in entertaining the Philalethean girls cultivate social grace. Teas, parties, and informal social gatherings are all included in its calendar. 1 he leader of the club is Miss Gallagher. I23J Hi-Y and Friendship JP ERHAPS one of the best known organizations in the field of promoting social welfare is the Friendship Club. This club is under the supervision of Miss Limback and Miss Munn. Xo special qualifications are required, therefore this club has attained the highest membership. The organization is closely related to the Girl Reserves. Formal ceremonies are held at the Y.W.C.A. The senior chapter of the Hi-Y, tetter known as the Gamma's, is noted for its social functions, (thanks to Ma Rouhal). The club has a roster of six members. The president of the chapter is Xorman Kingerski. AH of the Hi-Y clubs are under the management of Pop R. S. Shriver. 124] Beacon W HEN Summer comes to a close, the trees lose their leaves. Just as the Beacon loses its senior staff at the close of a semester. The first leaf to flutter down from the topmost bough of the Beacon tree is that of super-council, the greatest attainment of a High School Journalist. This year that place was held by Geraldean Volmar. Four more leaves tumble down simultaneously from the height of Editorship. They arc Doris McAusland, Front page; Clara Kulakowski, Editorial page; Edward Roubal, Sj ort page; and Bernard Brooks, Back page. As we take note of the lower branches of the tree a single leaf falls slowly from the branches of columnist Anna Frasil. From the next branch, that of the Feature Writer, a lone leaf glides downward—it is Dorothy Richter. We now come to the last branch of the tree, the one representing the reporter. As we do so we sec leaves swept earthward. They are: Johanna Frenelle, Stella Olhava. Margaret Hutchinson, Tom Burke, and Stanley Bagenski. As these last leaves depart the Beacon tree is left bare, but when the new semester begins it will l car new leaves just as other trees bear leaves when spring comes. The teacher in charge is Miss Margaret Sullivan. [25] Honor Study Hall Staff A. SEPARATE organization in school government is the Honor Study Halls. It has a total of eleven study halls and al out six hundred and ninety students. These study halls arc governed by a staff and a cabinet. Miss Bernice Limbach supervises this organization. 126) Student Council A $ the Student Council is the legislative body of the school, its purpose is to aid the school to obtain a higher standard in its daily routine, and supervise student activities. The council sponsored dances, and the cheering section. It is also proud to say it backed the activities ticket one hundred per cent. Ml this work was done under the supervision of Mr. Lloyd Z. Walton. 127) Band and Orchestra T? HE Hand and Orchestra are very important organizations in the school. The band, with its colorful uniforms, built up a great deal of the school spirit at many of the footl)all games. The orchestra sponsored several concerts. Both of the organizations helped support the activities ticket one hundred per cent. The director of l oth is Mr. Howard Gould. 128] Mask and Wig “M ASK and Wig” makes South High a dramatic center. Without a dramatic club a school would lose a great activity. South High’s Mask and Wig Club is under the guidance oi Miss Kathryn Donald. 129] Athletics j . THLKTICS is one of the best known activities at South. Football. Basketball, Wrestling, anti Baseball are the different sports led by Mr. Shallcross. Mr. Ungers, and Mr McMahon. They handled our sports with success this last year, but we wish them bigger and better years in the future. Football FoOTBALL is the king of scholastic competition. South was a little'better this last year than they were the year before. They won three, lost three, and tied one game. The coach is Mr. Shallcross. and the assistant coach is Mr. Ungers. We wish you better luck in the future. Wrestling W RESTLIXCi at South is at a standstill. We hoi e Mr. McMahon has a good luck as Mr. Kraft had in pa t years. We hope for a better turnout from now on. (30) Home Economics Club F IT for a king is any food the Home Economics girls prepare. To Ik? a nicnil ,-of this illustrious club a girl must Ik- recommended. Not only do the girls hake dainty and tasty cookies, hut they can cook complete meals that are fit for any king. The girls also learn to serve a meal in the correct manner. Almost all the needs that are essentials to a party are furnished by the Home Economics Club. The teacher in charge of the girls is Miss Blodwen Fleurdelis. 131] Nicknames BOYS Baboryk, Albert— Utile Aaron Ragenski. Stanley—Stan Bienkowski.
