These organizations add a polish a finishing touch to the pupil’s high school career. The things that count are the things that last. By joining different activities a student makes some life-long friends. lie also meets his schoolmates in a different atmosphere, one of companionship and frivolity. By being elected to various offices, the pupil learns to shoulder responsibility. Some clubs are organized for the purpose of carrying on some project in which the members, really being interested, do some remarkable work. Every individual has some latent power which, if given the opportunity to show itself, possibly through these clubs, may develop into astounding proportions. The world is ever as we take it, but life, dear child, is what we make it —and so is school. Out of the whole high school course, the pupil remembers most vividly the time he has spent not in the sometimes tedious classroom, but the time spent on various activities. Philalcthean Society J TO be a member of the Philalcthean Girls' Honorary Society one must have special qualifications, among them scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Every second Tuesday is devoted to the meetings of the Philalcthean Society, during which time a special program of the study of Literature is discussed. Although the Phil is esteemed to be a reserved club, there is much done in the field of entertainment, which is provided by its members. Teas, parties, and informal social gatherings are all included on its calendar. Senior Phil girls are: Dorothy Ahrens, Ruth Berger, Mildred Jary, Florence Kujawskv, Isabel Povtak, Alice Doroin, Mildred Pokorny, Mary Udiok, Louise Del Priore, Josephine Makrucki, Josephine Klauda. Dorothy Fenner, Betty Wieczorek, Gladys Jacobs, Lillian Malafa, Wanda Pawlak, Jean Chmiclewski, Ethel Warshefski, Phyllis Bell, and Alice Krzys. 22 19 • SOUTHERNAIRE • 37 National Honor Society Firnt Row- Narcy Krawcxyk, Ruth Berger, Isabel Fovtak, Mary L’dick. Leadership, and Character—those are the four qualities that a student must possess before he is admitted into the National Honor Society. He also must he in or above the II A. besides maintaining an average of 85 in his high school studies. It should he the crowning achievement of every student to he able to belong to such a distinguished society. 23 19 • SOUTH E RNAIRE • 37 Mask and Wig Club Fieri Raw—Irene K rajewski. I mi Ik I Povtak, Ida C awrvs. Second liow—Margaret Skaleski, Robert Marquardt, Bcttv Wiecxorek. Joseph Lc Clmi. , Jean Skallk. NO school is complete without a dramatic club, and the Mask and Wig takes a how. The organization has attributed much to the enjoyment of the students. During the semester, assembly programs consisting of skits and plays were presented. Thanksgiving for Father.” presented the week of Thanksgiving, and The Greatest of These Is Charity. given during the Christmas season, were some of its distinctive works. Besides the developing of student personalities and instructing them in different characterizations, the members have studied and assisted in the art of make-up at several of the school projects. Senior actors are: Irene Krujewski. Jean Skalik. Ida Gawrys, Isabel Povtak. Joseph I.e Chaix, Bett Wieezorek, Margaret Skaleski. Kenneth Zielinski, and Robert Marquardt. 24 19 • SOUTHERNAIRK • 37 Student Council Fir.il Row— Ruth Berger, Evelyn Glowick, Betty Wirezorek, Isabel Povtnk, .lean Skalik, Margaret Skalcski. Roy Koberna, Kenneth Wnldeck, Oliver Rocbicioli, Joseph Le Chaix. PROBABLY the most active organization in South High is the Student Council. Members of this organization, who are elected each term, are required to conform to the highest standards of the school, and are elected chiefly on their own initiative. The general purpose of the Council is to help to obtain cooperation from the students and to comply with the rulings of the school. Senior Council members are: Ruth Berger. Isabel Povtak, Jean Skalik. Margaret Skaleski. Walter I.udwinski. Lucvlle Sokol. Oliver Rocbicioli. and Walter Jablonski. 23 19 • SOUTHERNAIRE • 37 Scroll and Key SENIOR boys who arc members of the Scroll and Key Boys' Honorary Society will long remember the lasting friendships made besides the rousing good times had as members of this society. Its initiation is well known to the school hut much better known to all of those who had to endure it. The Scroll and Key is also proud to sponsor the awarding of gold and silver keys to deserving seniors. Those seniors who have survived its initiations arc: Narcy Krawezyk, Walter I.udwinski, Tony Fernandez. Richard Protiva, and James Piwonka. Home Economics Club TIIF. saying that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach may he one of the reasons that some of the girls are members of this club. A recommendation is necessary before becoming a member of this club. Besides cooking and baking, they arc instructed in the art of serving. Most of the dinners, luncheons, teas, banquets and socials given in the school are prepared and served by the girls of this club. Senior Home makers are Elizabeth Rocchiccioli and Ruth Paces. Hi-Y TUESDAY night is Hi Y night at the Broadway Y.M.C.A. Gym, Swim, and later a meeting—that is the program enjoyed by Hi-Y boys. The Alpha Chapter of the South Hi-Y is the senior club although there are several seniors scattered in some of the numerous Y clubs. Alpha members will never forget the parties held by them in their inimitable style. Senior Y members are: Richard Protiva, James Vajgl, Tony Fernandez, Robert Marquardt, Lawrence Pleischl, Walter Ludwinski, Ken Waldeck, Elmer Jahoda, and James Piwonka. Friendship THIS club is perhaps the best known organization in the field of promoting social welfare for the girls of South High. Because there are no specific qualifications, the Club most likely has the highest membership. The organization, which is closely related to the Girl Reserve, holds its formal ceremony at the Y.W.C.A. Round table discussions and social gatherings feature some of the club's activities. Senior members are: Phyllis Bell, Lillian Kalina, and Betty Edwards. 26 19 • SOUTHERNAIRE • 37 A Salute to Sports ONK minute to play! A winning touchdown is made! The masses of people in the stands become a voice that shouts with the exultation of victory! Who has not experienced this feeling of delight—along with the feeling of pride that com:s when our band, arrayed in the black and orange, marches on the gridiron led by the strutting drum majors? Emotion very similar is also felt when, in the last quarter of a close basketball game, one of our players, always on the alert, intercepts a pass intended for our opponents and makes a basket that deeidcs the game. Baseball also offers its breath-taking moments when the bases arc loaded, the team has two outs, and the outcome depends upon the next batter. Because the rules of this game are easily understood, baseball is very popular. These athletic games help very much to strengthen the school spirit of the student body besides being the most entertaining function supplied by the pupils themselves. Girls Gvm Leaders Club GL. C. commonly known as the Gym Leaders Club is an organization to which • every girl with an average of 85% or above in her studies and recommended by at least three teachers is eligible for membership. Awards for services in the association's varied activities calendar are in the form of monograms which are awarded on the attainment of stamps which are given for various services. G. L. C. is supervised by Miss Helen Armstrong, physical education instructor for girls. The most vital project of the organization is to improve the dexterity of the girls in athletics. They are ulso taught the fundamentals of officiating in athletic contests between the girls and learn how to conduct a gviu class. The following seniors have rendered faithful service and their time in the gym: Mildred Pokorny, Louise Del Priore, Mildred Jary, Lottie Trunicc, and Jean Chmielewski. 27 19 • SOUTHERNAIRK • 37 Senior Sport Participants Firpi How—Rudy Merrick, Football; “Bud Le Chai.x, Track; llenrv Dombrowski, Wrestling; Robert Unstable, Basketbull; Clarence Masters. Football SOUTH HIGH’S 1985 and 1986 football teams proved unsuccessful ones due to some unknown reason. Winning but two games in the two years of play tlie teams ended up in the cellar position both seasons. Although South hasn’t had a superior team in the last two years, previous to this time we have had some outstanding squads. In 1933 South won the City Championship as well as the Senate Championship by defeating Shaker Heights in a blood curdling encounter at the Stadium which ended with the score South 7. Shaker 0. Also, in 1928 South won the Senate Championship by going through the season with a perfect slate. South’s elevens are generally considered plenty tough opposition for any of its opponents. Among the seniors on the squad are Norbcrt Mendrzvcki. who generated the team from his quarterback position. He was known for his smartness on the gridiron and his ball toting ability. Henry Sieknneic, halfback and fullback who did most of the running and punting, was one of the mainstays of the team. Rudy Merrick, although small of stature, held down the running guard berth and proved to be a thorn to the opposing teams by his outstanding ability to smash up trick plays. Other seniors graduating who will be missed when next season rolls uround are-Hugo Ankowski. John Meczka. Roy Kobcrna. Kd Racinowski. Richard Protiva. Fred Zhun, Robert Iluxtable, Chester Kryzan. Joseph I.c Chaix. and Clarence Masters. 28 19 • SOUTHERN AI RK • 37 Baseball SOUTH High School has had a softball team in the Senate I-cague for the past two seasons. Although the players receive no recognition for their conscientious efforts they came through with top honors in the two years of competition. The squad’s roster includes these outgoing seniors: John Meczka, who held down the first base position in great style; Ed Racinowski, who was noted for his sterling play at the hot corners, and Robert Huxtahlc, who pitched the team to a 7 to 3 one-hit victory over Glenvillc in the final game of the season. Track ALTHOUGH South has never produced a winning track team they have worked _ hard to produce one. Hank” Siekuniec, our one-man track team, ran the 220-yard dash, 100-yard dash, and 880-yard relay. He was a shot putter and a high jumper and certainly will be missed this spring when candidates are called out for track. Another senior is little blond Joseph Le Chaix, known as Bud.” who was one of the two star low hurdlers and the colorific anchor man on the lightweight relay, which did not lose a race in 1935. Wrestling WRESTLING seems to be the sport in which South always has a good team. South is known for its good wrestlers turned out by Coach Ray T. Kraft. Last year South's grapplers won the Greater Cleveland Wrestling Championship and placed four men on the city Championship team. Many city chumps have been turned out in South’s gym in the past and many medals were won. Among the senior grunters are: Hank” Dombrowski, wild man of the mat, and James Terwilliger, who have won their letters last season. Others, Henry Stobbe and James Piwonka, have been on the squad although failing to achieve enough points to merit a letter. Basketball WITH a disastrous football season hidden away in the past. South turns to its hardwood quintet with expectations of a great season. Coach John E. Shallcross, with plenty of veterans and a fair amount of reserve material, has a right to expect a winning team. In previous years, South has always been in the running and has won several Senate Championships. This season, the fivers started off with a bang by downing John Adams in the opening game, 36 to 25. On December II, South entertained Garfield Heights with a 30 to 15 trouncing. On December 17, West Tech was South’s adversary and led by captain Norb Mcndrzycki, right forward, the flyers came out victorious by the score of 32 to 23. Mcndrzycki is known for his aggressiveness and his ability to break up opponents’ pass work. Hank” Siekaniec, a tall rangy boy, is probably the most outstanding athlete. He has merited six letters and is now earning his seventh holding down the center position on the quintet. Besides Mcndrzycki and Siekaniec the following cagers have played on the hardwood for South: Ed Racinowski, John Meczka, Joseph Le Chaix, and Robert Huxtablc. 29 19 • SOUTHERNAIRE • 37 Senior Musicians Fir ( How—Lucy Hr Sokol, Ted Olry.uk, Violettc lloubn, Narcy K rnwc .yk. Orchestra BESIDES producing several concerts and playing in our school programs. our excellent orchestra still finds time to win awards in city-wide contests. Expert direction by our youthful director. Mr. Gould, combined with natural playing ability of our musicians, has made South High’s Orchestra one which we should remember. Band I'I' took a long time before South High finally achieved the goal of having Hand uniforms, but now with those flashy black and orange uniforms, we have a hand that we are proud to show olT before any school in the city. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find me, unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll. I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. —William Ernest Henley. Principal E. C. Twelve years arc spent in school to gain one of these virtues, Scholarship. Little of the other two, however, is gained in ordinary school attendance. The remedy for this is the various clubs and school organizations. Here students become intimately acquainted. Opportunities for responsible positions manifest themselves to the willing, giving valuable experience, priceless in later life. Thus associations through club activities supply the otherwise deficient principles, Leadership and Character. It is through clubs that a graduate emerges well rounded and fit for world activity. Home Economics Club DELICACIES that would make the mouth of any king water arc made by the nimble fingers of the Home Economics girls. To be a member of this illustrious club one must be recommended. Besides baking “tasty goodies and cooking hardy meals, the girls are instructed in the art of serving. Almost all the needs that are essential to a party arc furnished by the Home Economics Club. Senior homemakers are: Lucille Bass Eleanor Boody Clara Dukowski Marjorie McMeans Juanita Perchan Laura Pokorski Zora Predovich Irene Racin Margaret Puky Helen Matuska Bernice Bogacki Florence Tessman Adeline Kornatowski Whirlo Club THAT feeling that sometimes makes you want to fly is satisfied when one joins the Whirlo Club. You can quench this feeling on a pair of skates. Pupils wishing to join this club must be voted into it. The Whirlo Club has many outings at different skating centers, and it is a widely organized organization, with a Whirlo Club in almost every school. Chess Club ONE of South’s newly organized clubs is the Chess Club. It has opened a new field for activities in mental stimulation. This club has entered an inter-scholastic chess tournament. We may be proud of these senior chess players: Stanley Smigcl Paul Irion Fred Oberlin Mike Zadereckv 34 Math Club MATHEMATICS is the basis of everyday life. Consequently the various divisions of math as algebra and geometry assume a dominant place in the school curriculum. To support and increase interest in this important subject the Math Club has been formed. Besides this, the club has also several other functions such as social, etc. Senior members are: William Buda William Godenschwager Andrew Halco Arvine Laughlin Margaret Mischo Juanita Pcrchan Casimer Picrog Laura Pokorski Homer Wood Tom Fleming Richard Sadow.ski Richard Peshek Honor Study Halls AS a separate organization in school government is the Honor Study Halls. . Having a total of nine study halls and about seven hundred students, it is governed through a staff of officers and a cabinet. This semester, the. cabinet consisted of all seniors. Carl Moore was president; Vivian Zergott, vice president; Irene Burkons, secretary; and Arvine Laughlin, treasurer. Other students who acted as study hall officers or period Chairmen were: Dorothy Dobucki, Dorothy Mae Sass, Shirley Hooker, Eleanor Furstenau, Margaret Gulasky, Richard Sadowski, Mildred Jones, Jayne Monkosky, Josephine Gladys, Stanley Wojicchowski, Jeanette Ciganko, Clarence Moravcc, Walter Stankicwicz, Florence Schniegenberg, and Joseph Eizember. Boys’ Gym Leaders ONE of South's least publicized clubs is the Boys' Gym Leaders. A small, but select group it is, composed of tumblers, trapeze artists or the like. Graduating members are: John Palshook, and Arvine Laughlin. Girls’ Gym Leaders Club ANOTHER organization which is helpful to the school, as well as being a . source of entertainment for those belonging to it, is the Girls’ Gym Leaders Club. Those girls, who wish to further their athletic abilities, are allowed to help take charge of regular gym classes. These girls have the privilege of coming into the gym extra periods and participating in the activities that they enjoy most. Madalyn Janowitz Helen Udich Kdith King Alice Koprowski Amelia Pater Juanita Perchan Marie Plezia Zora Predovich Ruth Pyles 35 National Honor Society BEFORE being admitted into the National Honor Society the student has to possess the four Cardinal qualities: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. He must also be an eleventh or twelfth year pupil, who has maintained an average of 85 in his high school studies. The National Honor Society should be the crowning achievement of every student. The object of the Club is to promote interest in the study of literature. Through experience in entertaining, the Phil girls cultivate social graces. The main event on the Phil calendar is the senior banquet where reverence and beauty prevail. In this boys’ honorary society, friendships are formed which will linger in the memory of many boys. There will also survive reminiscences of the camping trips with their jovial advisor, Mr. Sutter. The topping feature of the Scroll and Key program is the giving of the gold and silver keys to those judged by a point system to be most worthy and deserving. 88 Hi-Y and Friendship Clubs IN every high school there are represented chapters of the V. M. C. A. and the Y. W. C. A. At South High they are better known as the Alpha” Hi-Y and the Friendship Club. Each contributes a part to the extra-curricular activities. Mr. Gould should receive high commendation for his able direction. The awards won by senior members provide ample proof of the part played in the success of the orchestra. Band STRUTTING in wind, rain, and snow is not enough to daunt the spirit of South High's orange and black clad band. To this organization we owe many a victory, for it is through their energetic spirit that a dull game was turned to a smashing victory. This semester there are three seniors acting as editors. The editorial, sports, and back puges are under Mildred Hodous, Howard Mulac, and Robert I.ongano, respectively. Other 12A's on the regular staff are: Andrew Halco, manager; Ernest Spychalski and Marjorie Spisak, circulation; Chester Dular, advertising; Virginia Petzel and Wanda Jarkewiecz, columnists; and Gladys Schmiel, Juanita Lewis, Paul Nakel. Helen Andrzycwski, Beverly Bock, Mildred Hodous, Gertrude Karkut, Alice Koprowski, Robert Mazuchowski. Dorothy Mac Sass, Valentine Parzychowski, and Martha Zizius as reporters and copy-desk workers. The Super Council staff includes Irene Burkons, Vivian Zergott, Robert Dictsch, Carl Moore, Felicia Peters, Robert Cowley. 41 Student Council THE most active organization in South High is the Student Council. Members of this club are elected on their own initiative. The purpose of this organization is to aid the school in obtaining the cooperation of the students in undertaking worthy enterprises and keeping the standard set by the school. To this club many an enjoyable assembly period may be attributed. Besides acting, the members have studied and applied the art of make-up on many unfortunates. The spring play, Oh Clarissa” will long remain dear to these senior actors who contributed much to its success. Almost two thousand fans saw the squad in action each game. Akron South, Holy Name, and Collinwood beat the Black and Orange eleven in the first three games. South came back and stumped Central, 13-6, in the next tilt, using a deadly aerial attack. The strong Adams eleven were held to a scoreless tie in the traditional South-end feud between the Rebels and the Flyers. Glenville and East Technical romped over South in the last two games. Wrestling THOUGH the wrestling team, under R. J. Kraft, teacher of biology, did not do well this year, a few boys stood out in performance. Joe Lucek was able to qualify for the city finals, and nine team members earned letters. Basketball BV winning eleven out of twelve games, South’s basketball quintet was able to clinch the co-chainpionship of the Senate, together with Lincoln and Holy Name. Edward Dluzynski and Stanley Kulwicki, regular members of the Southern squad, were given places on the Cleveland News and Cleveland Press teams, respectively.
